Edith Cooper

LAKELAND — Edith Cooper, 89, of Lakeland, passed away Monday morning, July 26, 2004, at her daughter’s residence following a lengthy illness. She was born in Clay City, Ill., and had lived in Miami, Fla., most of her life before moving to Lakeland in February 2004, to be close to her daughter. She enjoyed crafting and participating in craft shows.

Survivors include her husband of 73 years, Delbert Cooper of Cherry Lake, Fla.; two daughters, Virginia (Lloyd) Barrow, Lakeland, Ga., Jeannie (George) Steele, Seymour, Tenn.; two grandsons, John (Kathy) Barrow, Davie, Fla.,Gene Steele, Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchild, Mindy (Dan) Sportsman, Raleigh, N.C.

Graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Cherry Lake Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherry Lake, Fla.

Jesse Griffin

HAHIRA — Jesse Griffin, 78, of Hahira died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Smith Northview Hospital. He was born on July 14, 1926, in Douglas to the late Jesse and Winnie Carter Griffin and had lived in Hahira for many years. Mr. Griffin was retired from the Lowndes County Board of Education as the Food Services Director and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Hahira United Methodist Church, The American Legion, the Hahira Masonic Lodge and former Hahira City councilman.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Charles and Pam Griffin, Tommy and Pam Griffin; two grandchildren, Neil Griffin and Blake Griffin; two great-grandchildren, Katie Griffin and Trey Griffin, all of Hahira; one sister, Dorothy Hicks; one brother and sister-in-law, Lamar and Ann Griffin, all of Adel; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Barfield Griffin.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in the chapel of Martin/McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Lynn Hurley and the Rev. John McGowan officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Hastin Ray ‘Curly’ Marchman

QUITMAN — Hastin Ray “Curly” Marchman, 76, of Quitman died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Archbold Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Heard County and was the son of Joseph Manuel and Evie Yearta Marchman. He was a retired switchman for GTE and a member of the Quitman Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Donna Raye (Reed) Batts of Quitman; five grandchildren, Treena Marchman, Amos Coy Batts, Paul Jacob Batts, Tessa Re’ Mattson, Reeda Cloud Batts; and one great-grandchild, Blake Mattson; four sisters, Chloca Herndon of Jonesboro, Sylvia Orr and Frances Hyde both of Newnan, Carol Gustafson of Jacksonville, Fla.; and one brother, Joe Marchman of Atlanta. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert “Randy” Randall Marchman; brothers, Harold Marchman and Hubert Marchman.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 29, 2004, in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Herndon officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Jeanette Marchman. — Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home, Quitman



Herman O. (Johnny) Miller

VALDOSTA — Herman O. (Johnny) Miller, 69, of Valdosta, died on Sunday, July 25, 2004, after a short illness. Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., on June 13, 1935, Mr. Miller was the son of the late Sam and Winifred Miller. He had served in the U.S. Air Force for 28 years and was associated with Valdosta Mall Security for five years following his military retirement. Mr. Miller was a Baptist.

Survivors are his wife, Grace of Valdosta; daughter and son-in-law, Tina M. and J.R. Riggins of Valdosta; son, John K. Miller of Denver, Colo.; grandchild, Owen Thomas Riggins of Valdosta; sister and brother-in-law, Naomi and Virgil Thomason of Chattanooga, Tenn. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Butch Miller, Charlie Miller, Betty Harris and Peggy Miller.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with entombment and military honors in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The Rev. A. Loren H. Odom

HAHIRA — Loren H. Odom, 62, of Hahira died July 24, 2004, suddenly at his residence.

He was born on May 18, 1942, in Turner County to the late Ernest Harward and Nannie Mae Shiver Odom and lived in Cook County for the past 17 years. He was assistant superintendent for Flournoy Construction Co. and a member of Salem Baptist Church-Red Rock Community in Worth County.

He is survived by his wife, “Debbie” Debra Jean Tyson Odom of Hahira; one son, Jamey Odom, Sylvester; two daughters, Donna Pope, Sumner, Tammy Britt, Sylvester; two stepdaughters, Deidra Drawdy, Nashville, Sharon Drawdy Daiz, Stockbridge, Ga.; three grandchildren; and one brother, Bobby Odom of Baconton, Ga.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Powell officiating. Burial will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. E. Muriel Zinkand Sinnott

VALDOSTA — E. Muriel Zinkand Sinnott, 95, of Valdosta passed away Saturday, July 24, 2004, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 25, 1908, to the late Joseph N. and Maria T. Nissen Zinkand. She was a New York University Alumna, a retired New York City High School teacher and a member of the St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. Mrs. Sinnott was an honorary member of the Alpha Kappa Delta, Business and Professional Women’s Club Inc., former president of American Assn. of University Women and former President Residents’ Association, Presbyterian Nursing Home, Quitman, Ga. She held a Student Pilot Certificate and was a member of the Women Flyers of America.

