Roosevelt Jackson (R.J.) Bradley
VALDOSTA — Mr. Roosevelt Jackson (R.J.) Bradley, of Valdosta, departed this life on Jan. 1, 2002, at the age of 74. He was born on Feb. 28, 1927, in Lowndes County to the late Mose “Jay” and Rebecca Miller. Mr. Bradley was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Mattie L. Bradley; two brothers, Cornelius Bradley and James Bradley, and one sister, Julia White. He leaves behind to cherish his memories a devoted son, Mr. Elbert (Mary) Bradley; a loving daughter, Mrs. Gwendolyn (Randy) Harris; five grandchildren, Kim, Shantel and Cedric Gardner, Donte’ and Kiera Bradley, all of Valdosta; one loving sister, Ms. Nellie Gaskins Johnson of Waycross; a caring aunt, Ms. Cora Gaines of Valdosta; a special friend, Mr. Otis Williams; and a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Thomas Chapel Baptist Church. Edgar Roberts is pastor. The Rev. Johnnie Straughter will officiate. Annie Mae Browning
NASHVILLE — Annie Mae Browning, 97, of Nashville (West Berrien), died on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Berrien County Hospital. She was born on Feb. 23, 1904, in Berrien County to George Newton Sutton and Callie Ann Giddens. She was a homemaker and member of Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church. She was the widow of William Jasper Browning. Mrs. Browning was also preceded in death by a son, Raymond Browning who died in 1995. She is survived by four daughters, Ethel Vickers, Gladys Carter, both of West Berrien, Vernice McNabb of Lakeland, Fla., and Geneva Harper of West Berrien; two sons, Melvin Browning and Virgil Browning, both of West Berrien; 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruby Lovett of West Berrien. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Junior Swain officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Springs Cemetery. Tony Raynard Davis
VALDOSTA — Mr. Tony Raynard Davis passed this life on Dec. 30, 2001, at South Georgia Medical Center. He resided at 3880 Fender Road, Valdosta. Mr. Davis was born on March 5, 1963, to Mrs. Uma Ree Knight and the late Mr. Eli Davis Sr. in Lowndes County. Mr. Davis became a member of Payton AME Church at an early age. Mr. Davis graduated from Lowndes High School in 1983. After high school, he was employed as a construction worker until he became disabled. He leaves to cherish his memories a loving daughter, Crystal Davis; a loving, caring and devoted mother, Mrs. Uma Ree Knight; two brothers and four sisters, Eli Davis Jr. (Roberta) of El Paso, Texas, Theresa Darden of Columbus, Tammy Brice (Tim) of Hinesville, Chree Carter and Yvonne Mitchell (Louis), both of Valdosta, also Robert Davis of Valdosta; three aunts, Annie Ruth Smith of Miami, Fla., Beatrice Wright and Mary Nell Randolph, both of Valdosta; four uncles, Gus Bradley (Darlene) of Tampa, Fla., Joe Bradley of Atlanta, John L. Bradley and Tommy Bradley (Gail), both of Valdosta; two great-aunts, Ruby Lee Whitfield and Lenora Harrell, both of Valdosta; two great-uncles, Calvin Patterson and McClary Patterson, both of Valdosta; a loving and devoted friend, Georgia Waters; special friends, James Palmer, Woodrow Clemons, Louis Mitchell, Willie Hart and Patricia Williams. He also leaves seven nephews, five nieces, two great-nephews, two great-nieces; and a host of loving cousins and friends. His grandparents were the late Daisy Patterson and Gus Bradley Sr. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Payton AME Church in Clyattville. The Rev. Philip ‘Phil’ Ethridge
VALDOSTA — Philip “Phil” Ethridge, 74, of Valdosta, passed from this life on Thursday morning, Jan. 3, 2002, at his residence after a brief illness. He
was born in Brooks County and had lived in Valdosta for most of his life. He was retired from Ethridge Plumbing Co. and the city of Valdosta as a plumbing inspector. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He loved his family as well as gardening and the outdoors. His father and mother, Ernest and Frances Ethridge, preceded him in death. He was Baptist by faith. Survivors include his devoted wife for more than 53 years, Willie Blue Ethridge of Valdosta; one son, Gary Ethridge Sr. of Valdosta; one daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Jerry Hutchinson of Valdosta; grandchildren, Gary Ethridge Jr., Keri Ethridge, Beau Hutchinson and Megan Hutchinson; stepgranddaughter, Renee Webb; sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Harold Tyner of Quitman; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Paulette Blue of Lake Park. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services with burial following in Riverview Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Jim Schappaugh will officiate. Olney Barnhill Parker
