Sgt. Pamela Jae Simmons Hammond
VALDOSTA — Sgt. Pamela Jae Simmons Hammond, 43, of Valdosta, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Louis Smith Hospital in Lakeland, after complications from an automobile accident in 1993. She was born on Sept. 10, 1957, in Maryville, Tenn., was a U.S. Army veteran having served 16 years. Sgt. Hammond was with the 202nd Medical Group, Jacksonville, Fla. She served in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. Sgt. Hammond was a member of the Cornerstone United Methodist Church and had a love for orphaned animals. She is survived by her parents, Martie and Harold Hammond of Valdosta; one sister and brother-in-law, Rona and Steve Degman of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Mike Hammond of Shiloh, Ill., and Chuck and Sophie Hammond of Valdosta; 15 nieces and nephews. Sgt. Hammond was preceded in death by one sister, Sherri Haans of Davis, Calif., who died Sept. 13, 2000, and her biological father, Thomas Simmons of Poca, W.Va. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Posey and the Rev. Richard Newton officiating. Burial will be held in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens with military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Valdosta Lowndes County Humane Society. Leonard James (Jim) Johnson
MONROE — Leonard James (Jim) Johnson, 34, of Monroe, died Monday, June 25, 2001, at Walton Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was born on Oct. 26, 1966, in Valdosta and had lived in Monroe for one year. Mr. Johnson served three years in the U.S. Army and was a paramedic with Newton General Hospital in Covington. He was a Baptist. Survivors include his fiance, Carli Odum of Monroe; mother, Mary Sutton Holcomb of Lake Park; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Anita Fountain of Jacksonville, Ala.; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Patricia and Jeff Beck of Lakeland, Debra and Mike Sims of Valdosta, Susan and Benny Green of Lake Park and Tammy Hansard of Leesburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard L. Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Green officiating. Walter Richard Smith
HOMERVILLE — Walter Richard Smith, 81, of Homerville, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. A native of Homerville, Mr. Smith was a retired truck driver from the Union Oil of California. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the depression years, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Liallian Alice Booth Smith of Jacksonville; two daughters, Frances S. Hill and Rachael S. Dehr, both of Jacksonville; two sons, Terry Smith of Jacksonville Beach and Pharis Smith of Albany; two sisters, Eva Register of Homerville, and Almeade Walker of Tifton; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives. Services for Mr. Smith will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Shiloh Southern Congregational Methodist Church. Burial will be held in the Shiloh Cemetery. Mr. Smith’s family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. H. Eugene “Geno” Stalvey
LAKE PARK — H. Eugene “Geno” Stalvey, 80, of Lake Park, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at his home. He was born on Feb. 7, 1921, in Valdosta to the late Ben and Beulah McDaniel Stalvey. Mr. Stalvey was the operations manager for Sinclair Refining Co. for the United States excluding California and was the real estate manager for Atlantic Richfield Co. until his retirement on
March 1, 1976, covering six states headquartering in Chicago, Ill. He was married to the late Kathryn Harper Stalvey on Dec. 14, 1941, until her death on Dec. 19, 1997. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to Lake Park where they joined the Lake Park United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the board and helped with the renovations of the Mac Pierce Hall. He was an enthusiastic golfer for many years organizing the Francis Lake Seniors and South Georgia/North Florida Mans Golf Association. Mr. Stalvey served as a captain in the U.S. Army having served in World War II in the China India Burma Theatre. He spent several years as an engineer on the Burma Road. Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, William Ben and Elizabeth Stalvey of Roswell and his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah Frances and Joe Wyant of Savannah. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Lake Park United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Soper and the Rev. Michael P. Lyons officiating. Charles Burgman, 52, of Valdosta, passed this life on June 27, 2001, at the South Georgia Medical Center.
