James W. Ragan
VALDOSTA — James W. Ragan, 79, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born on July 19, 1922, in Randolph County, Mr. Ragan was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Camilla. Mr. Ragan was the son of the late Thomas Burney and Eva Mae Mayfield Ragan. Survivors include his wife, Mary S. Ragan of Valdosta; a daughter, Carol Jean Youngblood of Albany; two sons, Arnold Carden of Camilla and Ferrell Carden of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Camilla with burial in Oakview Cemetery. The Rev. Phillip Streetman will officiate. June C. Redish
VALDOSTA — June C. Redish, 78, of Valdosta, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 15, 1923, in Brooks County to the late Lee and Minnie Simmons Redish. Mr. Redish was retired after working for over 40 years with the Lowndes County Health Department and the Lowndes County Board of Education, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was a member of Greenwood Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Redish of Valdosta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda and David Folsom of Riverview, Fla., and Catherine and Jerry Strickland of Baxley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Tress Redish and Clif and Dottie Redish of Valdosta; nine grandchildren, David Folsom Jr., Sandy and Craig Cloversettle, Poppy Strickland, Becky Strickland, Erin and Kevin Wacter, Emily Redish, Travis Redish, Kaitlyn Redish and Bailey Redish; two great-grandchildren, Shaw Wacter and Steven Folsom; one sister, Neta Davis of Pittsboro, N.C. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Benny Woods and Dr. Clyde Stokes officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Memorial Gardens. David C. Steinberg Sr.
VALDOSTA — David C. Steinberg Sr., 81, of Valdosta, died at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002. He was born on April 30, 1920, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Steinberg of Lowndes County. During WWII, Mr. Steinberg served with the U.S. Army Medical Corp in England. A retail grocer for 40 years, he was a past member and past president of the Valdosta Rotary Club and a former member of Lee Street Baptist Church, where he was a lay preacher, Sunday School superintendent and chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was currently a member of Northside Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife, Bertha Southall Steinberg of Valdosta; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Charles Mizell of Barney; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Teresa Steinberg, David and Marcia Steinberg, and Charles and Debbi Steinberg, all of Valdosta; grandchildren, Lisa and Richard Chafin of Barney, Bart and Stephanie Mizell, Jamy and Karen Steinberg, Billy and Rhonda Steinberg, Stacy and Chris Kendrick, David Steinberg III, Brooke Steinberg, Christy Steinberg, all of Valdosta, Chad and Jennie Steinberg of Tifton; five great-grandchildren, Lexxi Pittman, Maggie and Molly Mizell, Kayleigh Steinberg, Will Steinberg; sister, Margaret Shannon of Orange Park, Fla.; uncle, Edward L. Griffin of Muscle Shoals, Ala.; sister-in-law, Maxine Steinberg of Valdosta; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leroy and Sheila Southall of Hahira, Nora and Carl Watkins of Valdosta; brother-in-law, Bert Newcomb of Sanford, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Steinberg was also preceded in death by his brother, the Rev. Robert F. Steinberg. Sallie Belflower Wayne
VALDOSTA — Sallie Belflower Wayne, 89, of Valdosta, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at the Villa Convalescent Center in Lakeland. Mrs. Wayne was born in Omega to the late George Luther and Lenora Baker Belflower and had lived in Valdosta since 1954. She was a retired bookkeeper with Smith Motors in Valdosta, a member of Crossroads Baptist Church, and a life member of the Eastern Star and WOW. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Wesley Johnson of Lakeland; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Anna Wayne of Palatka, Fla.; seven grandchildren, James David Sears Jr. of Norfolk, Va., Lisa Sears Saul and husband James of Tifton, David Johnson, Lakeland, Kimberly Pate of Warner Robins, Ron Wayne Jr. and wife Kim of Morven, Bryan Wayne and Laycee Wayne, both of Palatka; four great-grandchildren, Wesley Saul and Carley Saul, both of Tifton, Elyssa Pate and Kaleb Foshee, both of Warner Robins; a sister, Willa Mae Davis of Jonesboro; and a special niece, Mattye Howe of Marianna, Ark. Mrs. Wayne was predeceased by her husband, Edward J. Wayne. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton with Eastern Star rites at the gravesite. The family will receive their friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. today. Mamie Lee Redding Wells
HAHIRA — Mamie Lee Redding Wells, 83, of Hahira, died on Monday evening, Feb. 4, 2002, at Orange Park Medical Center in Orange Park, Fla. She was born on Nov. 7, 1918, in Hahira to the late William Elhannon and Mayme Edna Turner Redding and was a former member of the Hahira Church of Christ and currently was a member of the Black Creek Church of Christ in Green Cove Springs, Fla. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Willie Wetherington of Thornton, Colo., and Glenda and Billy Smith of Green Cove Springs; four grandchildren, Tonya Tyson, Terri Freeman, Lori Bogan and Brandon Smith; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Nell Parrish of Hahira; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph H. Wells; two sisters, Mae Parrish and Lillian Crowley, and one brother, Hannon Redding.
