Della Goff Barnes
VALDOSTA — Della Goff Barnes, 83, of Valdosta, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born in Colquitt County on April 13, 1918, to the late William Melton and Lillie Lee Suber Goff and had lived in Valdosta for six years. Mrs. Barnes was a Baptist. Survivors include one brother and two sisters-in-law, Robert and Cozette Goff of Lake Wales, Fla., Alma Goff of Dade City, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Gail (Jim) Hollingsworth of Lake Wales, Darrell Smithwick of Lawrenceville, Bobby (Martha) Gay of Valdosta, James Smithwick of Valdosta and Brenda Coody of Jacksonville, Fla.; her aunt, Nell Chandler of Atlanta; two brothers-in-law, Donald (Carla) Barnes of Opelika, Ala., George Barnes of Boaz, Ala.; stepchildren, Gayla (Alston) Lewis, Kathy Barnes, all of Gasden, Ala., and Steve Barnes of Crossville, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold (Jack) Barnes, a son, Roger Barnes, a sister, Margaret Smithwick and a brother, A.W. Goff. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Oak Hill Cemetery in Attalla, Ala., with the Rev. Danny Freeman officiating. — Carson McLane Funeral Home
Nancy Pearl Delaney
ADEL — Nancy Pearl Delaney, 80, of Adel, died on Jan. 23, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Adel. She was born on July 22, 1921, in Cook County to the late Little Mark and Versie Horne Tyson. She lived in Cook County most of her life. She was a homemaker and member of Massee Baptist Church. Mrs. Delaney was preceded in death by her husband, T.C. Delaney, three stepsons, Warren Delaney, Earl Delaney and Douglas Delaney; one stepdaughter, Iris Gray, one brother, Gary Tyson and one half brother, Woodard Tyson. She is survived by one son, Dennis Delaney of Adel; five daughters, Doris Tyson, Adel, Mazie Joiner of Macon, Dorothy Joiner, Adel, Mary Steinmeyer, Milledgeville, Lucy Harris of Pavo; two stepdaughters, Vernard Cone Thomasville and Margie Davis of Macon; 23 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Massee Baptist Church with the Rev. Harris Whitman and the Rev. Warren Chesser officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Douglas Eugene Hester
ADEL — Douglas Eugene Hester, 59, of Adel, died on Jan. 23, 2002, at his residence following a short illness. He was born on Jan. 14, 1943, in Cook County to Gladys Postell Hester and the late Eugene Thomas Hester. He lived in Cook County all of his life. He was a foundation officer for Southeastern Boil Weevil Eradication Foundation, Inc., Army National Guard veteran and member of Adel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Tucker Hester of Adel; one daughter, Jennifer H. Funderburk of Adel; mother, Gladys Postell Hester, Adel; two brothers, Gaines Hester, Adel, Russell Hester, Montgomery, Ala.; one sister, Dorothy Duren, Adel; two grandchildren, Karolina Funderburk and John Douglas Funderburk of Adel. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Adel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Craig Hutto, and the Rev. John Hendley officiating. Eulogies will be given by Ed Leichner, Jerry Postell, Tom Thomas Sr. and Tommy Hester. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be accepted. VALDOSTA — Alice H. Virginia “Tom” Hunter, 50, of Valdosta, died on Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, in the quietness of her home, that morning she answered the Master’s call. She was born on June 11, 1951, in Lowndes County to the late Oren D. and Allie Homer Hunter. She leaves to cherish her memories one son, Julius Hunter (Manuela), of Texas; two grandchildren, Monte’ and Daisha; seven sisters, JoAnn Statum, Jo E. Statum, Warnell Battle (Ceasar), Marilyn Powell (Ervin) and Geneva Knight (Willie
B.), all of Valdosta; Mary Thomas of Gainesville, Fla.; Lizzie Statum of Birmingham, Ala; five brothers, Eddie Roy Hunter (Grace) and Frank Statum (Florence), both of Valdosta; Carroll Hunter (Wanda) of Hahira; Jack Statum (Shirley) of Greenville, N.C., and James “Buster” Statum (Katie) of Adel; one uncle, Gus Homer (Arthoreen) of Valdosta; two aunts, Annie Mollie Hunter of Valdosta and Bessie Collins of Egg Harbor, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends. HAHIRA — Martha Inman, 76, of Hahira, was born on March 23, 1925, in Hines, Fla., to the late Maggie and Ira James Washington. She attended Providence Missionary Baptist Church. She was united in holy matrimony to the late L.W. Inman and to this union five children were born, Willie Lee Inman (Marva), Consolo Inman, Mae Helen Inman, Linda Inman and Lopez Inman, all of Adel. Two siblings preceded her in death, Lilly Washington and Nathaniel Washington. She is survived by five brothers, George (Carrie), John (Shirley), and Arthur (Willie Mae), all of Hahira, Gene (Ruby) of Louisville, Ky., and Ozell (Clemetene); two