Mary Barfield Carter

VALDOSTA — Mary Barfield Carter, 60, of Valdosta died on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born on June 9, 1942, in Tifton to the late David and Mattie Barfield. Mrs. Carter was a member of the Azalea Church of God.

She is survived by her husband, Pafford Carter, Valdosta; son and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Marie Carter, Valdosta; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeannie and Chip Roberson, Diane and Malachi Boon, all of Valdosta; grandsons, Paul Carter, Wayne Carter, Lil’ Chip Roberson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty Terrell Foskey, Lake Park, Bobbie and Wallace Williamson, Quitman; brothers and sisters-in-law, Junior and Pearl Barfield, Avon Park, Fla.; Jack and Lillian Barfield, Statenville; Sonny and Juanna Barfield, Lake Park; Jimmy and Betty Barfield, Valdosta; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Carter; grandsons, “Bo Bo” Williams and Ryan Dell; parents, David and Mattie Barfield and one brother, Wayne Barfield.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Gupton and the Rev. Raymond Gabbard officiating. Burial will follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. — Carson McLane Funeral Home



Mrs. Elizabeth Foster

Elizabeth Foster was born Nov. 3, 1911, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Albritton of Valdosta, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Rufus Foster. She passed away early Tuesday morning, March 25, 2003, at her home after a brief illness.

Mrs. Foster attended Dasher High School and was a member of one of the first classes to graduate in 1930. She worked as a practical nurse in Cincinnati, Ohio, for 15 years. She attended the Erma Lee Beauty School in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1938 and returned to Valdosta to work as licensed beautician until she retired last year.

Mrs. Elizabeth Foster was a dedicated child of God and was a faithful member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, where she served faithfully until her illness. She was an active stewardess and member of the Thomas/Hudson Missionary Unit of The General Missionary Society and Trustee Emeritus.

Mrs. Foster leaves to mourn her passing one son: Rufus Foster Jr. and one daughter-in-law, Marguerite Foster, both of Valdosta; three grandchildren, Latoya Evette Foster, Michael Foster and Brittany Nicole Wade, Valdosta, Ga.; one great-grand, Zierra Sims; one goddaughter, Annie Lee Kirkland; two nephews, Edward Foster, Valdosta, Ga., and Gordon Johnson of the Bronx, N.Y.; a devoted niece, Geraldine Green of Valdosta, Ga., along with a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Special gratitude and love to her devoted nephew, Edward Foster, and loving niece, Geraldine Green.

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Foster will be held at the St. Paul A.M.E. Church with the pastor, Rev. Richard A. Yancey, officiating on Saturday, March 29, 2003, at 2 p.m. The body will lie in state at the church beginning at 1 p.m.





Doris Almeda Williams Harris

VALDOSTA — Mrs. Doris Almeda Williams Harris, 68, passed away on March 22, 2003 at South Georgia Medical Center. Mrs. Harris was born on May 10, 1934 in Berrien County to the late Arthur Williams and Plaze Morgan Williams. She resided at 109 E. Hill Ave. Apt. 401. She was married to the late Mr. Eugene Harris on July 18, 1953.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mendell Harris; one sister, Judith Brown; two brothers, Albert and Otis Williams.

She leaves to mourn three daughters, Di’ann hall (Ralph), Latrell Hickey (James), Laverne Miller (Leon); four sons, Charlie Harris (Dot), Calvin Harris, Aaron Harris (Connie); two step sons, Joe Daniel (Shirley) and Eugene Harris (Deloris); five sisters, Yvonne Williams (Jasper), Rochelle Jackson (Billy), Mary Verdell (James), Jackie Thomas (Larry), Mamie Horne (Earl); two brothers, James Williams (Ida) and Larnell Williams; three sisters-in-law, Geraldine Berry, Mary Alice Harris, and Louthina Tommlin; one brother-in-law, Willie Carl Harris; 30 grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will beheld at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the House of God Church and Elder Joyce Lewis will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. — Harrington Funeral Home





Martha G. Martin

VALDOSTA — Mrs. Martha G. Martin, 85, of Valdosta died on Tuesday, March 23, 2003, at South Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born in Thomasville, Ga. on Sept. 6, 1917, to the late Lovick Pierce and Evelyn Milner Green. Before her marriage to the late Fletcher H. Martin, she was an Elementary School Teacher in St. Petersburg, Fla., and worked with Florida Power. Mrs. Martin was a Sunday School Teacher and choir member of the First United Methodist Church of St. Petersburg. She was also a scout leader. She lived in Atlanta and then in Columbia S.C. after her marriage. She moved to Valdosta to be near her sister after the death of her husband, and joined the first United Methodist Church of Valdosta where she served as Chairman of the Altar Guild. She was also a member of South Georgia Medical Center Medical Auxiliary, Lowndes County Historical Society, and Camellia Garden Club.

Mrs. Martin is survived by her sister, Virginia Sparkman of Valdosta; two nieces, Cathy and Col. Dan Burns of Oviedo, Fla., Suzy Hall of Valdosta; two great-nephews, Scott Burns, and Austin Hall; and cousins Ruth Dickson of Nashville, Ga., Pitt Milner, Gordon B. Trulock of Atlanta and Margaret Bright of Macon.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Charles Adams of First United Methodist Church of Valdosta officiating. Maggie McGee Moore

VALDOSTA — Maggie McGee Moore, of Valdosta departed from this life on March 22, 2003, at 1:46 p.m. at Kindred Hospital of North Fla. Maggie McGee Moore was born on Nov. 2, 1919 to the late Sam and Nettie Bethany McGee.

