Melissa Ann “Missy” Hodges
HAHIRA — Melissa Ann “Missy” Hodges, 15, of Hahira died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born on July 21, 1986, in Valdosta and was a lifelong resident of the area. Missy was a student at Lowndes High School where she was a member of the FFA. She was a member of the Hahira First Baptist Church and the Youth Group. Missy had been a contestant in the Miss Honey Bee Pageant for many years. Survivors include her parents, Marvin and Kim Hodges of Hahira; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Brandon Hodges of Hahira, Paul and Amelia Hodges of Copenhagen, Denmark; one sister and brother-in-law, Chrissy and Eion Vandekerkhoff of Rockford, Mich.; grandmothers, Ella Wheeler of Hahira and Clyta Chambers of Bitely, Mich.; aunts and uncles, Donnie and Carolyn Cundiff of Rocky Mount, Va., Doug and Samantha Hodges of Nashville, Ga.; numerous other aunts and uncles in Michigan. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Earl Wheeler and Jerry Chambers. Missy was also preceded in death by her special friend, Matt Newell. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Hahira First Baptist Church with the Rev. David Gordon and Mr. Paul Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Eva Register Johnson
LAKELAND, Ga. — Eva Register Johnson, 94, of Lakeland, Ga. passed away early Wednesday morning Oct. 3, 2001, in the Louis Smith Memorial Hospital in Lakeland after declining health. She was born in Clinch County on May 24, 1907, and lived in Lanier County most of her life. She was active in the Foster Grandparent program at the Lanier County Elementary School for several years. Her belief was Primitive Baptist, she attended all churches in this area, and considered Burnt Church her home church. She was preceded in death by her husband Carlie F. Johnson, and son-in-law, John Marra. Survivors include her daughter, Myrtle Marra of Jacksonville, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Wesley and Charlene Johnson of Lakeland, Ga. six grandchildren, Marilyn Kilpatrick of Jacksonville, Fla., John Marra, Jr., St. Augustine, Fla., James Marra, Jacksonville, Fla., David Johnson, Lakeland, Ga., David Sears, Norfolk, Va., Lisa Saul, Tifton; nine great- grandchildren; one great- great- grandchild; one sister, Rena R. Brantley of Lakeland, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Louelle Register, Ray City; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Lakeland Chapel of Music Funeral Services, with burial following in Burnt Church Cemetery. Matthew Newell
VALDOSTA — Matthew Newell, 17, died on Tuesday, Oct. 2001, at South Georgia Medical Center. Formerly of Mobile, Ala., he had lived in Valdosta since 1990. Matthew was a student at Lowndes County High School and a member of Pine Grove Community Baptist Church. He was a member of the Moody Blue Tide Swim Team for seven years and he loved the Alabama Crimson Tide. Survivors include his father and mother, Steve and Nancy Newell; brother, Steven “Brad” Newell; sister, Christina “Renee” Newell, all of Valdosta; maternal grandmother, Maria Couch of Mobile, Ala.; paternal grandmother, Dolores Newell of Mobile, Ala.; aunts, Linda Igo, Linda Dickens, Becky Newell, all of Mobile, Ala.; uncles, Donald Newell, David Newell, Jimmy Dickens, Tommy Dickens, all of Mobile, Ala.; several cousins also of Mobile. Matthew was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Joseph Dickens and Donald Newell. Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Pine Grove Community Baptist Church. The Rev. Terrell L. Rogers
NAYLOR — Mr. Terrell L. Rogers, 66, formerly of Naylor, Ga. died on Oct. 2, 2001, at Memorial Convalescent Center. He was born on March 5, 1935, in Lanier County to the late Charlie Allen and Alice Baker Rogers. He lived in Lowndes County most of his life. He is survived by his wife, Vera Gandy Rogers of Sparks; one son and daughter-in-law, Terry W. and Michelle Rogers of Quitman; five daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Carroll Bullard of Adel, Teresa and Van Gibbs, Hahira, Sherry and David Huckaby, Adel, Karen and Tom Brooks, Douglasville, Melinda and Steve Weeks, Adel; 13 grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Carroll Rogers. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Chapel of Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home Hwy. 41. S. with the Rev. BELLEVUE, Neb. — TSGT USAF (Ret.) Charlene “Chuck” Simpson 63, of Bellevue, Neb. died on Sept. 26, 2001, in Bellevue, Neb. He was born on June 15, 1938, in Valdosta. He is survived by his wife, Irene of Bellevue, Neb.; sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Mary of Bellevue, Christopher and Jane of Seward, Paul and Becky of Clarksville, Tenn.; sisters, Corine Stone, of Valdosta, Marie and Willie Webb of Hahira, Laura and Henry Newman, Valdosta, Dorothy and Ashley Holton, Hahira; brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Dorothy of Valdosta; grandchildren, Shannon and Shawn Simpson, Tony and Mandy Mendinger, Nathaniel and Natalle; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. ALAPAHA — Perry Lee Tatum, 79, of Alapaha died on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in Suwannee County Fla. He was born on May 5, 1922, in Berrien County to Harley and Stella Rowe Tatum. He was a retired machinist for Nashville Textile, Army veteran of WWII and member of Alapaha Church of God. He is survived by one sister, Ruby Moore of Nichols; and a very devoted aunt, Mamie Griffin of Adel. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. WHITE SPRINGS, Fla. — Clayton “Robert” Waldron, 60, of White Springs, Fla. passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in Akron, Ohio. The Lake City, Fla. native was a farmer and veteran of the United States Army. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Linda Morgan Waldron, White Springs, Fla.; two sons, Quinn Waldron, Lake City, Fla. and Kerry Waldron, Thomaston, Ga.; one brother, Tommy Waldron, Lake City, Fla.; one grandson, Josh Waldron, Orlando, Fla.; and his mother-in-law, Nancy Morgan, White Springs, Fla.
