Valdosta Mayor John J. Fretti pled guilty to felony making a false statement today in Lowndes County Superior Court. The charge stems from allegations that Fretti knowingly misled city officials by failing to inform them that he had charged both the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and the City of Valdosta for travel expenses between June 3, 2009, and June 2, 2010. The charge carries a sentence of one to five years in prison and a fine of up to $1,000, said Judge Harry J. Altman. Southern District Attorney David Miller requested that the sentence include full restitution to the city in the amount of $4,194. Sentencing is schduled for Sept. 7.
