NOT GUILTY: Dr. Jason Nolan Cox was found not guilty of the charges he faced, as reported by the Valdosta Daily Times Feb. 28, 2008.

VALDOSTA — Bond was set Monday for a family practitioner making his first court appearance on an aggravated battery charge.

The $100,000 bond that released Dr. Jason Cox, 35, from the Lowndes County Jail came with restrictions stipulated by Judge Joni Parker in Magistrate Court of Lowndes County.

The felony charge against Cox stems from a June 20 incident in which the doctor is accused of assaulting his wife at their former residence in Valdosta.

Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Cox Friday night at his parents’ home on the aggravated battery charge.

Cox had been freed on bond Friday in Adel after being charged Dec. 8 with cruelty to children in a felony warrant. A written statement by Adel police said Cox had inflicted injuries on his 2-year-old daughter from 9:30 p.m. Dec. 7 to 12:30 a.m. Dec. 8.

A condition of his bond is that Cox must have no contact with his wife or three children, Parker said.

Further conditions of his bond are that Cox must surrender his passport and not leave the state. He may not possess any firearms and must surrender the guns he owns to the Sheriff’s Office.

Cox said his firearms are in a safe at his father’s residence in Valdosta. “I couldn’t get to them anyway,” he said.

For safety reasons, Parker said arrangements needed to be made for turning the guns over to the Sheriff’s Office. Parker also ordered Cox to attend domestic violence counseling once per week. The Magistrate Court judge said she would leave it to Cox’s attorney, Jim Tunison, to handle the details.

Cox’s bond will be handled through a professional bailbondsman, Parker said. No property transaction will be allowed.

“Why is that, ma’am?” Cox asked.

Parker explained that Cox’s father had already put up property for his son’s bond on the charge against him in Cook County. Also, the judge said she believes Cox poses some flight risk.

Cox’s current practice is in Adel. His family practice includes newborn care through nursing home care, as well as sports medicine, obstetrics and workmen’s compensation.