She was educated in Lowndes County and worked for 17 years as a custodian at Valdosta State University. She was a dedicated wife and a loving and caring mother.

Maggie married Albert D. Moore on Jan. 17, 1937, and 15 children were born from their union. After giving her life to Christ at an early age, Maggie became a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and after marriage, her membership moved to Galatia Baptist Church. She served as First Lady and President of the Home-Mission Missionary. She was a faithful and devoted servant of the minister wives committee in the South Georgia Association and Union Meeting until her health failed her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Albert D. Moore Sr.; a daughter, Evangelist Mariah M. Banks; a granddaughter, Kalitta Briana Moore; mother, Nettie Bethany McGee; father, Sam McGee; four sisters and two brothers.

She leaves to lament her homegoing 14 loving children- six daughters, Concello Moore Jones (Rev. Eddie Jones) of Hahira, Marva L. Moore Carter (Dr. Lawrence Carter) of Tallahassee, Fla., Maudell Moore of Washington, D.C., Gloria J. Moore Miller (Lindell), of Columbus, Ga., Gaynell Moore Taylor of Columbus, Ga.; eight sons, Albert D. Moore Jr. of Valdosta, Robert L. Moore (Angelena) of Capitol Heights, Md., James E. Moore Sr. (Rosa) of Valdosta, Willie C. Moore (Audrey) of Far Rockaway, N.Y., Bobby J. Moore (Russel) of Valdosta, Joseph L. Moore of Columbus, Ga., Nathaniel Moore of Hahira, Bruce M. Moore (LaWanda) of Ray City; three sisters, Mary Lou Maxwell, Inez Wright, and Arvella Jackson, all of Valdosta; four brothers, the Rev. Odell McGee (Doris) of Valdosta, the Rev. Lawrence McGee (Doris) of Valdosta, the Rev. George McGee (Jimmy Lee) of Miami, Fla., and Henry McGee (Arletta) of Houston, Texas; 41 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddchildren; one special sister-in-law, Virginia B. Moore Lane (G.C.) of Hahira; one foster daughter, Paula Foust of Valdosta; two special caregivers, Mrs. Rosemary and Catherine Neal of Columbus, Ga.; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in -law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the New Hope Baptist Church. The Rev. Aaron Hopkins is Pastor and the Rev. Dr. B.R. Worthy will officiate. Burial will follow in Rocky Hill Cemetery. — Harrington Funeral Home





Demita D. Nelson

VALDOSTA — Demita D. Nelson of Valdosta was born to Mickey and Gwendolyn Nelson on Sept. 14, 1972. God called her home on March 20, 2003, at the Archibold Hospital in Thomasville, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her father, Mickey; grandmothers Ruby and Lillie; grandfather, Luther; and great-grandmother, Mary Alice.

She leaves a loving mother, Gwendolyn; stepfather, Rodney; three sisters, Latonya, Mikki, and Michelle; four brothers, Michael, Poppy, Lindell, and Joseph; loving grandparents, Melvin, Rufus, Jimmy, Patsy T., and Minnie J.; 26 aunts, Diane, Rachel, Deloris, Elaine, Lorretha, Melanie, Stephanie, Melvina, Eddie Mae, Joyce, Renee, Jeannie, Louise, Kathlene, Loretta, Shirley, Gloria, Dorothy, Willie Bee, Juanita, Fannie, Shirley J., Tammy, Lajuana, Mary A., and Minerva; six great-aunts, Evester, Louise, Katherine, Mattie, Barbara, and Deborah; 14 uncles, Melvin Jr., Clifford, James, Otis, Marvin, Freddie, Raymond, Joseph, Charles, Harry, Herbert, James S., Adolphus, and Nathan; three great-uncles, Clyde, Willie S., and Willie G.; six nieces and nephews, Alexander, Cedrick, MyRon, Marlon, Jayden, Dessirae, Lil Demita, and Baby Nelson; two very special cousins, Latesha Bradley and Aaron Wilfork, Jr.; one special god mother, Ms. Mattie B.; two special friends, Monoletto and Jennifer; three adopted sisters, Carlene, Marlene, and Barbara; one adopted brother, Curtis.

Iris Laurene Cowart Wilkinson

VALDOSTA — Iris Laurene Cowart Wilkinson, 95, formerly of Valdosta, died on Wednesday, March 25, 2003, at Hospice of West Palm Beach, Fla. She was born July 5, 1907 in Emanuel County, Ga. to the late Emmitt and Allie Cowart. Mrs. Wilkinson lived most of her life in Valdosta, until moving to West Palm Beach, in 1991. She was an active member of the Valdosta Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors are her daughter, Iris (Jerre) Hall of West Palm Beach; three grandchildren, Cary (Jennifer) Hall of Telford, Pa., Keith Hall of Orlando, Fla., Barbara (Dan) Moore of Kennesaw, and seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, E.P. “Buck” Cowart, Jr. of Valdosta, Louis (Frances) Cowart of Vidalia, sister, Louise Wrenn of Palatka, Fla.; and two sisters-in-law, Juanice Wilkinson of Valdosta and Mary Lou Wilkerson of Atlanta. Mrs. Wilkinson was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Wilkinson, Sr., son, Robert Wilkinson, Jr., brother, Jack Cowart, and sisters, Ruth Blackburn and Mae Chapman.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 28, 2003, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Elder Bob Dickerson officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home from 12:30 -2 p.m. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. C.W.O. Frederick E. Bell, Sr., U.S.A.F. Retired, of Lawrenceville, and formerly of Valdosta died on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Haven House Hospice in Atlanta. Graveside services with military honors are scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.