Survivors include her son, John and Rose Marie of Valdosta; grandchildren, Dr. James A. Sinnott, Jessica M. Sinnott; great-grandchildren, Jeannette, T.J., John, Nicole, Alexander Sinnott.

Betty Young Vickers

HAHIRA — Betty Young Vickers, 72, of Hahira, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was born on June 15, 1932, in Adel to the late John and Bessie Massey Young and had lived in Hahira for many years. Mrs. Vickers was retired from Commercial Banking Company and a member of the Salem Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, whom she married on Dec. 12, 1948, Thomas Drew Vickers of Hahira; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Janet Vickers of Hahira; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Vickers Clanton and LeRoy Clanton Jr. of Hahira; grandchildren and their spouses, Jason Vickers of Hahira, Holly Vickers of Valdosta, Wendy and Dean Failor of Istanbul, Turkey, Tisha and Robert Jones of Albany, Lee and Samantha Clanton of Morven, and Katie Clanton Gordon and Derek Gordon of Hahira; great-grandchildren, Ben and Katie Failor of Istanbul, Turkey, Tyler Clanton of Morven, and Dylan Gordon of Hahira; special niece, Quida Register of Albany; brother-in-law, Dutch Braddock of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Jo Young of Tallahassee, Fla., Venice Young Roberts and L. J. Roberts of Albany, Nellie V. Parker of Hahira, Linnie V. Parker of Hahira, Laquita Vickers of Hahira, Treva Vickers of Hahira, and Betty V. Griffis of Warner Robins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Myrtice Register, Nell Jeffers, Mildred Lawrence, and Gladys Braddock; two brothers, Ben Young and James Young; her parents-in-law, Henry Drew and Pauline Webb Vickers; and five brothers-in-law, Paul Vickers, Jimmy Vickers, Brinson Parker, Eugene Parker, and Bill Griffis.

William L. Wagner

PINETTA, Fla. — William L. Wagner, CPO USN RET, 78, of Pinetta, Fla., died on Monday, July 26, 2004, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Born on March 5, 1926, in Evesham Township, N.J., he was the son of the late Joseph and Goldie McGowan Wagner. Mr. Wagner served during WWII and the Korean War. After 20 years of service in the U.S. Navy, he retired and started farming.

Survivors include his wife, Emmie Adams Wagner, Pinetta, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Ann Carol and Benny Smith, Pinetta, Fla.; grandchildren and their spouses, James T. and Sharon Smith and Wayne R. and Lisa Smith, all of Lake Park, Ga.; and great grandchildren, Rebecca, Jessica, William, Celia and Alisha Smith.

Graveside funeral services will be held on today, July 27, 2004, at 2 p.m. in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Akers officiating. Mr. Wagner will receive full military honors at the cemetery. — Carson McLane Funeral Home



Mary Lee Burnett Cardin Windham

VALDOSTA — Mary Lee Burnett Cardin Windham, 61, of Valdosta, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Heritage House after a lengthy illness.

Born in Chickasha, Okla., she was the daughter of Edward Quin Russell and Helen Johnston Salter Burnett. She was self-employed in the embroidery business and was a member of New Canaan Baptist Church in Suwannee. She had been a resident of Brooks County from 1962 to 1984. Mrs. Windham moved to Atlanta and returned to Valdosta in 2004.

She is survived by one daughter, Tracy LeWayne Cardin (Vance) Thomas of Valdosta; two sons, Charles Derrick Ty Cardin of Hawkinsville and Petty Officer First Class Dwayne JoCarl Cardin of Virginia Beach, Va.; a stepdaughter, Stacey Windham (Mike) Poole; a stepson, Gary Barnard (Bobbi) Windham; one sister, Deborah Ann Burnett (John) Conroy of Anchorage, Alaska; and seven grandchildren, Jarrod Benjamin Thomas, Matthew Brett Thomas, Diamond Johnston Cardin, Charles Edward Cardin, Marissa Jewell Cardin, Sarah Frances Windham, and Katherine Anne Windham.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in the Maxwell-Miller Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. this evening.
