Frances Garbutt Carroll
VALDOSTA — Frances Garbutt Carroll, 88, of Valdosta, died on Monday, March 3, 2003, after an extended illness. Born on Oct. 27, 1914, she was the daughter of the late A.G. and Lida Kittrell Garbutt of Statenville. Mrs. Carroll was homemaker and a very active member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors are her husband, Jamie D. Carroll of Valdosta; daughters and son-in-law, Lida C. (Sugie) Catikos of Valdosta, Lynn Ann and George M. Edwards of Ocala, Fla.; sons and daughters-in-law, James D. (Jimmy) and Ingrid Carroll of Lake Park, W.W. (Bo) and Shirlee Carroll of Valdosta; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Valerie Ruth Garbutt Curtright of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Sara Anne Garbutt Duncan of Riviera Beach, Fla., Elizabeth Garbutt Shaw of Tallahassee, Fla., Mary Catherine Garbutt Blanton of Valdosta. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Allie Glenn Garbutt Jr., Harry Gilmore Garbutt, Elmo Kittrell Garbutt, Arthur Harrison Garbutt, Frank Randall Garbutt, John William Garbutt II.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Christ Episcopal Church. The Rev. Peter L. Ingeman, the Rev. Lee Bauer, Deacon Stella Clark and Dea. Karyl Miller will officiate. The Carroll family will receive friends on Wednesday following the service at the Christ Episcopal Church fellowship hall. Addison Olivia Gross
VALDOSTA– Addison Olivia Gross, infant daughter of Barry and Amber Kirkland Gross of Valdosta, died Sunday, March 2, 2003. She is survived by her parents; a brother, Dalton Lee Gross; and a sister, Reagan Faith Gross. Addison Olivia is also survived by her maternal grandfather, Charles “Pawpaw” Kirkland of Wicksburg, Ala.; paternal grandparents, Edwin “Poppa” Gross and Betty “Bebbie” Gross of Deatsville, Ala.; several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Judy “Mimi” Kirkland of Wicksburg, Ala; her aunt, Tina Gross Portis and first cousin, Chandler Elizabeth Kirkland, both of Montgomery, Ala.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Central Avenue Church of Christ in Valdosta. Parents will take visitors following the service at the church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Christian Home Church of Christ in Wicksburg, Ala., with graveside services following. David R. ‘Grumpy’ Shetler
WINCHESTER, Va. — David R. “Grumpy” Shetler, 68, of Winchester, Va., died on Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Winchester Medical Center.
He was born on May 19, 1934, in Berwick, Pa., to Lula Gilbert Shetler and the late Charles W. Shetler.
On April 3, 1954, he married Mary L. Montano in Salina, Kan. He retired in 1989 from the U.S. government. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Kernstown United Methodist Church, past president and lieutenant governor of Kiwanis Club, Kiwanis Key Club sponsor, past president of Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, past member of Winchester City Council, served on Economic Development Commission, and was founder of Winchester Neighborhood Watch.
He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Shetler of Winchester, Va.; mother, Lula G. Shetler of Berwick, Pa.; three daughters Debi Willis of Richmond, Va., Cindi Catlett of Valdosta and Linda “Dink” Shetler of Winchester, Va.; one son, Chuck Shetler of Winchester, Va.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Marilee Socia of Arlington, Va.; two brothers, Richard Shetler of Berwick, Pa. and Darl Shetler of Inwood, W. Va.
Funeral service will be held at 11 am. today at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Winchester, Va., with the Rev. Dawn Marie Singleton and Ray Stelzl officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park in Frederick County, Va. Pall

William A. ‘Bill’ Smith Sr.
SPARKS — William A. “Bill” Smith Sr., 77, of Sparks, died on March 3, 2003, at Tift Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
He was born on March 25, 1925, in Atkinson County to the late Judge Edwin R. Smith, Sr. and the late Gertrude Hinson Smith. He lived most of his life in Berrien and Cook Counties. He was a lay evangelist from 1975 to the present, Navy WWII, South Pacific veteran and member of Sparks United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin R. Smith Jr. and Wilson Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Shierling Smith of Sparks; two sons and daughters-in-law, William A. “Snuffy” and Connie Smith of Sparks and Ralph W. and Debbie Smith of Valdosta; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth S. and Gene McDaniel of Tifton; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Hancock, Marietta, Alice Mullins, Macon, Virgie S. McDermott.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sparks United Methodist Church with the Rev. Al Lewis and the Rev. Donnie Swanson officiating. Burial will be in Sparks City Cemetery.
