George Fiveash Sr.
HAHIRA — George Fiveash, Sr., 89, of Hahira, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Lakehaven Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. He was born in Lowndes County on May 12, 1913, to the late Charlton and Alice Tomlinson Fiveash and had lived here his entire life. Mr. Fiveash was a retired farmer, a retired grocer and formerly owner and operator of Fiveash Grocery. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith, a member of the Appalachian Trail Riders and he loved his horses. Mr. Fiveash was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys B. Fiveash on April 10, 1996. He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, George M. Jr. and Myrna Fiveash of Cecil, Jim C. and Linda Fiveash and John G. Fiveash of Hahira; two daughters and sons-in-law, Laurie and Adolph Hughes of Valdosta and Janie and Kirby Hemby of Lake Park; 10 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; two brothers, Vernon Fiveash of Altorus, Fla. and C.A. Fiveash of Tampa, Fla.; four sisters, Mary Lou Deloach, Iris Register, Pearl Lang and Doris Fiveash Hullett, all of Valdosta; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the Martin McLane Funeral Home in Hahira with Elder Thad Marshall and the Rev. Hugh Deloach officiating. LAWRENCEVILLE — Miss Nancy Forrest Griffitts of Lawrenceville, formerly of Valdosta, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, Snellville. The Rev. Dave Farmer will officiate. Miss Griffitts was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by a special friend, Rodney Simmons, Valdosta; sisters, Jean G. Arnold, Dacula, Helen Patricia Riddle, Douglasville; niece, Brenda and Bob Brown, Lawrenceville; nephews, Burt and Diana Acree, Monroe, Bruce and Angie Acree, Carnesville; great-nephews, Christopher, Taylor and Whitney Brown, all of Lawrenceville, Josh Acree, Hampton, Jeremy and Andrew Acree, Carnesville; great nieces, Sarah and Meagan Acree, Carnesville. Roland Felix Hammock, Sr.
PINETTA, Fla. — Roland Felix Hammock, Sr. went to be with the Lord July 18, 2002, at Lake Park of Madison Convalescent Center. He was born Jan. 9, 1918, in Pinetta, Fla., son of the late Frank and Bertha Blair Hammock of Pinetta. Locally known as “Grand Daddy”. He farmed all of his life, as well as working for Owens Illinois Paper Mill, where he retired after 28 years of service. He was a member of Pinetta Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Eva Mae Hurst; two sisters, Ruth Keeling, Jennings, Fla., Illa Zipperer, Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Mance Hammock of Clyattville. Survivors include two sons, Roland and Mary Hammock, Clyattville, Andrew Hammock, Alachua, Fla.; four daughters, Patricia Hammock, Pinetta, Jolene and Franklin Rogers, Pinetta, Sandra and Chick Zoller, Pinetta, Libby and John Buckhalt, Jefferson, N.C.; one brother, Jack Hammock, Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Lounette and Jack Longworthy, Morriston, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Louvenia Hammock, Clyattville; eight grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; and great- nieces and nephews. ADEL — Ed Hughie (Hollis Lamar Minter), 62, passed awa
y Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville after a sudden illness. He was born on July 17, 1940, in Bartow County to Alvin Clifford Minter and Velvia Strickland. Mr. Hughie was self employed as a mechanic and enjoyed fishing. He was of the Holiness faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Faye Benton. Survivors include his wife, Helen Hughie of Adel; one son and daughter-in-law, Hollis and Barbara Minter of Moultrie; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Faye and Robert Freeman of Enigma, Carolyn A. and Johnny Chims of Villa Rica, Ga., and Velia Ann Benton of Douglasville; two step daughters, Susan and Tim Staley of Atlanta, and Patricia and Richard Raineri of Inverness, Fla.; one brother, Harold Minter of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; special friend, Glenn Store of Gainesville, Fla.; mother-in-law, Marie Harris of Adel; and several nieces and nephews. Mariah Kyer
VALDOSTA — Mariah Kyer, 84, of Valdosta was born on Nov. 5, 1917, in Lowndes County to the late Arthur L. Mitchell and Eseland Mitchell. Mariah Kyer spent a lifetime in Lake Park. She was married to the late Freeman Williams and Cleveland Kyer. She worked many years at the Lake Haven Nursing Home in Valdosta where she retired. She was a faithful member of St. Luke Freewill Baptist Church of Lake Park and remained active until her failing health. She was the mother of the church and served as a Sunday School president, teacher, and secretary. On Thursday, July 11, 2002, Mrs. Kyer passed this life at the Crestwood Nursing Home in Valdosta. Mrs. Kyer was preceded in death by two sons, Elliott Kyer and Cleveland Kyer; four brothers, Oscar Mitchell, Edmond Mitchell, O.K. Mitchell, and Jessie Mitchell; and one grandson, Frank Chester Williams; one daughter-in-law, Johnnie Mae Williams. She leaves to cherish her memories one son, Frank R. Williams of Lake Park; one sister, Naomi Tompkins of Miami, Fla.; two granddaughters, Gwendolyn L. Williams (Jim) of Victorville, Calif. and Naomi Horton of Valdosta; three grandsons, Willie C. Williams (Grace) and Artha Williams both of Lake Park and Frank R. Williams of Detroit, Mich.; one great- granddaughter, DeKeshia D. Williams of Victorville, Calif.; three great- grandsons, DeWayne D. Williams of Baton Rouge, La., Derrick D. Williams of Victorville, Calif. and Willie C. Williams Jr. of Valdosta; one great- great- granddaughter, Saria T. Williams of Victorville, Calif.; two nieces, Earlie Mae Simmons (Rawland) of Pelham, Ala. and Shirley Thomas of Bronx, N.Y.; one step daughter, Carrie Jenkins; one step son, Cleveland Kyer; numerous step great- great- grandchildren; one God daughter, Christine Jones; and a host of friends, brothers and sisters in Christ. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2002, at St. Luke Freewill Church in Lake Park. The Rev. Sam Williams, Pastor will officiate. Rev. Lynn Roberts Sr.
