VALDOSTA — Somewhere as darkness settled over Valdosta Tuesday night, there should have been a mixed doubles tennis match to settle the afternoon’s hostilities.

But high school tennis doesn’t work that way. Therefore, each of the local schools walked away with a victory in Region 1-AAAAA play.

Lowndes High boys avenged a weekend loss, edging Valdosta High, 3-2, at Valdosta State. Valdosta High’s girls did the same to Lowndes High, winning 3-2 at McKey Park.

And Lowndes High may just have had the advantage in that mythical mixed doubles match. The Lowndes boys won their match by breaking a 2-2 tie with a win at No. 2 doubles.

Lowndes’ girls won both doubles matches to make it a closer than expected afternoon.

Lowndes’ boys (2-2) avenged a 4-1 loss to Valdosta (7-2) Saturday in a consolation final of the Wildcat Invitational on the same Valdosta State court.

The turnaround from Saturday came in two spots. Lowndes’ No. 1 singles player, Caleb Bradley, won Tuesday, 6-1, 6-0, as did Chris Shelton and Charlie Meador at No. 2 doubles, 7-5, 7-6.

“We’re excited to get this win today,” said Lowndes coach Heath Phelps. Valdosta’s win Saturday was its first over Lowndes in five years. “This is such a young team. We lost six seniors off last year’s team.”

Lowndes’ Daniel Griffin, at No. 2 singles, Valdosta’s Rex Dorsey, at No. 3 singles, and Valdosta’s No. 1 doubles team of Sam Hjort and Penn Swindle matched wins Saturday with another on Tuesday.

Valdosta High’s girls got their usual 1-2 punch from their top two singles players, with No. 1 Delilah Thomas winning, 6-1, 6-3, and No. 2 Kristen Tullos winning, 6-4, 6-2.

But it had to clinch the match at No. 3 singles, when Lauren Bahnsen won, 6-4, 6-2, after Lowndes’ No. 1 doubles team — Kristen Faucette and Mary Harper — won its match, 6-0, 6-3.

Lowndes’ No. 2 doubles team — Kait Smith and Ashley Davis — finished the day with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) win.

“We’ve worked really hard with our doubles,” said Lowndes coach Donna Quarles. “Two of them are new to tennis, but they’re very athletic.

“Hopefully our singles will come around after we have a few matches under our belts.”

Lowndes (1-3) opened the season last weekend in the Wildcat Invitational, while Valdosta (7-1) had four matches before the invitational.

“Maybe we should have had some rain,” said Valdosta coach Frank Hjort. “We got caught off guard. We weren’t as prepared, and I blamed that on myself.

“We’re going to make some changes. We’ve got Colquitt coming in next week, and if we want to contend we’ve got to be ready for them.”

Lowndes goes to the LaGrange tournament this weekend, while Valdosta hosts Colquitt County next Tuesday.