HOMERVILLE — Mrs. Olney Barnhill Parker, 97, of Homerville passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the Tallahassee Community Hospital, Tallahassee, Fla., following an extended illness. A native of Clinch County, she had lived here all her life before moving to Tallahassee about three years ago. She was a homemaker, member of the Homerville Woman’s Club and the Homerville First Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late John Franklin Barnhill and Sula Johnson Barnhill and was the widow of Frances Marion Parker. Survivors are one daughter, Bettye McLemore, Tallahassee; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several other relatives. Funeral services for Mrs. Parker will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Homerville First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pine Forest Cemetery. Doris Robinson Schultz
VALDOSTA — Doris Robinson Schultz, 93, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at her residence after a lengthy illness. Born in Jacksonville, Fla., to the late John S. and Florence Lytle Robinson, she had been a resident of Valdosta for the past 21 years. Mrs. Schultz was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Jan Singleton and Walton Carter of Valdosta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Raleigh Travers Green III and his wife Norah Anne Green of Ft. Worth, Texas, William Lytle and Sarah Schultz of Melbourne, Fla.; grandchildren, Len and Melissa Carter, Trav and Judy Carter, Robin Coleman and her husband Richard, Joe and Paige Carter, Raleigh IV and Anne Green, Robin Green, Lisa and Mark Neupauer, Carter and Shannon Schultz; great-grandchildren, Dori and Aldine Carter, Ben and Elizabeth Carter, Rick and Carter Coleman, Ashley, Katie and Raleigh Green V, Grace and Hayley Green, Sophie Neupauer and Carleigh Schultz; one stepdaughter, Farah and Gene Edwards. Mrs. Schultz was preceded in death by her husbands, Joseph James Singleton and Bernard Jerome Schultz, and one grandson, Thomas Bernard Carter. Services for Mrs. Doris Robinson Schultz will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Peter Ingeman officiating. Andrew Ragan Scaff
JENNINGS, Fla. — Andrew Ragan Scaff, 20, of Jennings, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Andrew was born in Valdosta and was a lifelong resident of Hamilton County. He was a 1999 graduate of Hamilton County High School and was a student at North Florida Community College. VALDOSTA — Sharn A. Tucker, 36, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center of a long-term illness. He was born on May 5, 1966 in Valdosta to the late Ruthie Mae Tucker and surviving Benjamin Hancock. He was a man of many talents. He is survived by a daughter, Courtney Nicole Patrick of Valdosta; a very devoted friend, Karrie Kyer; one sister, Mary Ann Stalvey; and three brothers of Valdosta, Hardy B. Stanley, Benjamin and Leon, one in California, Billy; and two brothers passed on, Johnnie and Carl; two half sisters, Denise and Scrella of Valdosta; Janice was also a half sister who has left us; a host of nieces and nephews; three devoted friends, Jerry, Alfred and Vickie. VALDOSTA — Mrs. Emily Marie Allen Varn, 99, of Valdosta, died on Jan. 2, 2002, at her residence. She was born on Feb. 8, 1902, in Cook County to the late Hansel Wilson and Katie Berry Hill Allen. She lived most of her life in Valdosta. She was a retired elementary school teacher and member of Lee Street Baptist Church, Valdosta. She was preceded in death by her husband, James “J.E.” Edmondson Varn; six brothers and five sisters. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Emily Sue and Eugene Pitts of Valdosta; grandchildren, James and Jenny Pitts of Hahira, Joel Pitts of Valdosta; great-granddaughter, Jordan Pitts of Hahira; and several nieces and nephews. She was a housewife and of the Pentecostal faith.
