Essie Mae Register Cook
HAHIRA — Essie Mae Register Cook, 87, of Hahira, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in Daytona Beach, Fla., after a lengthy illness. She was born on Nov. 25, 1914, in Cook County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Jonah Register of which she was one of their 12 children. She had lived in Miami, Fla., for many years before returning to Hahira. Mrs. Cook had been residing in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the past 14 years. Mrs. Cook was a long-time member of the New Friendship Primitive Baptist Church in Hahira and a former member of the Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church in Miami, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Calvin Cook Sr. to whom she was married for 54 years. Survivors include a daughter, Myrna Branch of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a son, Henry Calvin Cook Jr. of Live Oak, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Caulie Register of Adel; two sisters, Virginia Graham of Adel and Georgia Tomlinson of Brandenton, Fla. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at the New Friendship Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Thad Marshall and Elder Dwight Marshall officiating. Jesse Adolph Hughes
VALDOSTA — Jesse Adolph Hughes, 71, of Valdosta, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at his home. He was born on Oct. 9, 1930, in Lowndes County to the late Jesse Thomas and Maggie Kate Becton Hughes and was a lifelong resident of this area. Mr. Hughes was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church. He was retired from the District Health Office as Environmental Health Program Director and after his retirement he worked part-time at South Georgia College in Douglas with the Boys Basketball Program. Survivors include his wife, Laurie Fiveash Hughes of Valdosta; a son and daughter-in-law, Wade and Suelane Hughes of Douglas; a daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Mark Schmitz of Carrollton; six grandchildren, Robin Hughes, Jason Hughes, Kyle Holt, Melissa Holt, Jessica Schmitz and Matthew Schmitz.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4, 2002 in Sunset Hill Cemetery with the Rev. V.L. Daughtery officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. — Carson McLane Funeral Home
Lula ‘LuLu’ Robinson
HOMERVILLE — Lula “LuLu” Robinson, 62, of Homerville, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born in DuPont and received her public school education there; however, Waycross was her home for many years before she moved recently to Valdosta. Her parents were the late William Powell and Corine Gaines Nixon. She is survived by a twin sister and brother-in-law, Lillie Mae and Fred Thomas; a brother and sister-in-law, W.T. and Dessie Williams, all of Dupont; special friend, Edward Kirk of Valdosta; goddaughter Martha William of Lakeland; and many other relatives. Friends are being received at Fred Thomas’ residence on Copeland Road in DuPont. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Browns Chapel in Homerville with the Rev. Ruth Rhymes Shingler
VALDOSTA — Ruth Rhymes Shingler, 85, of Valdosta, died suddenly on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002. A resident of this area for the past 63 years, Mrs. Shingler was born in Crystal Springs, Miss., to the late Thomas and Blanche Rhymes. Before retirement, she taught for 20 years in the Valdosta School System and was a member of the Book Review Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was active in the Christian Homebuilders Sunday School Class. She is survived by two daughters, Sally Kurrie and Susan Shingler, both of Valdosta; three grandchildren, Thompson Kurrie III, Lee Shingler Kurrie and Mary Margaret Kurrie, all of Valdosta; and a sister, Emma Catt, of
Clinton, Miss.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vinson P. Shingler, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Rhymes Kurrie, and a sister, Elizabeth E. Stump. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Charles Adams will officiate. Michelle Bishop Todd
SYLVANIA — Michelle Bishop Todd, 30, of Sylvania, died Tuesday afternoon at her residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was born in Lowndes County, was a graduate of Sumpter County High School in Americus and Altamaha Tech in Jesup. She was a member of Sylvania First United Methodist Church where her father serves as minister. Prior to her illness, she was manager of a Taco Bell restaurant. Survivors include two daughters, Cathryn Todd and Sebastian Todd, both of Sylvania; her parents, the Rev. H. Dwight Sr. and Carolyn Brown Bishop of Sylvania; one sister, Nicole Bishop of Tifton; one brother, Hank Bishop of Sylvania; maternal grandmother, Betty Eloise Brown of Sylvania; three aunts, Barbara Davis of McBean, Joyce Bishop of Lyons and Renee Collins of Abeliene, Texas; and several cousins also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Todd will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Sylvania First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Rush officiating. Burial will be held at 4 p.m. today in the Willacoochee Cemetery in Willacoochee with the Rev. Tommy Daniels officiating. Pallbearers will be David Wall, David Smith, Daniel Smith, David Hinson, David Boddiford, Hobson Parker, Cliff Chaney and Joseph Powell.
