Dora Mae Barhoover

CLARKSVILLE, Texas — Dora Mae Barhoover of Clarksville, Texas died Oct. 18, 2002, at East Texas Medical Center, Clarksville. She was born on July 3, 1922, in Warren, Ohio to Harry and Sarah Ferguson Odell. She was a retired secretary, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; was a member of The Mailbox Club and a member of Pineview Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Barhoover Sr., and son, Joseph Barhoover. She is survived by two sons, John Robert Barhoover Jr. of Cortland, Ohio, and Jeffery L. Barhoover of Westminster, Colo.; daughter, Terri Henneise of Clarksville; seven grandchildren; and four sisters, Katherine Hodge, Louella Jaskolka, Harriet Kassos and Frances Brown. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26 in Warren, Ohio. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery Warren. — Clarksville Funeral Home, Clarksville



Wade Hampton Bell Jr.

SKYLAKE COMMUNITY, SAUTEE — The Rev. Dr. Wade Hampton Bell Jr., 77, of Skylake Community, Sautee, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Community Hospice of Northeast Fla., following a short illness. Dr. Bell was born on May 18, 1925, in DeKalb County. He was the son of the late Wade Hampton Bell Sr. and Clarice Potts Bell. He was a graduate of Boy’s High School of Atlanta, Middleberry College in Middleberry, Vt., and Brown University in Providence, R.I. He received his Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministries degrees from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur. He was a Presbyterian minister and was a member of the Northeast Georgia Presbytery. Dr. Bell was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. Survivors include: his wife of 51 years, Dorothy O. Bell of Skylake Community, Sautee; daughter, Dr. Martie Bell of Thomasville, N.C. and her partner, Harry Warren. His son and daughter in love, Wade H. Bell III and Pam Stevens Bell of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Stan Bell of Loves Park, Ill. Sister in love; Jane Hynes and husband, Jody of Hot Springs, Ariz.; one aunt, Myrtle Bunge and husband, Luther of Palm Harbor, Fla.; uncle, A.D. Bell and wife Betty of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Kirsten Bell Campbell and husband, Rob, Jensen Bell, Katrin Bell, Stevn Bell, Dianna Bell and Gavin Bell. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today from Homer Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jim Stanford, the Rev. Dick Laurens and the Rev. Dr. Jim Huffaker officiating. Isaac Harmon Boyette Sr.

VALDOSTA — Isaac Harmon Boyette Sr., 95, of Valdosta, died at his home of Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002. Mr. Boyette was born to the late Jessie Thomas and Leonia Boyette on his grandfather’s farm near Lakeland in 1907, and moved with his family to the Boyette family farm on Cat Creek where he grew up. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and it was there he married his wife of 67 years, Sallie Touchton in 1935. After graduation from Valdosta High School, he finished Valdosta Business College and then worked as assistant manager for Jewel Tea Co. in 1939. He founded Boyette Motor Co. and in the 1940’s, was a developer of Dairy Queen of Georgia franchises. In 1951, he became one of the founders and was an original member of the board of directors of First State Bank. He remained a director until his retirement and served as director Emeritus until his death. He was an avid believer in community service and was a member of the Valdosta-Lowndes County planning commission from its beginning in 1961 until 1976. He served on the board of directors of the Valdosta Boys Club from its start on Savannah Avenue and helped acquire the land for the present location on Toombs Street.





