    The Lowndes Vikings swept their Winnersville baseball doubleheader, beating crosstown rival Valdosta 10-2 and 2-0 on Friday night at Bazemore Field.
    Lowndes now sits in first place in Region 1-6A with a 6-0 region record. The Vikings (9-4) have won eight of their last 10 games.

    Georgia State junior infielder Chad Prain, a native of Valdosta and a former Valdosta Wildcat standout, is putting together one of the best college baseball seasons in history.
    The 5-foot-8 Prain ranks second in the NCAA with a .500 batting average (43-of-86) through the Panthers’ first 22 games this season.

    After nine years on the job, Shan Garner has stepped down as the head coach of the girls basketball team at Lowndes High School.
    He finished his Lowndes coaching career with 186 wins and 56 losses — a winning percentage of .768. He led the Vikettes to four Region 1 championships, most recently in 2012.

    The basketball season at Valdosta State is officially over.
    The men’s basketball season came to an end in dramatic fashion Sunday evening when the Blazers lost a heartbreaker to Christian Brothers in the Gulf South Conference championship game.
    The women’s came to an end later in the night, when the Lady Blazers failed to receive a bid to the NCAA South Region tournament.

    In a coaching move that will change the high-profile coaching landscape throughout Region 1-AAAAAA, Camden County head coach Jeff Herron resigned from his long-tenured position after 13 seasons, and was announced as the head coach of Prince Avenue Christian in Bogart Wednesday morning.

    Eight local area teams will compete for high school basketball state championships in the coming weeks and more could be added to the field today.
    Between the Georgia High School Association’s Class AAAAAA and Class AA state brackets and the Georgia Independent School Association’s Class AA and Class A brackets, The Valdosta Daily Times has eight schools within its coverage area competing in the state playoffs.

    Seven Lowndes football players committed to play college football during a National Signing Day ceremony at Lowndes High School Wednesday afternoon.
    Of the seven, only one, safety and return specialist Tiquan Lang, signed with a Division I program. The other six players all signed with Division II programs, including three to Valdosta State.

    Last season, one of the Valdosta Wildcats’ biggest strengths was its offensive line.
    The offensive line opened holes for a rushing attack that accumulated over 2,000 yards on the ground. It protected a quarterback (Shelby Wilkes) who threw for 1,738 yards and 16 touchdowns. It played a big role for an offense that averaged 29 points per game.
