James Lamar

‘Red’ Alday

VALDOSTA — James Lamar “Red” Alday, 75, forty-year resident of Valdosta, died Friday, August 1, 2003 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born on April 13, 1928 to the late Cecil and Bedia Odom Alday in Donalsonville. Mr. Alday was a retired trainman with the Norfolk Southern Railroad, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Eastern Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Collins Alday of Valdosta; his sister, Mary Lula McCombs of Jennings, La.; his sister-in-law, Lenora Alday of Daytona Beach, Fla., and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Bedia Alday, his sister, Francis Belden and two brother, C.E. (Ed) Alday and Cecil Alday Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2003 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Skip VanNus and Rev. Mike Broadwater officiating. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held this afternoon from 4 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice of South Georgia, P.O. Box 1727 Valdosta, Ga., 31603-9972. Martha O. Baker

MALVERN, Ark. — Martha O. Baker, 75, Fernandino Shores, wife of James E. “Jim” Baker for more than 65 years, passed away Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at her residence. A native of Malvern, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Carl Waldemar Strauss and Alice Pershing Strauss, and had resided on Amelia Island since 1988, when she and her husband relocated from Valdosta. Mrs. Baker was a homemaker and a very active member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandino Beach. She volunteered in many organizations in the community. Mrs. Baker held the First Amelia Island Quilt Show and was very active in the Amelia Island Museum of History, and was a docent of the Children’s Tours at the museum. Mrs. Baker was an “ambassador” of the museum and led tours which taught the history of the island. She established the Gift Shop at the museum, which was staffed by volunteers. The History Room at the Amelia Island Museum of History is dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Baker in honor of their service to that organization. She also helped with starting the first Tour of Homes in Fernandino Beach, and that event has now become a very popular attraction to the island. Mrs. Baker worked and taught classes at the Classy Needle on Centre Street. She started the Circle of Friends Sewing Club at Fernandino Shores, where she resided. She served on the Board of Directors at Fernandino Shores and formerly at Amelia-By-The-Sea. Mrs. Baker created and donated a beautiful quilt for the Memorial United Methodist Church, which was auctioned off, and whose proceeds from the auction netted the church more than $1,000. She also made the stole which is part of the vestments, which are worn by Rev. Bruce T. Jones, pastor of Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors, besides her husband, include her children, James E. (Linda) Baker Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Clifford Pierce (Barbara) Baker, Milledgeville, Ga., Mark Lee (Betsy) Baker, Hilton Head, S.C., and Alice Louise (Andrew) Morgan, Redlands, Calif.; a sister, Louise Strauss Watts, Fernandino Beach; a brother, Carl W. Strauss, Corpus Christi, Texas; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. A memorial service is to be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. James F. Beddow

NASHVILLE — James F. Beddow, 78, of Nashville, passed away Saturday morning August 2, 2003 in Clinch Health Care Center following a lengthy illness. He was born in Heidrick, Ky., and had lived in Nashville since 1992 coming from Barberville, Ky. He served in the United States Navy. He was Pentecostal by faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Beddow, son, James Allen, grandson, Matthew Troupe.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Beddow and Carolyn Troupe of Nashville; one son, Jerry Baker of Corbin, Ky.; grandchildren, Jerry, Sherry, Jared and Kayla; two sisters, Blanche Gamble and Doris Limming of Heidrick, Ky.; two brothers Marvin Beddow of Hillsboro, Ohio and Harold Beddow of Hamilton, Ohio, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2003 in the Lakeland Chapel of Music Funeral Services with burial following in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Atkinson County.

Charlie Nelson Lester ‘Santa’ Hicks

LAKELAND — Mr. Charlie Nelson Lester “Santa” Hicks, 54, passed away Friday, August 1, 2003 in the South Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.

A native of Harbee County, Florida, he had lived in Lakeland for the last 15 years. He was a member of the DuPont Full Gospel Mission and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a maintenance worker for the Valdosta Mall before his health forced his retirement. He was the son of the late Lester Hicks and Rachel Mae Douglas.

Survivors are his wife, Pauline Horne Hicks, of Lakeland; one son, Gerald Horne, of Washington State; one sister, Jackie Thompson, Pelham; one brother, Jimmy Tew, of Homerville and several other relatives.

Services for Mr. Hicks will be held Monday, August 4, 2003 at 11 a.m. from the DuPont Full Gospel Mission. Interment will be in the North Cemetery near DuPont. Mr. Hicks will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Roundtree Funeral Home of Homerville is serving the Hicks Family. — Roundtree Funeral Home



Charles Edgar Cox

Charles Edgar Cox, 87, of Valdosta, formerly of Centerville, Indiana, died on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2203 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2003 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Willis officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.
