Evangelist Mariah Moore Banks

VALDOSTA — Into another of our Christian homes death has again entered, with his unrelenting face, his unhearing ears, and his sealed lips. Evangelist Mariah Moore Banks, the first child of the late Rev. Albert D. Moore, Sr. and Mrs. Maggie McGee Moore was born on Jan. 9, 1938, in Lowndes County. Mariah attended the public schools in Lowndes County and graduated from Hahira High school. She received her B.S. degree in Mathematics at Fort Valley State College and her Masters in Pure Math at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md. She was a former teacher at Westside High School where she taught for several years. Later, she continued her teaching career at Calvin Coolidge Senior High School in Washington, D. C. as a Mathematics instructor. In 1977, she became an exchange teacher at Wiesbaden Junior High School in Wiesbaden, Germany. Because of Mariah’s thirst for knowledge, she continued to prepare herself in the educational and professional world by learning new methods and techniques that she could apply in her teaching and that would serve as a learning mode for her students, colleagues as well as for herself. One of her greatest performances in Mathematics and Science netted her the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics. This award was presented to her on Oct. 26, 1988, by President Ronald Regan at the White House. Also, in 1992-93, she was listed as Who’s Who in American Education by the National Reference Institute of Chicago, Ill. She also received numerous other educational and professional awards throughout the Washington, D.C. area. She was a math teacher at the Georgia Military College of Valdosta. Mariah confessed Christ at an early age and joined Galatia Baptist Church. After moving to Washington, D.C., she became a member of Friendship Baptist Church, the Rev. B.H. Whiting, pastor. As a Sunday School teacher and a Bible Study instructor, she began to study the word of God which necessitated many hours of Bible study fasting, praying and ever striving to lift-up the name of Jesus. Mariah was a faithful Christian leader, true to God’s Word and loyal to her family and friends. In spite of all of her educational and professional awards, she always expressed that her being called into the ministry and becoming a license minister was the greatest of all. After retiring from teaching in Washington, D.C. school system in 1995, she returned to Valdosta. She attended various churches and shared her spiritual knowledge in many churches in and around the area. She gave her time and service to her childhood church Galatia Baptist Church of Mineola, Ga. She was a blessing to her family and congregation. In 1999-2000, she donated Bibles and Hymn books to Galatia Baptist Church. This was just like her, ever striving to help others to become more Christ like. Before her illness, she played a special and charitable role by teaching a Bible study class at the Valdosta Salvation Army. The Book of Life was opened for Evangelist Mariah M. Banks for 63 years. God saw her body was weakening and her soul needed rest; therefore, on July 7, 2001. God dispatched an angel of Mercy with instructions to land at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta and return with another flower for his Bouquet. Proceeding her in death: father, the late Rev. Albert D. Moore, Sr.; grandparents, the late Fender and Maria Stevenson Moore, the late Sam and Nettie Bethany McGee, and a niece, Kalitta B. Moore.
