PFC Joshua Gordon Bailey
LAKELAND — PFC Joshua Gordon Bailey, 20, of Lakeland, passed away early Saturday morning, Aug. 31, 2002, at the residence of his friends. He was born in Lowndes County and lived in Lakeland all his life before joining the U. S. Marine Corp. in November. Survivors include his parents, Butch and Willie Mae Bailey of Lakeland; sister and brother-in-law, Emily and Chris Crews of Valdosta; paternal grandmother, Frances Bailey of Lakeland; and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Lakeland with full military honors. Teresa M. Braswell
ADEL — Teresa M. Braswell, 64, of Adel, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Memorial Hospital. Born on May 31, 1938, in Albany, Mrs. Braswell had lived in Adel for the past 22 years. She was a member of the Adel United Methodist Church and manager and agent for the Adel Insurance Company. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Glyn Myers, and one granddaughter, Jennifer Marie Touchton. Survivors include her husband, F. Dale Braswell of Adel; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Maria Braswell of Blythewood, S.C.; four daughters and one son-in-law, Vicki Sikes of Valdosta, Cindy and Marshall Sirmans of Ray City, Linda Braswell of Adel, and Sara Braswell of Adel; her mother, Annette M. Davis of Nashville; one sister, Glynnette Scott of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the Adel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Craig Hutto and the Rev. Larry Land officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be tonight from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home. Faye Carter
LAKE PARK — Faye Carter, 58, of Lake Park, passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at her home after a lengthy illness. She was born on March 19, 1944, in Lake Park, to the late Edgar and Stella Herring. Mrs. Carter was a homemaker and a member of Lake Park Church of Christ. She previously worked for First Federal Savings and Loan and was a 4-H volunteer leader. Mrs. Carter is survived by her husband of 36 years, Ronald Carter of Lake Park; one son, Andy Carter of Lake Park; one daughter, Joy Carter of Lake Park; one brother and sister-in-law, Lowell and Shirley Herring of Lake Park; one sister and brother-in-law, Linda Kay and Delmar Clarke of Hermosa, S.D.; three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Blanche and Doug Smith and Jean Carter of Lake Park and Myra Rohm of Boise, Idaho; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives; four aunts, Edna Waldron of Lake Park, Molly Carpenter of Valdosta, Merle Miller of Jasper, Fla., and Mary Tomlinson of Lake Park. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. Evans McMullen officiating. Burial will be in Dasher Cemetery. Lissie Southall Hinton
VALDOSTA — Lissie Southall Hinton, 96, of Valdosta, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Heritage House Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Daughter of the late Levi and Arrie Lightsey Hutchinson, she was born in Lowndes County on June 26, 1906. Mrs. Hinton had worked as a sales clerk and in the office of Schwartz Department Store in downtown Valdosta. She was a longtime member of Central Church of Christ and her church members were very faithful to her. Lissie was much beloved by her loving family and many friends. We all look forward to our reunion in heaven. Surviving are her daughters a
nd sons-in-law, Viva and Henry Joiner of Nashville, Glennell and Gordon House of Valdosta; sons and daughters-in-law, Arlon and Peggy Southall of Martinez, Harvard and Jackie Southall of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandsons; five granddaughters; a number of great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillie Mae Deas of Clyattville; and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. John Klimko and Mr. G. R. Holton officiating. Sandy Joiner Coppage, granddaughter to Mrs. Hinton, will assist in the eulogy. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. VALDOSTA — C. O. Swilley, 88, of Valdosta, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born in Lowndes County on April 2, 1914, to the late Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Swilley. Mr. Swilley was a farmer and a member of Grace Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Emey Lee Swilley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wyonne and Larry Templin and Sheila and Phillip Badely, all of Valdosta; five sons and six daughters-in-law, Lavon and Sharon Swilley, Donald and Carole Swilley, all of Valdosta, Leohn and Kay Swilley of Quitman, Johnny and Wanda Swilley and Wayne and Maxine Swilley and Jo Ann Swilley, all of Valdosta; 21 grandchildren and their spouses, Robin and Victor Wade, Laurie and David Dawson, Mark Swilley, Donnie and Donna Swilley, Debbie and Scott McBrayer, Chuck and Michelle Smith, Larry and Nikie Smith, Lori and Brent Lehman, Sheila Scott, Christopher Bartley, Andrew Swilley, Tim and Tonya Swilley, Danny and Dana Swilley, Wendy and Ben Neal, Kevin Swilley, Scott and Kimberly Templin, Stacey and Nelson Reynolds, Belinda Swilley, Tiffany Swilley, Joshua Badley and Caleb Badley; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Roscoe Swilley of Echols County; a sister, Cenova Wilkins of Plant City, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sallie Herring and Cubie Watford; one brother, P. F. Swilley; and three grandsons, Michael Swilley, Keith Swilley, and David Swilley. Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Phillip Badley officiating. Burial will follow in Swilley Hill Cemetery. Marcus Thornton
VALDOSTA — Marcus Thornton, 78, of Valdosta, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Born in Valdosta on Sept. 3, 1923, to the late Johnny and Eunice Walker Thornton, he was a retired logger and a member of Azalea City Church of God. He enjoyed playing his harmonica and was devoted to God. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Sarah Thornton of Quitman; his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Robert Brantley of Valdosta; his stepson, Del and Pam Nary of Valdosta; his grandchildren, Diana and James Terry of Valdosta, Randy and Melissa Brantley of Mr. Airy, N.C., Paul and Connie Thornton of Lehman, James and Tammy Thornton Norris, Robert Thornton, Casey and Andrea Chandler, all of Lowndes County; sister-in-law, Hilda Lynn of Valdosta; nine great-grandchildren; one brother and three sisters. His wife, Lois Thornton; his sister, Mary Simpson; and brother, Leonard Thornton, preceded him in death. Services for Marcus Thornton will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Sardis Baptist Church with the Rev. Benny Daniels officiating. Burial will follow at Sardis Cemetery.