sisters, Bell Washington and Mattie Washington; 10 grandchildren, Latochia, Sharon (Andrell), Anthony, Willie (Shalonda), Petra, Micha, Melvin (Felicia), Latoya (Kenneth), Maurice (Tawanna) and Audrie; 22 great-grandchildren; and two special grandchildren that she raised as her own, Willie Scruggs and Sharon Durden; and also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. VALDOSTA — Charity Faith Jackson, 3, of Valdosta, departed this life on Jan. 19, 2002. Charity was born on June 10, 1998, in Valdosta to Carl Jr. and Hope Jackson. She leaves to cherish her memories her parents, Carl Jr. and Hope Jackson; brothers and sister, Carl III, Christian and Crystal Jackson; grandparents, Ella Cooper, Jacquelyn Jackson, Nathaniel and Wanda Whitfield, all of Valdosta, Carl Jackson Sr. of Detroit, Mich.; aunts, Natonia McClain, Lasunda Jackson, Denisha Whitfield, Madison Cooper; uncles, Peter Stewart and Jaylin Aikens; a loving caregiver, Faye Ward; and a host of loving and caring great-aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Philip A. Jones
DAHLONEGA — Philip A. Jones, 71, of Dahlonega, died on Jan. 23, 2002, at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Jones was a native of Roxboro, N.C., and a former resident of Thomasville and Valdosta. Mr Jones was a former employee of the Department of Labor in Thomasville and was office manager of the Department of Labor office in Valdosta. He retired as head of the planning department of the Georgia Department of Labor after 34 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, was involved in many service and civic organizations, and was a member of the Dahlonega United Methodist Church. Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joy Jones of Dahlonega; son and daughter- in-law, Philip A. Jr. and Lynn Jones, Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Mike Evans, Cumming; grandchildren, Lauren and Faith Evans; brothers, Elbert Jones, Roxboro, William Edgewood Jones, Raeford, N.C., Howard Jones, Roxboro; sister, Frances Padgett, Cleveland, N.C.; several other relatives also survive. A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Dahlonega United Methodist Church with Dr. Med Roach and the Rev. Gerry Davis officiating. Mary Estella Brinkley Sermons
VALDOSTA — Mary Estella Brinkley Sermons, 90, of Valdosta, demised on Jan. 16, 2002, at Smith Hospital in Hahira. Mrs. Sermons was born on June 4, 1911, in Lowndes County to the late Katie Thompson Brinkley and the late Wesley Brinkley. She was married to the late Otis B. Sermons Sr. She was a faithful member of the Riverhill Baptist Church. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her only birth child, Otis Sermons Jr., five brothers, two sisters, and one great-granddaughter. She leaves to lament her homegoing and cherish her memories one loving sister, Osceola Johnson; five grandchildren she loved and helped to raise as her own, Deloris Sermons, Cynthia Sermons, Kenneth Sermons and Anthony Sermons, all of Valdosta, and retired Sgt. Maj. Charles Sermons (Lynn) of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; eight great-grandchildren, Michelle Sermons, Ashley Gaitor and Carlos Mathis, all of Valdosta, Pvt. 1st Class Keith Gaitor of Taegus, Korea, Wesley Sermons of Oahu, Hawaii, Christy Sermons of Kailua-Kona Hawaii, LaVictor Sermons (Khadijah) of Atlanta and Staff Sgt. Charles Sermons II (Gevona) of Texas; 11 great-greatgrandchildren, Jacory, Jamaal, Justin and Jarred, all of Valdosta, Charles III, Shawn, Jasmine, all of Texas, Ndyah, Basinji, Victoria and Oscar, all of Atlanta; one adopted granddaughter, Martha Bell; one daughter-in-law, Hazel Sermons; five special friends, Irma Wolf, Sally Richardson, Eloise Lester, Jacqueline Moody and Edline Buie; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws and friends. VALDOSTA — Luvenia Collins Tyson, 93, of Valdosta, demised on Jan. 19, 2002. Mrs. Tyson was born on Dec. 3, 1908, in Madison, Fla., to the late Thomas and Virginia Joseph Collins. She attended school in the Madison County School District. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined New Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Rossie Tyson Sr. She later united with the St. James Missionary Baptist Church where she was a faithful member until her health failed. She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Catherine Tyson Battle and Gloria Tyson Mabry of Valdosta; three sons, Walter Tyson of San Diego, Calif., Curtis Tyson and Melvin Tyson, both of Valdosta; two sisters, Pearl Collins Chambers of Madison and Besadia C. Ziegler of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Collins of Miami, Fla., and Ann Collins. Also cherishing her memories are 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grands; several nieces, nephews and sorrowing friends.
