Janie Barker
VALDOSTA — Janie Barker, 89, of Valdosta, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004 at Presbyterian Home in Quitman. She was born on March 2, 1914 in Bedford, Va. to the late Jake and Fannie Pearl Parker Karnes. Mrs. Barker was a homemaker and a member of Forrest Park Church of Christ.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Nina Barker of Cross Creek, Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Gray of Valdosta; six grandchildren, Mark Russell Gray, Marchelle Sullivan, David Franklin Gray, Shawn Barker, Shannon Pierce and Danny Gaskins; seven great-grandchildren, T.J. Lumpkin, Eric Lumpkin, Victoria Sullivan, Amanda Williams, Andrea Gray, Amber Gray, Tyler Gray, Wayne Gaskins, Leigh Ann Gaskins and Eric Gaskins; four sisters, Doris Martin of Concord, N.C., Katheryn Parrish of Charlotte, N.C., Virginia Martin and Nell Miller of Bedford, Va.; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Barker is predeceased by her husband, Horace Barker and son, Homer Gray.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Burial will be held in Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. — Carson Funeral Home
Mattie Deen Boyett
Mattie Deen Boyett, 98, of Bonaire, Ga., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004. She was born in Ware County to the late George T. and Bessie King Deen. Mrs. Boyett had lived in Lanier County most of her life. She was the oldest member of the First Baptist Church of Ray City, was also a member of Easter Star and served on the DFACS board of Lanier County for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Boyett, daughter and son-in-law, Dot and Charles Howell, sons-in-law, John Sears, Paul Smith and Lesley Davidson and granddaughter, Susan Elaine Sears.
Survivors include her children, Doris Sears, Atlanta, Ga., Irene Smith, Gaithersburg, Md., Louise Davidson, Bonaire, Ga., and Earl and Rhea Boyett, Lakeland, Ga.; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held locally at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, in the First Baptist Church in Ray City, with burial following in Beaver Dam Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Heritage Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. tonight with the Boyett family receiving friends locally at Music Funeral Services, Lakeland 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004.

Herbert (Mac) McIntosh
Herbert (Mac) McIntosh, 83, of Pelham, Ala., formerly of Valdosta, died on Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at Lakeshore Transition Unit in Birmingham, Ala., after a brief illness. Born on July 2, 1920, he was the son of the late Herbert McGregor Sr. and Annie Brogden McIntosh. Mr. McIntosh was a veteran of the United States Armed Forces and a member of Northside Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Touchton McIntosh; son and daughter-in-law, Daryl and Cynthia McIntosh of Pelham, Ala.; grandchildren, Brian McIntosh, Kristen McIntosh, both of Pelham, Scott and Kristy McIntosh of Valdosta, Mark McIntosh of Knoxville, Tenn., Stewart and Lori McIntosh of Valdosta; great grandchildren, Morgan McIntosh, Luke McIntosh, Tyler McIntosh, Crystal McIntosh, Davis McIntosh and a half brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Nancy McIntosh of Sioux City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by a son, Maj. Lyn Davis McIntosh.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in the Chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Reddick and Reverend Bob Willis officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. L.A. “Stick” Nelson
NASHVILLE — Deacon L. A. “Stick” Nelson, 98, of Nashville departed this life Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Berrien County Hospital in Nashville, Ga. after an extended illness. He was born on Feb. 26, 1905 in Thomas County to parentage of the late Jerry and Gussie Nelson. He was a member and deacon of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Nashville.
Mr. Nelson leaves to mourn his passing his wife Bertha Nelson, Nashville; three sons, Will (Wilma) Evans of Orangeburg, S.C., Claude (Barbara) Hobbs, St. Petersburg, Fla., E.L. (Dorene) Nelson, Andalusia, Ala.; four daughters, Bertha (Thomas) Kleinclaus, St. Petersburg, Fla., Alice Poole, Clara (Curtis) Green, and Pearline Daniels, all of Nashville; one Godson, Donald Burton of Deland, Fla.; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Rev. Steve (Eula) Thomas, St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Clara Jones, Moultrie and Lettie Moore of St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg, Fla.; also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many sorrowing friends.
The family will receive family and friends from 6-7 p.m. this evening. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at New Bethel Baptist Church in Nashville, the Rev. Zora Bell Roland
WEST BERRIEN– Zora Bell Roland, 79, of West Berrien died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Fellowship Home.
She was born on Nov. 3, 1914, in Berrien County to Gorden and Rosetta Rowan Hesters. She was a homemaker and attended the Nashville Mission. She was the widow of William Henry Roland who died in 2001. They were married for 71 years. She had a long and happy life and was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, aunt and a very dear friend to many.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Lamar Royal of Tifton, Coretha and Gary Bennett, Douglas; two sons and daughters-in-law, W.H. Jr. and Dottie Roland, Augusta, George and Gail Roland, Adel; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Rev. Fred Hesters of Nashville. She is preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle Conger and Angie Taylor.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Nashville Mission with the Rev. Clarence Luke, the Rev. Brad Royal, the Rev. Olem Bennett, and Mr. Chad Roland officiating. Funeral services for Mrs. Frankie Mae Brinson, age 75, of Quitman will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at the Beulah Baptist Church in Quitman with Elder Charles Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Brinson Cemetery in Quitman. The family will receive friends between the hours of 6-7 p.m. at the Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home Chapel in Quitman. Willie “Bill” Jones Jr., age 60, formerly of Quitman, passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, in Houston, Texas.

Susie B. Shaw, age 92, of Quitman passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, Ga.

Pauline Edward Stokes, age 90, of Quitman passed away Tuesday,, Jan. 13, 2004, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, Ga.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Brooks County with the Rev. Rodney Ervin, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Morning Star Cemetery. Washington Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Funeral services for Mr. George Thomas Jr., age 55, of Valdosta will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Church of God in Unity in Quitman with Pastor Thomas Pomfrey officiating.