VALDOSTA — The Rev. Lynn Roberts Sr., 95, of Valdosta was born on July 14, 1906, in Barney to the late Ike Roberts and Aldonia Roberts. He obtained his education through the Brooks County School System. He later married Miss Linnie E. Goss. “Rev.” was a strong man, in his ministry, his house and his community. Those who had the pleasure of really knowing him, knew he said what he meant, and meant what he said. He was a member of the Rocky Mount Zion AME Church of Barney, Ga. The Rev. Dallas Thomas was the pastor. He pastored the following churches: Bethel AME of Ray City; Mount Zion AME of Valdosta; Mount Vienna AME of Valdosta; Saint James AME of Nashville; Saint James AME of Adel; Emanuel A
ME of Dixie, Ga.; Pidcock AME of Pidcock, Ga.; St. John AME of Nankin, Ga.; St. Phillip AME of Quitman; and New Hope AME of Pinella County, Ga. On Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the age of 95, at 600 Old Statenville Road, God stretched out His hand to Lynn and welcomed him home, wrapping him gently in His arms and rocked him in His bosom for eternal rest. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Hankins Roberts; a daughter, Mary Frances Roberts Williams; a son, Lynn Roberts, Jr., and a grandson, Lynn Roberts III. The Rev. Roberts leaves to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Linnie E. Roberts; three daughters, Jewell R. Jones, Obildra R. Cooper, and Carrie R. McKinney, all of Valdosta; five sons, Marion C. Roberts (Willie) of Columbus, Ohio, Minister Isaac J. Roberts, Joseph B. Roberts, Dino K. Roberts (Linda), and Demetrius A. Roberts (Patricia), all of Valdosta; 50 grandchildren; 65 great- grandchildren; 100 great- great- grandchildren; a very devoted and caring granddaughter, Mary E. Wiseman; a special grandson, Lynn Leroy Jones; a caring and devoted friend, Vivian Roberts; a close neighbor and dear friend, Barbara Bell; and a numerous host of caring and devoted relatives and friends. QUITMAN — Carla Huffmaster Sykes, 40, of Quitman died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Brooks County Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Brooks County, she was the daughter of Fred and Barbara Johnson Huffmaster. She was a lab technician at Brooks County Hospital and a member of the Quitman Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, Bill Sykes of Quitman; one daughter, Ashleigh Leigh Sykes of Quitman; one son, Wes Sykes of Quitman; her parents, Fred and Barbara Huffmaster of Quitman; father-in-law, Albert L. (Sue) Sykes, Jr., of Gainesville, Ga.; mother-in-law, Susan (Billy) Donaldson of Quitman; and one sister, Carol (Tracy) Bever of Quitman. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002, in Oak Hill Cemetery with Mr. Carl Walker officiating. Rossie Jackson Tyre
Mr. Rossie Jackson Tyre, age 87, of Holiday, Fla., died Thursday, July 18, at his home following an extended illness. He was born in Jasper, Fla., and moved to Holiday from Homestead in 1984. He was a retired union carpenter and was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge No. 205, Princeton, Fla. Rossie was preceded in death by his wife in 1992, Mrs. Donnie Tyre. Survivors include three sons, Charles L. Tyre, Holiday, Fla., James D. Tyre, Homestead, Fla., and Benjamin J. Tyre, Lecanto, Fla.; one daughter, Carolyn Bagley, Elk Grove Village, Ill.; 12 grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Charlie Eugene “Gene” Castleberry, 84, of Adel passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Memorial Convalescent Center after a lengthy illness. Lissie Mae Woodard, 57, of Valdosta passed this life on July 11, 2002, at the South Georgia Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Universal Deliverance Church and Bishop Naomi McGowan will officiate. Burial will follow in the Charles Knight Cemetery.
