CECIL — Jet dragsters lit up the south Georgia night Saturday at South Georgia Motorspeedway Park, which saw four of the fastest National Hot Rod Association cars in the nation.
Watkinsville native Paul Miller walked away with the Jet Car trophy, beating Elaine Larsen in the final. Miller, who ran a 299 mile per hour qualifying lap Friday, recorded a run of 291 mph (5.76 seconds) to outrun Larsen.
“I’m glad everybody enjoyed it,” Miller said. “I just want Elaine to know we’re very proud of her and she did a great job.”
Larsen turned a 6.15 second (258 mph) lap down the quarter-mile drag strip to place second.
“This is a great place to race,” said Larsen, who is from Haines City, Fla.
Larry McDuffie, a former NHRA Division II racer of the year, won the Super Pro series over Victor Vickers with a 6.72 second (100 mph) lap, .01 seconds off his 6.71 dial-in. Vickers had a faster run, 5.28 seconds (131 mph), but was .02 seconds off his 5.26 dial-in.
“When you look up the word good, his picture is next to it,” SGMP speedway manager Tim Pafford said of McDuffie.
McDuffie, from Douglas, took home a $1,500 prize by beating Vickers, who is also from Douglas.
“We’ll get the old man to buy us something to eat on the way home tonight,” Vickers said of McDuffie.
In the Pro series finale, John Rollins took home the title when Nashville native Kenny Stone’s 1988 351cc Mustang jumped the gun on the start and was disqualified. Rollins, who resembles anything but a race car drive, turned a 7.09 second (96 mph) lap down the 1/8 of a mile drag strip in his 1972 Chevy 388cc Nova
“The glasses throw everybody off,” said Rollins, who is from Newberry, Fla. “All I have to do is drive. (My crew) preps the car and it goes fast. All I have to do is go straight.”
Ten-year-old Bobby Mouat, from Ty Ty, won the junior dragster final beating Zach Mentzer of Jacksonville, Fla., with a 9.29 second (47.17 mph) run. Bobby’s sister, Morgan Mouat, placed third in the junior dragster’s series.
SGMP will take next weekend off for Mother’s Day, but will test-tune on Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The track will test-tune again May 14 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. and host the Pro Outlaw and NHRA Funny Cars May 15.
The NHRA event will open at 11 a.m. with racing beginning at 6 p.m.
According to park developer Larry Dean, SGMP is in the process of installing handicap parking and seating set to be completed next weekend.
