Clarence Baker
VALDOSTA — Clarence Baker, 65, of Valdosta died on March, 24, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on Oct. 22, 1935, in White Springs, Fla., to the late Robert Lee Baker Sr. and Georgia Mitchell Baker. He attended the public schools of Hamilton County, Fla.; was owner/operator of Baker Car Care and was a member of Greater Union Ministries Church. Mr. Baker is preceded in death by his wife, Leola Baker, three sisters, Mary McConnehead, Ruby McCray, Edna M. Baker; and three brothers, Robert Baker, Jr., Paul L. Baker, and Ronnie Baker. He is survived by one daughter, Louise Jenkins of Valdosta; one son, Pokey of Columbus; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Addie West (John), Alice Benjamin (Willie) and Georgia Corbett (Ronald), all of Valdosta; one brother and sister-in-law, Roy Baker (Lessie) of Valdosta; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Baker. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Greater Union Ministries Church with the Rev. Wade S. McCrae, Pastor officiating. Mr. Lorenzo “Lo” Guyton, Sr.
VALDOSTA — Mr. Lorenzo “Lo” Guyton, Sr. passed away March 21, 2002, at his residence, 722 John Street, Valdosta after a courageous battle with cancer. Gone is his sickness, his pain, and his sorrow. There is only joy and happiness all around him. “Lo” was born on Feb. 23, 1941, in Mitchell County (Camilla, Ga.) to the late Mr. William Guyton and Mrs. Ruby Carter-Guyton. He attended public schools in Sale City and Camilla. Lorenzo was a dedicated employee of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Valdosta where he was a certified forklift operator. He worked there from Nov. 1976 until June 2001 when his health forced him into retirement. “Lo” was the beloved husband of Gwendolyn, who was by his side at the time of his demise. He is the father of Debra Guyton, Lorenzo Guyton, Jr., and Shirley Guyton, all of Pelham, Carolyne Guyton of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Samuel of Pelham and Michael of Sale City; step father of Tracy Jackson (David) of Hinesville, Bruce Marshall, and Keith Marshall of Valdosta. “Lo” was the dear grandfather of eight and wonderful step grandfather of three. “Lo” is also survived by five sisters and two brothers, Lee Ann Oliver and Mary Mathis (Fred) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Georgia Jordan of Dallas, Texas, Ruthie Toombs and Lula Guyton of Moultrie, Willie James Guyton, Sr. (Lene) of Sale City and Nathaniel Guyton of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He has a host of relatives and friends who will miss him very much. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at All Nations Deliverance Center. The Rev. Willie E. Odessa Zanders Graham Homer
VALDOSTA — Sis. Odessa Zanders Graham Homer, 88, of Valdosta died on March 24, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on May 29, 1913, in Lowndes County to the late James and Roberta Payne Zanders. She was retired and a member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Homer is preceded in death by her husbands Jimmie B. Graham and Wilford Homer; two daughters, Bernice Graham, Ardell Graham; son, Alfred R. Graham, sister, Ozzie L.Z. Hart, brother, James Zanders, and sister-in-law, Malissie H. Zanders. She is survived by two daughters Verdell Hall and Maurice Harrell, both of Valdosta; one son, Eddie L. Graham of Valdosta; one step son, Jimmie Graham of Valdosta; 31 grandchildren, including Phyllis Nichols, Diane Bell and Ricky Allen; one special granddaughter whom she raised, Patricia Walton; 60 great- grandchildren; two great- great- grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; 30 step great- grandchildren; 22 step great- great- grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Jordan of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mildred Johnson of Valdosta; two daughters-in-law, Linda Graham of Valdosta, Betty Graham of Perry, Fla.; one son-in-law, Willie Hall of Valdosta; four sisters-in-law, Neoma Boome, Lillie Bell Rushing, Willie May Giles, Connie Lee Graham, all of Bushnell, Fla.
; four brothers-in-law, Ralph Johnson of Valdosta; Robert Graham, George Rushing, Milton Boome, all of Bushnell, Fla.; two godchildren, Frank Moore, Melissa Bradley; six devoted friends, Bernice Woods, Eula Wright, Genny Milley, Wynell Thomas, Julia McCoggle, and Ruby Williams. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. William C. Morgan, Pastor will officiate. Talmadge Kent
NASHVILLE — Talmadge Kent, 75, of Nashville died on Thursday, March 28, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on July 17, 1926, in Lanier County to Daisy Drawdy and the late William Ernest Kent. He was a retired heavy equipment operator with civil service at Moody Air Force Base, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Nashville First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Louise Mobley Kent of Nashville; two sons, Larry Kent, Tony Kent, both of Nashville; three grandchildren, Dawn Bennett, Jill Olf, Jason Kent; three great- grandchildren; and mother, Daisy Smith. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Williams and the Rev. Billy Southerland officiating. Burial will be held in Westview Cemetery. Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. today with the family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening. — Lovein Funeral Home
Mother Gladys Thomas Waters
STATENVILLE — Mother Gladys Thomas Waters was born on Aug. 4, 1921, in Fargo to the late Lawrence and Alice Thomas. She attended public school in Clinch County. Mother Waters was baptized in 1937, and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. S. Grist. Later she received the Holy Ghost and joined the church without a spot or wrinkle under the late Bishop Dave McCray. In 1957, she joined Pure Church of Righteous under the leadership of the late Bishop Moses Williams and continued her Christianly journey at Mt. Olive ODBGT, Inc. Holy Church in Statenville under the leadership of Bishop Horace Brown Sr. and Elder Horace Brown Jr., Pastor. She serviced on the Mother Board. She was united in holy matrimony in 1942 to Verge Waters, who preceded her in death; to this union eight children were born which four preceded her in death. The rose (Mother Waters) of our garden climbed up and over the hill of this world into eternity on Sunday March 24, 2002, at 11:30 a.m. at South Georgia Medical Center Hospital in Valdosta, from her loving family and friends to go home to live with her Savior. She was a devoted Christian, dedicated mother with strong leadership and an unshakable believer in Christ Jesus. She leaves to cherish her memories four daughters, Mildred Peterson, Statenville, Dorothy Stallings (Archie), Statenville, Georgie Waters, Valdosta, Gladys (Louise) Wilson (Jeremiah), Lake Park; one brother, Tommie Lee Thomas (special, devoted and loving sister-in-law, Gordie Mae), Statenville; one aunt, Haze Hodges, Tallahassee, Fla.; 15 grandchildren (special grandchildren, Rose Williams (Archie), Statenville, Demetrius Verdell (Monique), Lake Park, Kentina, Matisha, Shavisha, Kennetta, Shakirea, all of Valdosta, Laverger, Kenyarda, Alma, Shireka, Teresa, all of Lake Park, Tyree, Jabriel, Billy, all of Statenville; seven great- grandchildren; 11 God-grandchildren; one nephew, Willie Lee Thomas (Lillie), Statenville; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and many sorrowing friends. Funeral services for Ms. Ethel Hightower Grant, age 54, of Boston, Ga., will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the New Zion Holiness Church in
Boston, with Rev. Michael Hightower officiating. Burial will follow in the Boston Cemetery. Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home of Quitman, Ga., is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Ivery Marshall, 75, of Valdosta passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Holly Hill Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Payton AME Church . The Rev. Clement S. Choice, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. — Scott and Roberts Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
