Clyde Castleberry

ADEL — Mrs. Clyde Castleberry, 97, of Adel, died on Dec. 31, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Adel. She was born on Oct. 27, 1904, in Cook County to the late Marley M. and Verdie Purvis Castleberry. She lived in Cook County most of her life. Mrs. Castleberry was a retired teller at Adel Banking Co. and was a member of First Baptist Church of Adel. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Carroll Castleberry, Maxie Castleberry, James Castleberry, Murray Castleberry, Lamar Castleberry; and five sisters, Lelia Mae Martin, Alva Lee Wright, Ethel Mitchum, Nell Douty and Velma Prater. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Adel Chapel with Dr. Mike Ruffin and the Rev. Randy Moseley officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home. — Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home



Morris M. Cooper

BARNEY — Morris M. Cooper, 80, of Barney, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at his home. He was born on Jan. 4, 1922, in Brooks County to the late Rufus R. and Gussie Morrison Cooper and was a lifelong resident of Brooks County. Mr. Cooper was a veteran of the Eighth Air Force having served in World War II and was a member of the Barney United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Audrey Cooper of Barney; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Hank Mead of Lawrenceville; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Danita Cooper of Barney; four grandchildren, Gavin Mead, Drew Mead, Kyle Cooper and Rachel Cooper; a brother and sister-in-law, John Harold and Faustina Cooper of Barney; two nephews and their wives, Ken and Beth Cooper, Hal and Edna Cooper, all of Hahira; numerous cousins and other relatives; and a close family friend, Minnie Reynolds of Barney. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in Hall Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Houseal officiating. Linda Cumbess

NASHVILLE — Linda Cumbess, 60, of Nashville, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at her residence. She was born on March 9, 1941, in Berrien County to Robert Davis and Inez Bennett. She was a homemaker and ward clerk at Adel Convalescent Center. She is survived by four daughters, Barbara Palmer of Nashville, Teisha Rewis of Statenville, Leisha Gray, Meisha Cumbess, both of Nashville; one son, Steven Cumbess of Nashville and eight grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Zake Cumbess officiating. Burial will be in Bennett Family Cemetery. Johnny Truman Lee

HOMERVILLE — Police Chief Johnny Truman Lee, 55, passed away Tuesday night at the South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta, following a short illness. A lifelong resident of Clinch County, he had been in law enforcement for 26 years serving as chief of police for the city of Homerville the last 14 years. He was a member of the Shriners, Cassia Lodge No. 224, Police Chief Association, officer for the Drug Task Force, Peace Officers Association, past member of the Homerville Housing Authority and the Exchange Club. He attended the Congregational Methodist Church. He was the son of Odelle Young Lee of Homerville and the late Johnnie Lee. Survivors other than his mother are his wife, Jeanne Shipp Lee, Homerville; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Carla Untermoser, Homerville, Sandi and Claude Aldridge, Waycross, Cindy and Russell Zirkle, Trion, and Angela and Bradley Lee, Homerville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Timmy Lee, Waycross, and Greg and Melissa Lee, Douglas; one sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Duncan Carmichael, Manor; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Donald Lee, Fargo, and Allen L. and Martha Lee, Homerville; 13 grandchildren and several other relatives. Funeral services for Chief Lee will be held at 3 p





.m. Saturday at the New Vision Church of God in Homerville. Burial will be in the Pine Forest Cemetery with Masonic rites. Chief Lee will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today and Friday with visitation after 5 p.m. today. Evon Edward Rizer

BARNEY — Mr. Evon Edward Rizer, 77, of Barney, died Dec. 29, 2001, at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. He was born on Nov. 20, 1924, in Morven to the late Guy Leslie Rizer and Thelma Edwards Rizer Hendry. He lived in Miami for 21 years and lived in Brooks County the last 27 years. He was a contractor and farmer and WWII Navy veteran — CB’s 1078 and was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Janie Ruth Green Rizer of Barney; two sons and daughter-in-law, David F. Rizer, Adel, James E. and Wendy Anderson Rizer of Valdosta; two daughters and son-in-law, Yvonne R. Morris of West Palm Beach, Fla., Angela R. and Randy Marshall of Valdosta; one brother, Jerome Rizer of Onyx, Calif; grandchildren, Nichole and Shauna Morris of West Palm Beach, Fla., Tony and Dayna Hall of Quitman, Ashlee and Kellee Marshall of Valdosta. He was preceded in death by one brother, Rudolph Rizer and one sister, Iris R. Storey. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at the chapel of Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home, where the Rev. Jim Schappaugh officiated. Evelyn Z. Spillers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Evelyn Z. Spillers, 80, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on Feb. 2, 1921, in Valdosta to the late Robert Fender and Julia Carroll Zipperer. Mrs. Spillers was a homemaker, a member of the Oceanside Church of Christ in Atlantic Beach, Fla., and was predeceased by her husband, Jack R. Spillers on Nov. 23, 1980. She is survived by one son, William Spillers of Tampa, Fla.; one daughter, Julia Black of Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Kathrine Spillers, Elizabeth Spillers, Britton Black and Blake Black. Funeral services for Mrs. Spillers will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the graveside in Sunset Hill Cemetery with Larry Paulk officiating. — Carson McLane Funeral Home



Wanda Steedley

LAKELAND — Wanda Steedley, 56, of Lakeland, passed away Tuesday evening, Jan. 1, 2002, at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was born in Lowndes County and had lived in Lakeland for several years. She was a member of Knights Memorial Baptist Church. Her father, Issac Carter preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband, Franklin Steedley Sr. of Lakeland; five daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Jimmy Mizell, Joan and Wesley Humbers, all of Homerville, Deloris and Reagen Clayton of Carrollton, Teresa and Greg Mathis and Jennifer and Billy Johnston, all of Homerville; one son and daughter-in-law, Dwayne and Connie Warren of Lakeland; mother, Lois Carter of Lakeland; brother, Bobby Carter of Lakeland; four stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and J.L. Henderson of Fargo, Gail and Carl Smith III, Kimberley and Martin Smith, all of Homerville, and Brenda and Neil Richmond of Naples, Fla.; two stepsons and daughters-in-law Franky and Wanda Steedley Lakeland, Bobby and Amy Steedley of Homerville; 26 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Knights Memorial Baptist Church with burial following in Lovejoy Cemetery in Lanier County. Mel Thompson

WAYCROSS — Mr. Mel Thompson, 62, died Dec. 31, 2001, at his residence after an extended illness. He was a native of Brooks County but had lived most of his life in Waycross. He was the manager at Engineering and Equipment Company. He served in the National Guard for more than 30 years and during Desert Storm. He was the p

resident of the Shrine Club and past master of the Masonic Lodge No. 305. He was also a member of the Waycross Exchange Club and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. He served as a Civil War Reinactor with Company K 26 Georgia and the 4th Georgia Unit in Albany. He was the son of the late Wesley Thompson and Hilda Moore Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Kaye Thompson of Waycross; three sons and daughters-in-law, Keith Thompson of Waycross, Kenneth and Robin Thompson of Chesapeake, Va., and Kirk and Nancy Thompson of Waycross; daughter and son-in-law, Kristi and Kenny Rines of Virginia Beach, Va.; eight grandchildren, Candice, Cameron, Kyle, Kristen, Jeff, Kevin, and Cody Thompson, and Kaitlyn Rines; one great-grandchild, Keegan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Frances Thompson, Piedmont, Ala., Raymond and Dot Thompson of Quitman, and Wayne and Barbara Thompson of Dixie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jamestown Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Music Funeral Home, Waycross. Memorialization will be by cremation.
