Charity Cowart
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Charity Cowart, 93, of Tallahassee, Fla. died on Friday, Aug. 31, 2001. Mrs. Cowart was a native of Bemiss, Ga. and had lived in Tallahassee since 1936. She worked at Mae’s Shop in Tallahassee for 30 years and then was self employed with The Carriage Shop for 10 years. She was a member of the Church of Christ Timberlane Road. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Cowart; son, Ralph L. Cowart; parents John Daniel and Susie Robinson Peters; sister, Mildred Ethel Peters Copeland; brothers, James Emery Peters, Irvin H. Peters; cousins Jesse and Sally W. Davis. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Freda Cowart and Betty Abbott Peters; nephew, Melvin and Beverly S. Peters; nieces and nephews, David and Mary Copeland, Jake and Bashie Copeland, Robert and Joyce Copeland, Carlton and Linda Copeland, Kenneth and Carolyn Copeland Jackson and Almarene Copeland Dawkins; one grandchild, John Cowart of Tallahassee; two great- grandchildren, John Jordan; and Rebecca Charity Cowart of Tallahassee. Frank Gleason Sr.
Frank Gleason Sr., 61, of Valdosta, Ga., passed away Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at his residence after a brief illness. He was born in Fulton, Ga., and had lived in Valdosta for the past 22 years. He served 20 years in the United States Air Force, retiring at Moody AFB. He was superintendent of Moody AFB Housing Maintenance. He was Baptist by faith. Survivors include his wife, Gwen Gleason, Valdosta; daughter, Sherry Gleason, Sacramento, Calif.; three sons, Frank Gleason Jr., Valdosta, James Gleason, Valdosta, Steven Gleason, Valdosta; a special grandson, David Gleason, Valdosta; and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight. Music Funeral Services Inc. of Valdosta is serving the Gleason family.
Joseph James Matchett
Mr. Joseph James Matchett, age 84, resided at 4360 Forrest St., Valdosta, Ga., expired on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on June 26, 1918, to the late Rev. Turner Matchett Sr. and Irene Wright Matchett. He was educated in the Lowndes County School System. Mr. Matchett was united in Holy Matrimony in 1947 to California Riley Matchett. He became a Christian at an early age, always uniting with the wherever he went. He left Valdosta and resided in Detroit, Mich., where he was a construction worker for several years. Mr. Matchett later moved to Fort Myers, Fla., where he retired. After retirement, he returned home to Valdosta. Upon his return to Valdosta, he became an active member of the Mount Vienna AME Church. He served as a steward, dedicated choir member and a member of the Sons of Allen. He was preceded in death by one son, Leroy W. Matchett, and seven brothers, Irwin, Hezekiah, Turner, Benjamin, D.C., Lorene, and Arnett. Two sisters, Vernita and Leah. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his faithful and devoted wife, California Riley Matchett; one daughter, Rev. Leah Gaskin Fitchue of Hampton, Va.; one granddaughter, Eboy Joy Fitchue of Philadelphia, Pa.,; two sisters, Rosalie Baker (Nathaniel) of Valdosta, Ga., and Queen McDonald of San Diego, Calif; two loving sisters-in-law, Velma Reed Matchett and Georgia Stafford Riley of Valdosta; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Mount Vienna AME Church. Rev. Eugene Foster, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be at the church cemetery. Stevens Funeral Home of Valdosta is handling professional arrangements.
Janet Elaine Prairie
VALDOSTA — Janet Elaine Prairie, 60, of Valdosta passed away at her home early Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, surrounded by her family. She was born in
DuQuoin, Ill. on Oct. 9, 1940, and grew up in Kankakee, Ill. where she attended school. Mrs. Prairie was a member of the Ousley Baptist Church where she was a dedicated Sunday School Teacher of all ages. She was a caring nurse and a devoted mother to her family and many others as well. She was an avid reader. Survivors include her husband, Richard Prairie; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Thomas Sims; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Allison Prairie, Michael and Lacherisa Prairie; her mother, Dorothy Adcock, all of Valdosta; her brother and sister-in-law, David and Jane Adcock of Eagle Rock, Mo.; grandchildren, Justin and Sara Sims, John Pierre and Ivan Prairie, all of Valdosta, Megan Prairie of Ocala, Fla. and Rebecca Prairie of Valdosta; numerous other relatives, special friends, Junior and Connie Brown and Wayne Reed and family. She was preceded in death by her father, William C. Adcock and her brother, William S. Adcock. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Dillard Ensley officiating. Burial will follow in the Ousley Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Ousley Baptist Church Building Fund. — Carson McLane Funeral Home
Daniel “Danny” Taylor
SPARKS — Mr. Daniel “Danny” Taylor, 41, of Sparks died on Sept. 9, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Adel. He was born on Aug. 29, 1960, in Broward County, Fla. to Lois Davenport Parnell and the late Warren Edward “Sonny” Taylor. He lived most of his life in Cook County. He was a retired mail carrier, U.S. Army veteran and member of Friendship Baptist Church, Barney, Ga. He is survived by his wife, Diane Blakely Taylor of Sparks; one son, Kenny Taylor, Sparks; two daughters, Brandy Williams and Brittney Williams, both of Sparks; mother and step father, Lois and Tom Parnell, Quitman; one brother, Brent and Molly Taylor of St. Louis, Mo. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home, Hwy. 41 South with the Rev. David Porter officiating. Burial will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery Annex. Maude Davis Wilson
NASHVILLE, Ga. — Mrs. Maude Davis Wilson, 95, of Nashville, Ga. departed this life Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Valdosta. She is survived by one sister, Laurel Johnson of Adel. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at New Bethel Baptist Church in Nashville, Ga. The Rev. Marvin Smith Sr., Pastor will officiate. Mr. Dan McCranie, 61, of Sparks died Sept. 10, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Adel. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at at Brushy Creek Baptist Church.
