Dorothy B. Dodd

VALDOSTA — Dorothy B. Dodd, 84, of Valdosta, died on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, after a short illness. Born in Sewickley Heights, Pa., on June 15, 1920, to the late James Wilfred and Etta Profator Barley, she had lived in this area for 26 years. Mrs. Dodd was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and felt a great love for her church. She had also worked for many years at Cakes, Cakes, Cakes in Harvey’s.

Mrs. Dodd is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie D. and Lewis L. Liggett of Carmel, Ind.; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger J. and Marcia J. Dodd, of Valdosta; five grandchildren, Kristin L. (Jared) Chandler, of Chicago, Ill.; Lauren Liggett, of Chicago; Matthew A. Dodd, of Valdosta; Andrew J. Dodd of Valdosta and Kristin D. McLeod of Valdosta. Also surviving are a sister, Irene Wolf; and a brother James Barley, both of Pittsburgh.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church at 11 a.m., today, Oct. 26, 2004. Father Peter Ingeman, the Rev. Lee Shafer, Deacon Patricia Marks, Deacon Stella Clark and Deacon Karyl Miller will officiate. Burial of the cremains will follow in the Christ Episcopal Urn Garden. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Episcopal Church. Ethel O. Nelson

JENNINGS, Fla. — Ethel O. Nelson, 85, of Jennings, Fla., passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at her home following a brief illness. Mrs. Nelson was born Aug. 9, 1919, to the late William and Agnes Matzke. Nelson moved to the Jennings area in 1996, from Brooksville, Fla. She was a retired hairdresser and was a member of Valdosta Messiah Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Robert Nelson, Jennings; three sons, Donald C. Nelson, Anchorage, Alaska, James R. Nelson, Newark, N.J., and Roger A. Nelson, Blowing Rock, N.C.; one daughter, Nancy M. Wiegand, Jennings, Fla.; two brothers, Willard Matzke, Lake Elmo, Minn., and Bill Matzke, Crookston, Minn.; three sisters, Pearl Kelly, Billings, Mont., June Krebs, Woodruff, Wis., and Mae Bangert, Cottage Grove Minn.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, in the chapel of Harry T. Reid Funeral Home, Jasper, Fla. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the funeral home. Virginia Parrish Summerlin

ADEL — Virginia Parrish Summerlin, 85, of Adel died Oct. 24, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Adel.

She was born on Sept. 14, 1919, in Adel to the late Homer Larue and Essie Giddens Parrish. She lived in Cook County most of her life. She was a retired teacher and homemaker and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.E. Summerlin; and two brothers, Larue Parrish and Charlie Parrish.

She is survived by one son, Bill Summerlin of Baton Rouge, La.; one daughter, Ginger Sears of Winder, Ga.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Allen L. Parrish of Adel.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Adel with the Rev. Ben Smith and Dr. Mike Ruffin officiating. Burial will be held in Woodlawn City Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Charlie Parrish Scholarship Fund c/o First Baptist Church of Adel.
