Ora Jane Cornell

LAKE PARK– Ora Jane Cornell, 84, of Lake Park, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at her home after a short illness. She was born on Feb. 1, 1918, in Turner County to the late James William and Lizzie Mary McCarty Wheeler and was formerly of Orlando, Fla., and had lived in Echols County for 11 years. Mrs. Cornell was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean G. and Juhan L. Reid of Echols County, Mary Lois Payton-Parker and Carroll Parker of Lake Park; one brother and sister-in-law, Clarence Jackson and Nelva Wheeler of Lizella; six grandchildren, Larry and Teresa Reid, Ralph and Debbie Reid, Joyce and Chester Register Sr., all of Echols County, Jerry and Tina Saam of Jacksonville, Fla., Deborah and Gary Coaker of Tallahassee, Fla., Leann and Britt Stephens of Atlanta, stepchildren, Lloyd Cornell, Mickey Cornell, Larry Cornell, Joel Dampier, Emory Dampier and James Dampier and their families, stepgrandchildren, David and Paula Parker, Debbie and John Herring, all of Lake Park; 32 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Judson Cornell and four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Boykin and Royce McCurdy officiating. Burial will follow in Macedonia Cemetery. Mrs. Cornell will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. Steve Hamby

MARTINEZ — Steve Hamby, 53, of Martinez, passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 16, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital. A native of Valdosta, he had resided in the Augusta area since moving from Lawrenceville in 1990. Steve had been an engineer with BellSouth for 29 years. A person who always put others before himself, he will be remembered for his contributions and coordination of the Handicap Fishing Pier project at Mistletoe State Park in 1994. He was a member of the BellSouth Pioneers and was honored by his fellow members at Steve Hamby Day’ in April 2002.

Steve is survived by his wife of 18 years, Cindy Hamby; one son, Stephen “Scott” Hamby; one daughter, Kristin Blair Hamby; his mother, Sue Hamby, Valdosta; two brothers, Ferrell Calvin Hamby, Appling, Michael Lee Hamby, Valdosta; and several nieces and nephews. A gathering of remembrance will be from 6-8 p.m. today at The Partridge Inn — Richmond Room, 2110 Walton Way, Augusta.

John S. Hendrick

JASPER, Fla. — John S. Hendrick, 86, of Jasper, passed away early Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at South Georgia Medical Center.

Mr. Hendrick was a rural mail carrier for 20 years and was a farmer. Hendrick was a member of the John M. Caldwell Lodge No. 70 and was a Past District Deputy Grand Master of the 9th Masonic District and World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Bernice Hendrick, Jasper; one son, Paul M. Hendrick, Jacksonville, Fla.; one daughter, Barbara Klepper (Lowell), Jennings, Fla.; two sisters, Agnes Shearer, Bowling Green, Ky. and Lois Kring, Black Mountain, N.C.; four grandchildren, John M. Hendrick (Pam), Brooksville, Fla., Anne Elizabeth Hendrick, Charlottesville, Va., Robert S. Klepper (Traci), Tallahassee, Fla., and Kevin L. Klepper, Greenville, S.C.; and two great-grandchildren.

Dolly R. Hutchinson (Aunt Geech)

VALDOSTA — Dolly R. Hutchinson (Aunt Geech), 88, of Valdosta, born on Sept. 8, 1914, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 17, 2003, at her home. A native and lifelong resident of Lowndes County, she was a homemaker, widow of Samuel Levi Hutchinson and a member of Mt. Pleasant Church of Christ.

Mrs. Hutchinson was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Pearlie Laura Howell Vann; sisters, Effie Hughes, Callie Lightsey, Clyde Carter, Ethel Dasher; three brothers, Burton Vann, Marrie Vann, Bill Vann, and a granddaughter, Lisa Boyd Phelps.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha Boyd, Valdosta; son, Sammie Hutchinson, Valdosta; grandchildren, Nancy Dousharm, Craig Hutchinson and Gary Boyd; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Nix

NASHVILLE — Evelyn Nix, 88, of Nashville, died on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Berrien Nursing Center. She was born on Nov. 26, 1914, in Berrien County to J. Henry and Toye Patten Mathis.

Mrs. Nix was a homemaker and member of Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

She was the widow of Willie Burnice Nix who died in 1980.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Billie Ruth and Gene Wright of Nashville, Gay and Harold Glover, Pelham, Ava N. Kelley, Hawkinsville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell “Sonny” and Anita Nix, Bainbridge, Emerson and Mattie Nix, Valdosta, Wilson and Denise Nix, Red Oak, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marie McConnell of Valdosta.

Julius Williams

VALDOSTA — Julius Williams, 64, of Valdosta, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born on Nov. 15, 1938, in Baxley to the late Telford Williams and Mamie Solomon Williams and had lived in Lowndes County most of his life. Mr. Williams was of the Church of Christ faith and retired as a meat market manager.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Helen Carter Williams of Valdosta; one daughter and son-in-law, Roxanne and Kevin Thompson of Columbus; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Timothy (Timmy) Julius Williams of Valdosta, Teddy Doyle and Trish Williams of Stockton; six special grandchildren, Danielle Thompson of Columbus, Dusty Williams of Stockton, Josh Thompson, twins Luke and Lance Thompson, all of Columbus, and Tiffany (Tiff) Williams of Stockton; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Annie Ray of Gainesville, Fla., Geraldeen Jenkins, Tina and Charles Miller, all of Valdosta, Madeline and James Condrey of Columbus, Yvonne and Linwood Porter of Valdosta; one brother and three sisters-in-law, Wilton and Margie Adams of Pavo, Joree Adams Barwick of Quitman and Mary Adams of St. Petersburg, Fla.; mother-in-law, Annie Ruth Carter; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Tommy and Phyllis Carter of Valdosta, Gene and Patsy Carter of Lake Park, Winston and Sue Carter of Dasher, Betty and Foster Stanley of Boston, Charles and Linda Carter of Statenville, Melvin and Beth Carter, Diane Callahan, Randy and Mechelle Carter, all of Lake Park; and numerous nieces and nephews.
