James Aubrey Davis Sr.

MADISON, Fla. — Dr. James Aubrey Davis Sr., 82, retired veterinarian, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in Madison, Fla.

The service will be Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Madison, Fla. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Madison, Fla. The family will receive friends at the Beggs Funeral Home Madison Chapel in Madison from 6-8 p.m. today.

Born in Grady County, Dr. Davis had lived in Madison with his wife and family for nearly 60 years. He was a 1944 graduate of the School of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University. His professional career spanned five decades, beginning in 1944 with State Veterinary License Number 236. His early career included service to Madison and surrounding counties, as well as statewide responsibilities with the Florida Livestock Board. Dr. Davis and others conceived and developed what is now the North Florida Livestock Show and Sale. Throughout his life, he held leadership roles in many professional organizations. Christian, Dr. Davis was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Madison, serving continually on the Board of Deacons for nearly 50 years. He gave unselfishly of his time and talents to the service of his community, as a leader and member of several local civic clubs, including Lifetime Membership in the International Lions Club.

After retirement, Dr. Davis focused his love and energy on his family and his beloved Creek Bed Farm. The site of countless gatherings of friends and family, Creek Bed Farm was the source of unbounded joy in his later years. Extensive travel, grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled his retirement years to overflowing.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Edith Lyndall Ragans Davis of Madison, Fla.; one son, Dr. James A. Davis Jr. and wife Judy of Tallahassee, Fla.; one daughter, Rebecca Davis Frame and husband Tim of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Dr. Jack L. Davis of Macon; one sister, Mary Davis Lee of Macon, Ga.; five grandchildren, James A. Davis III and wife Heather, Bri’Anne Davis Smith and husband jay, Allison Doris Wagnon and husband Daniel, Timothy S. Frame, Jr., and Andrew Davis Frame; and three great-grandchildren, Avery Smith, Kate Smith and Anna Bell Davis. — Beggs Funeral Home, Madison Chapel.



Mellie Pearl Fletcher

Mrs. Mellie Pearl Fletcher, 89, Perry, Fla., formerly of Cook County, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Doctors Memorial Hospital in Perry following a short illness.

She was born Dec. 22, 1914, to the late Littleton Albritton Young and the late Mandy Ella Tyson Young in Cook County, where she lived most of her life before moving to Perry, Fla., 30 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of the Concord Primitive Baptist Church in Cook County.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Jake Victor “J.V.” Fletcher, her son, Donald Fletcher and her daughter, Brenda Smith. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, James Lavern nd Joyce Fletcher of Perry, Fla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jo and Lindell Jones of Montgomery, Ala. and Barbara Ann and Sam Stevenson of Niceville, Fla.; one sister, Faye Cannon of Branford, Fla. and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Concord Primitive Baptist Church with Rev. Dell Young and Elder Buck Woods officiating. Interment will be at Concord Church Cemetery. Betty S. Holton

Mrs. Betty S. Holton, 70, Adel, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Tift Regional Medical Center following a short illness. She was a homemaker and a member of the Westside Baptist Church. She was born Aug. 2, 1934, to the late Virgil Wright Shiver and Bertha Lee Shiver in Quitman and lived most of her life in Cook County.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul W. Holton Sr., and two brothers and six sisters. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul W. Holton, Jr. and Peggy of Adel and Larry and Audrey Holton of Adel; three daughters and sons-in-law, Regina and Brian Lipsey of Oviedo, Fla., Ramonda Holton of Sparks, and Sharon and Warren Spradley of Brunswick; nine grandchildren, Holly and Kyle Holton of Adel, Heather and Chris Lipsey of Oviedo, Fla., Lee Henthorn of Sparks, Greg and Kayla Holton of Adel, and Ted and Rachael Spradley of Brunswick; one great-granddaughter, Christina Lipsey of Oviedo, Fla.; one sister, Willa Dean Barker of Quitman; special niece, Elnora Chapman; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Westside Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hendley and Rev. Wallace Barber officiating, with interment to follow in Woodlawn City Cemetery. — Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home.



Bruce Edward Kennedy Jr.

Bruce Edward Kennedy, Jr., 49, Valdosta died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at his home. He was born May 16, 1955, in Hamilton County, Fla. and had lived in Valdosta for many years. He attended Lowndes High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Reserves.

Survivors include a daughter, April Herring of Lee, Fla., two sons, Brian Edward Kennedy of Madison, Fla. and Bruce Eric Kennedy of Valdosta, special friend, Karen Kennedy of Valdosta; three grandsons, Drew and Zane Herring of Lee, Fla. and Zachary Bryant of Nashville; his father, Bruce Edward Kennedy Sr. of Valdosta; two sisters, Rhonda Jones of Sugarland, Texas and Bobbie Jean Mistick of Lake Hawaitha, N. J.; one brother, Bennie Edward Kennedy of Lakeland; and one stepson, Travis Norwood of Valdosta. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Kennedy.

Edith Whittle Maddox

VALDOSTA — Edith Whittle Maddox, 95, of Valdosta died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman.

