James Otis ‘Buck’ Harris
STOCKTON — James Otis “Buck” Harris, 80, of Stockton, passed away early Thursday morning, Feb. 7, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born in Liberty County and had lived in Lanier County for the past 18 years coming from Fernandina Beach, Fla. He was a U.S. Army veteran and Baptist by faith. Preceding him in death was his wife, Nellie Doris Bennett Harris. Survivors include his five sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Earl and Ann “Pud” Bennett of Valdosta, Raymond Cauley and Geraldine Bennett, Stockton, James “Lonnie” Harris, Ray City, Roy “Neil” Harris, Richard Kenneth and Brenda Harris, all of Fernandina Beach; two daughters and son-in-law, Bessie Doris and Dennis Beaman of Littleton, Colo., Nellie “Louise” Blanton, Stockton; 19 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Lakeland Chapel of Music Funeral Services. Burial will follow in Wayfare Cemetery. Mr. Harris will lie in state at his residence where the family will receive friends until Sunday morning at which time he will be carried to the chapel to lie in state from 11 a.m. until funeral time. — Music Funeral Services of Lakeland
Judi S. Hawkins
ALBANY — Judi S. Hawkins, 57, of Albany, died on Feb. 6, 2002, at her residence. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Nathan C. Godley and the Rev. Nancy Scarbrough will officiate. Judi was born in Sumter County, Fla., and moved to Hahira in 1953. She graduated from Hahira High School in 1962. She lived in Albany for the past 27 years and was a member of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church. She joined Russell Martin Realty Company in 1976 and was the first agent with RE/MAX of Albany when it opened in 1986 and remained with the company until her retirement in 2000. She was a member of the Albany Board of Realtors, the Georgia Association of Realtors, the National Association of Realtors and the RE/MAX of Georgia 100 Percent Club. For 13 years, she was a member of the Albany Board of Realtors Million-Dollar Club. Survivors include her husband, Fredrick M. Hawkins; a son, Jonathan Hart Hawkins of Albany; her mother, Nina Kate Spurlock of Albany; her sister, Norma Jean Hall of Valdosta; two brothers-in-law, Robert O. Hawkins Jr. of Stony Brook, N.Y., and George H. Hawkins of Eatonton; two nieces, two nephews and one great-nephew. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Directors, Albany. Georgia Lee Jackson
VALDOSTA — Georgia Lee Jackson, 89, of Valdosta, died on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at the South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on April 1, 1912, in Lanier County to the late William and Mary McCutchen Houston. At the age of four, she was adopted by Hansel and Viola Taswell. She was married to the late Claude Jackson. To this union two children were born. Three sisters, Janie Sirmons, Corine Brockenton, Flossie Edmondson, one son, Carlton L. Jackson Sr. and one grandson, Baby Boy Harris, all preceded her in death. She was a long-time member and mother of Good Hope Christian Church, until her health failed. She leaves to cherish her memories one loving and devoted daughter and son-in-law, Pauline and Alfonso Harris of Valdosta; one stepdaughter, Catherine Hodge of Valdosta; five grandchildren, Robert Gilder of Adel, Palma Gilder of Jacksonville, Fla, Carlton L. (Nadine) Jackson Jr. of Valdosta, Irma Jackson of N. VALDOSTA — Lila F. Longshore, 69, of Valdosta, passed away Friday evening, Feb. 1, 2002, as a result of an accident. She was born in Cottonwood Falls, Kan., and had lived in Valdosta for the past several years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Second Ward and the Navy Relief Society. Survivors include one daughter, Tracy Holowka, Fayetteville, N.C.; one son, Brian Forbes, Malpitas, Calif.; three sisters, Lela Rhodes, Gillette, Wyo., Violet Phillips, Eugene, Ore., Jewel Brown, Osage City, Kan.; two brothers, David Longshore, Wakarusa, Kan., Paul Longshore, Salsbury, Md.; and three grandchildren, Cynthia, Tabitha and Frank Jr. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jesus Christ Church of Latter-Day Saints. John Harvey Oehlert
JASPER, Fla. — John Harvey Oehlert, 38, of Jasper, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Shands at Lake Shore Hospital in Lake City, Fla. John was born in Valdosta and lived most of his life in Jasper. He graduated in 1981 from Hamilton County High School and was a former resident of Jacksonville and Tallahassee, Fla. He served as a public relations consultant for Trinity Community Hospital. Survivors include his parents, Harvey and Pat Oehlert of Jasper; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper. The family will receive friends between the hours of 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. VALDOSTA — Sarah S. Troutman, 101, died at her home in Valdosta on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, after a short illness. Born on Oct. 14, 1900, in Haskell, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Samuel M. and FeDucia Wyatt Singleton. Formerly of Macon, Mrs. Troutman had been employed as a seamstress at Warner Robins Air Force Base, was a member of Mikado Baptist Church in Macon and was a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Ruby and James Branam of Valdosta; a son, Thomas J. Troutman Jr. of Macon; eight grandchildren, Dr. James W. and Sally Branam of Macon, Darrell and Sandy Branam of Valdosta, Duane and Vickie Branam of Milledgeville, Sheila Branam, Sharon and Richard Faber of Valdosta, Thomas J. Troutman III of Macon, Elizabeth Troutman of Atlanta, Elaine Waite of Tampa, Fla.; seven great-grandchildren, Monica and Ted Peebles, Hiliary Branam of Macon, Joshua Branam of Athens, Stephanie Branam of Valdosta, Robert Waite of Tampa, Fla., Angie Faber and Rocky Faber of Valdosta; a great-great-granddaughter, Mica Sage Branam of Macon. Maybelle Tuggle Tuten
JASPER — Maybelle Tuggle Tuten, 88, of Jasper, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Trinity Community Hospital in Jasper. Maybelle was born in Pelham to the late Boney and Irene Tuggle. She and her husband owned and operated “Mallory’s” grocery store for many years in Jasper. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church
in Jasper. Mrs. Tuten was preceded in death by her husband, Mallory Horne Tuten, and daughter, Mallora Ann Tuten. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Irene and Hilward Morgan of White Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren, Kevin Mallory Morgan, Lynn Dee Eskew, Robbin Gail Wyche and Robert Kyle Wigelsworth; and eight great-grandchildren.
