Virginia Amenia Newsome Barthel

ASHEVILLE — Virginia Amenia Newsome Barthel, the only child of the late Joseph Randolph and Winona Margaret Aylesworth Newsome, of Sandersville, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, in a local nursing facility. She graduated from Sandersville High School and received an AB degree, majoring in languages, from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. Later she took courses at Valdosta State College, Valdosta, Stetson University, Deland, Fla., and University of North Carolina Asheville, Asheville, N.C. Mrs. Barthel taught Latin, English and French in several high schools in Georgia and elementary school in Valdosta for a teaching career that spanned 28 years. In 1958, she married Dr. John Erich Barthel, a native of Dresden, Germany, and chairman of the Economics Department of Stetson University and UNCA from 1967 until his retirement in 1976. Dr. Barthel died in 1990. Mrs. Barthel was an avid gardener. She was a charter member of the Hahira Garden Club, president of the Valdosta Garden Club, the Deland, Fla., Garden Club and the Asheville, N.C., Garden Club, where she was a lifetime member. She was also a charter member of the Asheville Chapter of Ikebana International, for Japanese-style flower arranging, and three-time president of the chapter. Mrs. Barthel was a member of the Asheville Symphony Guild and First Baptist Church of Asheville. She is survived by her son, Michail Esterman of Monrovia, Ind.; three grandchildren, Marty Esterman of Atlanta, Michele Carter of Bryson City, N.C., and Matt Esterman of Cincinnati, Ohio; cousin, Louise Newsome McDaniel of Sandersville, and a great-grandson, Jack Carter of Bryson City, N.C. The family will received friends Friday evening at Morris Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Morris Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Guy Sales officiating. Burial will follow at Ashlawn Gardens of Memory. Citha Gentry Browning

LAKELAND — Citha Gentry Browning, 88, of Lakeland passed away Wednesday afternoon July 3, 2002, in Lakeland Villa Convalescent Center. She was born Jan. 1, 1914, in Cookville, Tenn., and had lived in Lakeland most of her life. She attended Lakeland Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Browning. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Elijah Benefield of Lakeland; a daughter, Marie Coble of Woodruff, S.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Cathy Browning of Lakeland; a brother C.D. Gentry of Denver, Colo.; nine grnadchildren, Dennis and Tim Benefield, Ann Unwin, Tony Leo Jackson, Lamar Jackson, Kendall and James Cochran, Niki Hartman and Benji Browning, 11 great grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday July 8, 2002 in Lakeland Church of God, with burial to follow in Fender Cemetery. H.G. Dumas

Mr. H.G. Dumas, 87, 2910 Tara Drive, Valdosta, formerly of Adel, died July 5, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center. Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Woodlawn City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on North Hutchinson Avenue from 6-8 p.m. today. Born Aug. 28, 1914, in Worth County, he lived most of his life in Cook County and attended Adel Assembly of God. He was a retired newspaper carrier and school crossing guard. His parents, Samuel Thomas Dumas and Missouri Ann Walters Dumas, preceded him in death. Survivors are his wife, Audrey Simmons Dumas, Valdosta; a son, Richard Dumas, Valdosta; a daughter, Hilda Bennett, Valdosta; four grandchil

Clinton Zerol Green

Services for Clinton Zerol Green, 59, Boston are at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 6, 2002 at Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug R. Douglas Harvey officiating. Interment follows at Boston City Cemetery. Mr. Green died Thursday, July 4 at his residence. Born July 12, 1942 in Sylvester, he was the son of the late Winnon Green and Annie Mae Gunn Green, who survives. He married Betty Jean McClure Green, who survives, in 1962 in Sparks. He had resided in Boston for 16 years, had retired from Flowers Bakery as a shipping superintendent and was a member of Pinson Eastside Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. Survivors include his mother, Annie Mae Gunn Green; his wife, Betty Jean McClure Green of Boston; a daughter, Christina Leigh “Christy” Folsom of Valdosta; three sisters; a brother; and best friend, Gerald Wilson of Boston. Billy Wade Hill

JASPER, Fla. — Billy Wade Hill, age 79, of Jasper, Fla., passed away Friday, July 5, at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla. The Hamilton County native and lifelong resident was a retired farmer. Billy was a graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in agricultural science. He served for 20 years as the president of the Flue-cured Stabilzation Corp. and past vice president of the Florida Farm Bureau. Mr. Hill also served on the original board of trustees at Hamilton County Memorial Hospital, was a member and deacon at Jasper First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years and was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. He was preceded in death a daughter, Claire Stewart. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Carter Hill, Jasper; one daughter, Karen Castleberry, Valdosta; three grandchildren, Tory Harris and his wife Erin, Tate Harris, all of jasper, and Tara Harris, Valdosta; one great granddaughter, Elizabeth Harris, also of Jasper. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 7 at Jasper First Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Thomason officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Jasper. Eva Belle Peterson

Eva Belle Peterson, 91, of Valdosta, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Lakehaven Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She was born on April 21, 1911, in Hamilton County, Fla., to the late James Henry and Alice Odessa Atkins Touchton. Mrs. Peters was a homemaker and a member of Greenwood Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Neisen of Lake Park; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wilbur and Connie Peterson of Valdosta and George and Ann Peterson of Lake Park; two sisters, Sarah Peterson of Anaheim, Calif., and Judy Brown of Jacksonville, Fla., two brothers, Dewey Touchton of Fayetteville, N.C., and Robert Touchton of Valdosta, two grandchildren, Karen Higgins of Bremen, Ga., and Richard Peterson of Lake Park; four great-grandchildren, Philip and Rachel Haddix of Bremen and Kyle and Hunter Peterson of Lake Park, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Peterson was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell Peterson in 1971. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at McLane Lakewood Funeral Home with Pastor Benny Woods officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery. Sharonda Marie Zanders

Miss Sharonda Marie Zanders, 18, was born Nov. 27, 1983, in Adel, Ga., to Ms. Tonia Lafaye Zanders. She received her education in the public school systems of both Florida and

Georgia. She was a resident of Atlanta. She attended Deliverance Life Tabernacle Church in Decatur, Ga. Minister Dosey Doe is the pastor. She was a loving and devoted mother. She was very humble, so full of life with this beautiful smile. On Saturday, June 29, 2002, in Dekalb Medical Hospital, Decatur. After a very brief illness, she answered God’s call. She is preceded in death by a special cousin, Alphonso Holsey Jr.; and two uncles, Bryant and Willie Zanders. She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Ashalei and Skylor Zanders of Atlanta; her mother, Tonia Zanders of Atlanta; father, Glendale Sowells of Jasper, Fla.; three brothers, Bryant and Joshua Zanders and Larry Walker, all of Atlanta; two sisters, Keri Battle of Columbus and Ashley Zanders of Atlanta; grandfather, Willie C. Robert M. Berrien, 53, of Valdosta, passed this life on July 3, 2002, at the South Georgia Medical Center.