She was born on August 9, 1909, in Mitchell County to the late Buford Yancey and Ida Belle Perry Whittle and had lived in Valdosta for 30 years and was formerly of Thomasville. Mrs. Maddox was a retired dietician with the Thomasville City Schools and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Valdosta and a member of the Joy Fidelis Sunday School Class. Mrs. Maddox was the first resident of Langdale Place.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Ben Stanaland of Valdosta; granddaughter and her husband, Meredith and Richard Jordan of Valdosta; grandson and his wife, Matt and Karla Stanaland of Valdosta; great grandchildren, Dudley Stanaland and Laura Stanaland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dudley Jones Maddox and six sisters, Stella Howell, Leona Russ, Loretta Steed, Lois Belt, Belle Stark and Clara Glover.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Mac Weaver officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville. Linzy David Melton

Mr. Linzy David Melton, 70, Waycross, died Sunday morning, Sept. 19, 2004 at his residence after an extended illness.

He was a native of and has lived most of his life in Ware County. He was a foreman at Gilman Paper Company in St. Mary’s and a member of the Kingfish Hunting Club. He was the son of the late Aaron Melton and Minnie Pittman Melton. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Thrift and Lucille Haynes, and a brother, Fleming Melton.

He is survived by his wife, Lynette Boyd Melton of Waycross; four children, Debbie Nurse (husband Larry) of Ventage, Fla., Lisa Sikes (husband Danny) of St. Marys, Lynn Melton of Waycross, and Linzy David Melton, Jr. (wife Beth) of Brunswick; three step-children, Dale Carter (wife Terri) of Nahunta, Christi Davis (husband Timmy) of Blackshear, George W. Carter of Nahunta; two brothers, Mitchell Melton (wife Francis) of Waycross and Eugene Melton (wife Mary) of St. Marys; three sisters, Pearl Tatum of Waycross, Nella Faye (Nell) Morgan of St. Marys, and Jeanette Hersey (husband Curtis) of Waycross; 18 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Kettle Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. The members of the Kingfish Hunting Club are asked to meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home to serve as honorary pallbearers.

Georgia Sally McDonald Mitchell

Mrs. Georgia Sally McDonald Mitchell, 78, of Jasper, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Suwanee Valley Nursing Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Mitchell was born Feb. 18, 1926, to the late William and Ella McDonald. She was a homemaker and member of Jasper First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Kenneth Mitchell, on Aug. 29, 2004.

Survivors include four sons, Bill, Danny and Stephen Mitchell, all of Jasper, and Gene Mitchell of Woodbine; one daughter, Marchetta McClendon, Jennings, Fla.; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in the chapel of Harry T. Reid Funeral Home, Jasper, Fla. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

William Morton Wallace Sr.

William Morton Wallace Sr., 96, R. C. McIntosh Retirement Center in Quitman, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Archbold Hospital in Thomasville. He was born on May 4, 1908, in Pawtucket, R.I., and had lived most of his life in Hebronville, Mass., and the Pawtucket area. Mr. Wallace was one of the first managers of the Mayflower Stores in Hebronville, Mass. He worked for the First National Stores in the Massachussets and Rhode Island area for 40 years. After retiring from the First National Stores, he worked for five years for Robbins Company in Attleboro, Mass. He was a member and Deacon of the Hebronville United Methodist Church in Hebronville, Mass. He attended United Methodist Church in Pawtucket, R.I.

He was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Local 328A99 Providence, R.I. and the Amalgamated Retirees Local 328, Providence, R.I. He was a member of the Ezekiel Bates Masonic Lodge, King Hiram Royal Arch Chapter, Bristol Commandery 029 Knights Templar and Hope Chaper #41, Order of the Eastern Star, all in Attleboro, Mass. and also Aleppo Temple AAONMS, Wilmington, Mass. and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Albany. After moving to Georgia in 1986, he became a member of the First Baptist Church in Quitman and served as chaplain pro tem for the Sholto Masonic Lodge #237.

He was the husband of 60 years to the late Avis B. Case Wallace, the son of the late Thomas Matthew Wallace and Elizabeth Morton Wallace and brother of the late Margaret Elizabeth Wallace.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas M. and Margorie Wallace of Hudson, Ohio; a son and a daughter-in-law, William M. Jr. and Lynn Wallace of Quitman; and a daughter, Beverly Wallace Woodworth of Pawtucket, R. I.; six grandchildren, Debbie Woodworth, Karen Lamson, Kathleen Woodworth, Jo-Ann Wallace Adams, Mike Wallace and Mark Wallace; great-grandchildren, James Adams, Elisia Adams, Kacy Adams, David Wallace, Cory Wallace, Matthew Veneri, Christopher Veneri, Kate Greenwood, Joshua Greenwood, Brenna Lamson and Connor Lamson, one great-great-granddaughter, Melonie Adams-Smith.

Bobby G. Phillips

Bobby G. Phillips, 60, Millwood, passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in the Twin Oak Convalescent Center after a lengthy illness. Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. today in the Lakeland Chapel of Music Funeral Services.
