Martha Barker

ADEL — Martha Barker, 84, of Adel died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at her residence. She was born Jan. 16, 1919, in Cook County to the late Marvin Franklin Murphy and Vera Tyson Murphy. Mrs. Barker lived in Cook County all her life. She was a member of Community Calvary Holiness Church and was retired from Talley Corbett where she worked for 27 years. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Melba Barker of Valdosta and Wayne and Michele Barker of Columbus; four daughters and sons-in-law, Annette Pettyjohn of Adel, Janice and Buddy Lasseter of Thomasville, Joleta and Gene Atkinson of Adel, and Barbara and John Ray of Adel; one brother, Herman Murphy of Adel; two sisters, Vera Nell Morrison of Adel and Carolyn McGee of Nashville; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Austin Barker; one brother, Marvin Murphy Jr., one granddaughter, Tracy Barker; and one great-grandson, Thomas Barker.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Community Calvary Holiness Church with the Rev. Daniel Dean, the Rev. Raiford Walker and the Rev. Charles Horne officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends today from 7-9 p.m. at Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home, Hwy. 41 South. — Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home



Eugene Morehead Eager Sr.

ALBANY — Eugene Morehead Eager Sr., 78, of Albany, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003.

His funeral service will be today at 11 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. William D. (Biff) Coker, the Rev. Ben Mathis and the Rev. Tim Olds will officiate. Interment will be private in Crown Hill Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 6, 1925, to the late William G. Eager and Eugene Johnston Eager. Mr. Eager was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where he had served as deacon and elder.

He was a graduate of Webb School, Bell Buckle, Tenn., and was a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology. While at Georgia Tech, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and served in the Naval ROTC program. Mr. Eager served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Hunter Marshall, an all-purpose Destroyer until March 1946. He then transferred to the Inactive Reserve as a Lt. J.G.

Mr. Eager moved from Valdosta to Albany in 1972, to become a financial consultant with Robinson-Humphrey Co., Inc. He retired in 1994 as vice president. He was a past president of the Dougherty Kiwanis Club, a member of Doublegate Country Club. He served as Chairman of Fund Raising for the Thronateeska Heritage Foundation, the Heart Association, and was a director for the Salvation Army.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Andrews Eager, Albany; three daughters, Karen A. Eager, Atlanta, Rebekah E. Daniel, Gainesville, Ga., Virginia E. Smith and her husband Barrett, Thomson, Ga.; a son, Eugene M. Eager Jr. “Tim” and his wife Terri, Destin, Fla.; grandchildren, Emil L. Girardin Jr. and his wife Marci, Kameran Girardin, Jon Eager Daniel, Cristen Daniel, Martha Daniel, Rett Smith, Evans Smith, Hunter Morehead Eager, Holly Eager; stepgrandchildren, Ashley Jackson, Courtney Jackson, Buck Jackson; a great-grandson, Emil Girardin III; a brother, George B. Eager, Valdosta; a sister, Laura E. Newman, Gainesville, Fla.

Gladys Faulkner

NASHVILLE — Gladys Faulkner, 79, of Nashville died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 23, 1924, in Chesterfield County, S.C., to Elijah Benjamin and Cora Ellen Ursher Thomas. She was a homemaker and attended the Nashville Mission.

She is survived by her husband, Sly Faulkner of Nashville; two stepdaughters, Peggy Kent of Nashville, Gloria Jean Belford of Valdosta; one stepson, Wayne Faulkner of Nashville; five stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in Flat Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Clarence Luke officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 9 a.m. until the hour of service. — Lovein Funeral Home, Nashville



Virginia Rudd Lanier

FARGO — Virginia Rudd Lanier, 72 of Fargo, was reunited with her beloved “Hoss” on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003. She was born on Oct. 28, 1930, in Madison County, Fla., to the late Ira W. and Mary Holt Rudd. Mrs. Lanier was a local author. She had just finished her sixth book entitled “A Bloodhound to Die for.” All of her books were about our local area. They were about bloodhounds and full of excitement, turmoil and mystery. She was a member of the American Bloodhound Club and Sisters in Crime. Virginia was a lot like the feisty, fiery, sassy, opinionated character featured in her books, Jo Beth. She touched a lot of lives through her writing and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by one son, Michael Stewart; three stepsons, Leslie Elvin Lanier, Quinn Eugene Lanier, Rex Warren Lanier; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; special friends, Lisa and Wayne Padgett, Hal Carter and many other friends and devoted fans. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. “Hoss” Lanier.

Mrs. Lanier will be cremated without any services according to her wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Odyssey Health Care of Valdosta or the charity of your choice. — Carson McLane Funeral Home



Minnie Louise Carmichael Steadman

SAVANNAH — Minnie Louise Carmichael Steadman, 89, of Savannah, widow of Chester C. Steadman, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 28, 2003, at the home of her daughter.

Born in Savannah, she was a daughter of the late Edward Harlee Carmichael and Minnie Louise Murphy Carmichael. Mrs. Steadman was a life member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a long-time member of the PEO Sisterhood. Mrs. Steadman was a loving mother and a homemaker. She attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music and was an accomplished pianist who taught piano in earlier years.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Deanne S. and Cletus W. Bergen II of Savannah; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Gayle and Jackie Huber Steadman of Atlanta; three grandsons, Christopher W. Bergen of Superior, Colo., Matthew C. Bergen of Savannah, and Andrew C. Steadman of Atlanta; her sister, Mae Carmichael Wells of Valdosta; and a nephew, Penn Wells of Atlanta.

Patricia Ann Broadwell

Patricia Ann Broadwell, 58, of Quitman died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at her residence after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Nov. 1, 2003, at the First Assembly of God Church in Valdosta with Pastor Bill Cotterill officiating.
