Lillian Rowe Barr

LEESBURG — Lillian Rowe Barr, 81, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, in Leesbur. Born in Hahira, she had lived in Valdosta for many years. She was a retired weaver with Strickland Cotton Mill and a member of Bemiss Road Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jean R. Baskin of Valdosta, Jane and Lynn Nelson of Highland, Calif., Patsy and David Nunnally of Nesbitt, Miss.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bill and Linda Rowe of Douglas, Joe Rowe of Hinesville, Jimmy and Marie Barr of Leesburg; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nine sisters, Maggie Mae Greene, Augusta, Willie Voight, Marietta, Myrle Wicker, Americus, Alma Shirley, Jacksonville, Fla., Floyce Tillman, Valdosta, Katherine Sims, Valdosta, Martha Josheff, Madison, Wis., Peggy Canady, Oakland Tenn., June Rambo, Valdosta; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Barr was predeceased by two husbands, James L. Barr and Wilmer H. Rowe. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. The Rev. Tony Howeth will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. — Carson McLane Funeral Home



Harry Carpenter

HAHIRA — Harry Carpenter, 68, of Hahira, passed away Monday morning, March 25, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center after declining health. He was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., and had lived in Valdosta since 1968. He was Methodist by faith. He is survived by his wife, Mary Carpenter of Hahira; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Timothy F. Bruce, Deatsville, Ala., Robin and Louis Cerqua of Orlando, Fla.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Charles Allen and Amanda “Vann” Carpenter, Valdosta, Jeff Carpenter, Hahira; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Meryle Booker of Iowa City, Iowa, Dottie Williamson, Americus; one brother, Clayton Carpenter, Guyton; special niece, Delores Barrilleaux, Pasadena, Texas. Shelby Warwick Greene

VALDOSTA — Shelby Warwick Greene, 89, of Valdosta, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Presbyterian Home in Quitman. Mrs. Greene was born on Oct. 23, 1912, in Nashville, Tenn., the daughter of the late Alice Shannon and Charles Henry Warwick. She graduated from Ward Belmont Seminary and attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville. In 1934, she moved with her parents to West Palm Beach, Fla., where she lived until her marriage in 1937 to Clement Clay Greene Sr. She had resided in Valdosta since that date. She was a member of the Annie Mae Walker Sunday School Class, The Kappa Alpha Theta Woman’s Fraternity at Vanderbilt, former member of The Board of the American Red Cross, and was very active in the wars of service to military families local chapter. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Clement C. “Sonny” and Jean Greene of Valdosta; a daughter and son-in-law, Shannon Greene Sadler Hull and Robert Hull of Palm Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Clement Clay Greene III and wife Holly Greene, Ann Greene Self and husband, Paul Self, all of Valdosta, and Courtney Farrell Sadler of Coconut Grove, Fla.; and one great-grandchild, Jessica Brooke Mote. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clement C. Greene. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Charles Adams officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Community Soup Kitchen, P.O. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was formerly owner and operator of National Freight Sales in Macon and Warner Robins. Mr. Hilburn was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, serving as chairman of the local board. He was a member of Vineville United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board and was past chairman of Staff Parish Relations. Mr. Hilburn was a member and past president of the Mac Anthony Sunday School Class. Survivors include his wife, Betty Clements Hilburn of Macon; his children, Linda Hilburn (Billy) Bowden of Gray, Rusty Hilburn Jr. of Macon and John R. Hilburn of Gainesville; three grandchildren, Leon Russell Hilburn III, Taylor M. Hilburn, Brooks L. Beulah Barber Newlin

VALDOSTA — Beulah Barber Newlin, 78, of Valdosta, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Fountainview Alzheimers Center in Atlanta. She was born in Augusta on Jan. 23, 1924, to the late Sam and Beulah Agerton Barber and had lived in Valdosta for 46 years. Mrs. Newlin was a member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Joe Leadingham of Ridgefield, Wash.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ken and Jennifer Newlin of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sam Newlin, Larry and Debbie Newlin, all of Atlanta; grandchildren, Joseph, William and Laura Leadingham, Kennerly and Melissa Newlin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lucion Kennerly Newlin. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Francesca ‘Fran’ Pennington

VALDOSTA — Francesca “Fran” Pennington, 83, of Valdosta, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman after a lengthy illness. She was born on Jan. 21, 1919, in South Portsmouth, Ky., and had lived in Valdosta for 35 years. Mrs. Pennington was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Wymodausis Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Garden Club and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society and a former resident of Azalea Towers. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ramona and Denver Ratcliff of Jackson; one brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Gayle Meenach of Locust Grove; her grandchildren, Bonita Cleary of Gainesville, Jeffrey Ratcliff of Erlanger, Ky., Steve Hughes of Valdosta, Susan Spell of Lake Park, Ray Hughes and Doug Hughes, both of Valdosta; nine great-grandchildren; and three nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Pennington; a daughter, Gloria Hughes; and a grandson, William Lambert. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. VALDOSTA — Marion Cleveland Pritchard, 87, of Valdosta

, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Heritage House Nursing Home in Valdosta. He leaves to his cherished memories one daughter, Elizabeth Daniell of Atlanta; one son, Marion Pritchard of Valdosta; two granddaughters, Leigh Daniell of Atlanta, Shannon Pritchard of Longton, Kan.; one grandson, Michael Jones of Atlanta; two great-grandchildren, Marlee and Ryan Jones of Atlanta; one brother, James Pritchard of Valdosta; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Pritchard was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Eva Weeks Pritchard. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Shelly Marvin Register

ADEL — Shelly Marvin Register, 88, of Adel, died on March 25, 2002 at Berrien County Hospital, Nashville, after a long illness. He was born on May 6, 1913, in Clinch County to the late Leman Lafayette Williams and Susie Vivian Williford Register. He lived most of his life in Cook County. He was a retired farmer and member of Westside Baptist Church. Mr. Register was preceded in death by his wife, Essie Mae Shealey Register; one daughter, Patricia Register; one granddaughter, Teresa Horne Selph; one grandson, Donald A. Horne Jr.; three sisters, Mary Nell Joiner, Lona Belle Brown and Pauline Hayes. He is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Beth Horne Smith of Valdosta, Annette and Ernest Joiner, Sparks, Shirley and Kenneth Williams, Adel, Kathy and Johnny Williams, Valdosta, Cindy Geiger, Adel; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Walker Register of Adel; and two sisters, Pearlie Williams and Mayme Postell Jordan, both of Adel. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Westside Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hendley, the Rev. Earl Buckholts and the Rev. Phillip Simmons officiating. Henry Crawford (H.C.) Tucker

HAHIRA — Henry Crawford (H.C.) Tucker, 81, of Hahira, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at his home. He was born on Feb. 24, 1921, in Colquitt County to the late I.E. and Jeanie Flemings Tucker and had lived in Hahira for 16 years. Mr. Tucker was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Reserve having served in World War II and had worked in Security at Cape Kennedy Space Center. He was a retired self-employed grocery and hardware store proprietor and a member of the Hahira First Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Jean Hardy of Hahira and Peggy Campbell of Live Oak, Fla.; two sons, John Tucker of Quitman and Jim Tucker of Miami, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Pauline Riggs Tucker. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hahira First Baptist Church with his grandson, the Rev. Barry Campbell, and the Rev. David Gordon officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Cemetery. Dr. Bobby Blake, 44, resided 4221 Thornwood Way, passed this life on March 20, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the New Greater Union Ministries Church, 1050 E.
