The Lowndes boys tennis team wrapped up an undefeated season on Friday with a 5-0 victory at Tift County. The Vikings (18-0) can relax for two weeks now since their 10-0 region record earned them a bye straight through to the state playoffs. However, most of the Vikings will be in action today in Albany in a USTA tournament.

It was another shutout on Friday, with only No. 2 Matt Odom losing a set. He rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the second set for a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory, while his brother Andrew bested his opponent 6-1, 6-2. Top seed Mike Millner thwarted Tift thanks to a 6-2, 6-0 win. No. 1 doubles team Dane Boruff and Andrew Smith (6-4, 6-1) and No. 2 combo Ben Galloway and Clayton Griffin (6-2, 6-2) each won decisively, and the Vikings cleaned out with junior varsity wins from Perry Pulido (8-3) and the doubles pair of Chris Shipman and Eli Rountree (6-2, 6-2).

The Vikettes posted a 3-2 victory against the Blue Devils with a singles sweep and now must wait until the coaches’ meeting on Thursday to learn their fate in the region tournament. Lowndes (8-10) should wind up third or fourth due to its 5-5 mark in Region 1-AAAAA when the tourney starts later that day at ABAC. On Friday, Lacey Hansen won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, while Alison Keener rebounded from a first-set defeat to triumph 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. No. 2 Tayler Jarvis made it 10 straight wins with a 6-0, 6-4 win.

Lowndes girls soccer defeats Coffee

In Valdosta, Lowndes High’s girls soccer team defeated Coffee 2-0 Friday at Martin Stadium. The win clinched a playoff berth for the Vikettes, who will likely be the third seed out of Region 1-AAAAA.

The game was scoreless at halftime. But in the 63rd minute, Amanda Stankiewicz’s corner kick turned into a perfect shot, curving into the net to give the Vikettes a 1-0 lead. Samantha McCoy all but sealed the victory in the 79th minute, scoring off a direct kick.

Lowndes travels to Coffee on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs took an early 4-0 lead, saw Seminole come back to tie the score at 4-4 and go up 9-7 in the sixth. Lanier tied it at 9-9 in the sixth. The Bulldogs then won in the eighth, with Sylvester West scoring on Milton Glouster’s 2-out bloop single to left.

For the Bulldogs, Ryan White was 3-for-4, B.J. Lucky scored three runs, Derek White was 2-for-5 with three runs, and Ryan Allen was 2-for-3 and drove in four runs.

Valwood soccer tops Tiftarea

After knocking off region unbeaten Terrell on Thursday, the Valwood girls soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory Friday at Tiftarea.

Teresa Gorman tied the score with a goal, off an assist from Jessica Marquardt. Then Katie Austin scored the game-winner for the Valiants (4-8-1, 3-2 in region).

The Lady Valiants were outshot 8-1 in the first 40 minutes, but held Tiftarea without a shot the rest of the way.

GCS falls in region standings

A 9-3 loss to Terrell on Friday dropped the Georgia Christian baseball team into a three-way tie for second in the region. The Generals can move up with a win Tuesday at home against Randolph Southern, which is tied with GCS and Terrell.

The big inning crushed the Generals on Friday. Terrell scored eight runs in the third, thanks in large part to five errors. Dustin Jeffords came on in relief in the fourth and tossed a shutout the rest of the way, but GCS couldn’t rally.