All who knew him acknowledged his interest in Boy Scouts of America. He served as president of Alapaha Area Council and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. Mr. Boyette was a member of the Valdosta Rotary Club for more than 50 years and was a Paul Harris fellow. He was a Sunday School teacher and deacon at Lee Street Baptist Church for more than fifty years. He was a student of the Bible his entire life. Survivors include his wife, Sallie Touchton Boyette of Valdosta; three daughters and a son-in-law, Gloria Boyette of Valdosta, Myra L. Boyette of Atlanta, and Betty Jo Boyette Gittinger, and her husband Fred of Atlanta; a daughter-in-law, Wilda Britt Boyette of Highlands, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Lorenzo John Price Jr., Melani Price Beavers, Bridget Boyette, Britt Boyette Iannacone, Ike Boyette III, Renai Harvey Albaugh and Dr. Michael Harvey Jr. Also surviving are 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Amanda Love; and a brother, Alva Boyette, both of Valdosta Mr. Boyette was preceded in death by a son, Ike Boyette Jr., a daughter, Sallie Ann Boyette, brothers, J.T. Boyette Jr. and Charles D. Boyette, and a sister Alma Eason. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dr. Phil West and the Rev. Mae Weaver will officiate. Burial will follow in New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Anne Armstrong Haynes

COMER — Anne Armstrong Haynes, 54, of 250 Watson Mill Road, died Oct. 21, 2002. A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Herman L. and Edna Grant Armstrong, and was preceded in death by a brother, Richard L. Armstrong. She was a nurse, having practiced in the Athens area for more than 30 years. Survivors include her husband, Randy Haynes; stepson, Randolph Haynes Jr. of Madison, Fla.; sisters, Rachel Johnson of Danielsville and Rebecca Mayo of Lexington; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mary Elizabeth Johnson

VALDOSTA — Mary Elizabeth Johnson took death’s hand and journeyed into the promise land on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at the home of her devoted daughter and son-in-law. She was born to the late Pete D. and Lena Mae Williams in Valdosta on Sept. 14, 1939. She decided at an early age to accept Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and joined Saint Timothy AME Church where she sang in the Gospel and Senior Choir as a very faithful member. She was a graduate of Dasher High School. She was employed with Shaw Industries where she retired. She is survived by three devoted daughters, Gail (Ingemar) Gaines of Valdosta, Solina Johnson, Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory and Bonnie (Otis) Fagins of Andrews AFB, Md., and a devoted son, Carlton Johnson of Manassas, Va.; one devoted brother, Pete D. (Nona) Williams Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio; three grandchildren, Latoya Johnson, Damian and Justus Fagins; one aunt, Pearlie Mae Miller, Valdosta; three devoted nieces, Gwendolyn Dunn of State College, Pa., Debra Jenkins, Valdosta, and Brenda Tisdale, Valdosta; devoted cousin, Elizabeth Johnson; and a host of nieces and nephews and cousins and friends. One daughter, Pamela Johnson, and four brothers, Ralph, David, Jimmy and Alphonso Williams, preceded her in death. MADISON, Fla. — Ruth Naomi Rooney, 66, of Madison, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, aft

er a sudden illness at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Rooney of 43 years. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Beggs Funeral Home Madison Chapel, Madison, Fla. The Rev. Matthew Barker of Marybelle Baptist Church will be in charge of the service. Burial will follow in Marybelle Cemetery, Suwannee County, Fla. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening at the Beggs Funeral Home Madison Chapel. She was born in Holt, Fla., and had lived in Madison since 1963. A former resident of Panama City, Fla., she was an employee with the Bay County Police Department. She was a dedicated wife and mother and was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Madison, Fla. Winford Sanders

VALDOSTA– Mr. Winford Lewis “Bo” Sanders, 60, of Valdosta, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Born in Valdosta to the late Woodrow and Mildred Dennis Sanders, he was retired from Norfolk Southern after 29 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary H. Sanders of Valdosta; two daughters and one son-in-law, Pat Goforth of Ray City, and Peggy and Jesse Haddon of Brunswick; four sons and daughters-in-law, William and Brandy Boone of Valdosta, Jeff and Tracey Boone of Savannah, Sandy and Susan Bracewell of Alapaha, Terry and Natalie Boone of Albany; 21 grandchildren; one great- grandchild; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna and Andy Sims of Valdosta, and Faye and Mike Hand of Atlanta. Born in Fulton County, she was the daughter of Jonothan Vance and Agnes Williams Wallace. She was a homemaker and member of the Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Vance H. and Anne Dukes of Dixie; three grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister Sue Colwell.
