Hamilton edges Trenton in extras

In Trenton, Fla., Hamilton County needed a three-run home run from Austin Gaver in the top of the 10th inning to pull out a 5-1 win over Trenton Friday, the Trojans’ sixth straight victim.
Danield Deas (3-1) picked up the win after going nine innings, holding onto a shutout until the seventh. Trenton’s Kyle Layfield was tagged with the loss despite lasting 9 2-3 innings.
Hamilton scored a run in the first on Jamie Garcia’s RBI single that scored Pablo Garcia (4-for-5, double), but that would be the Trojans only run until the 10th inning.
Hamilton is not 10-4 overall, 6-1 in district play.
Valwood Middle girls down VHS
In Valdosta, Valwood Middle School’s girls defeated Valdosta Middle 2-1 Friday. Valdosta went ahead with an early goal, but the Valiants got a goal from Courtney Sayre and the game-winner from Lindsay Megow, assisted by Sayre, in the second half. The Lady Valiants (2-2-1) hosts Hahira Middle Monday at 4 p.m.
Valwood and Valdosta Middle’s boys tied 2-2. Valen Lopez’s goal, assisted by Stephen Olsen, tied the game at 1-all before halftime. Trailing 2-1, Lopez scored again late in the second half to tie the game. The Valiants (0-2-2) host Hahira Middle at 5 p.m. Monday.
Eagles’ soccer on a roll
In Valdosta, St. John’s soccer swept Valwood Wednesday, 2-0 in the girls’ game and 3-1 in the boys’ game.
St. John’s Anna Leigh Powell scored on a Lilliana Chachere assist to open the girls’ scoring and then Reanne Harris added another goal on an assist from Ceighley Cribb in the second half. Cribb and Alison Hemmelgarn combined in goal for the shutout. The Lady Valiants fell to 1-2-1 despite a solid effort in net from goalkeeper Ashley Watkins.
In the boys’ game, St. John got goals from Patrick Stevens and Enrique Seiz as well as an own-goal off a Valwood player. All three assists were credited to Oscar Obregon. Chris Hilgert got the shutout in goal. The Valiants (0-2-1) got an early goal from Stephen Olson on an assist from Valen Lopez.
In a co-ed match Monday, St. John defeated Georgia Christian 8-0 with goals from Stevens, Joseph Morgan, Hilgert, Stephens Griner, Zach Wang, Harris and Obregon, who scored twice. Rotating in goal for the shutout were Sully Pollard, Steven Cooke, Morgan and Hemmelgarn.
