Grace H. Brooks
VALDOSTA– Grace H. Brooks, 88, a lifetime resident of Valdosta, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at a local nursing home after a brief illness.
Born on Jan. 22, 1917 in Abbeville, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Amanda Christopher Hughes and the widow of Carl Brooks of Valdosta. She was a retired spinner at Strickland Cotton Mill and a member of Gateway Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, Carl (Buddy) Brooks of Valdosta; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a brother, Edward Hughes of Albany; and sisters, Mary Helen Burger of Moultrie, Marie Hatcher of Florida and Clyde Franklin.
Funeral services for Grace H. Brooks will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Rose of Sharon Cemetery in Moultrie. The family will receive friends from 6- 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Mary Nell Carter
LENOX– Mary Nell Carter, 68, of Lenox, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Tift Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
She was born on Feb. 27, 1937, to the late Mac Cuen and Eunie Merle Bennett Pritchard. Mrs. Carter was a housewife and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Barber of Lenox; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles Jimmy and Gayle Carter of Valdosta and Cuen Timothy Carter of Tifton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Janice Teresa Carter of Lenox and Brenda and James Chadwick of Crossland; one brother and sister-in-law, Mac Ray and Elaine Pritchard of Ashburn; one sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor Faye and Doyle Sumner of Sparks; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Charles Wendell Carter, who passed away in 1981.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Pine Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Inez Dempsey
VALDOSTA — Inez Dempsey, 68, of Valdosta died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at the Brownwood Nursing Home in Moultrie. She was born on Aug. 7, 1936 in Mayo, Fla., to the late Lonnie Columbus and Rosa Thomas Purvis and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Lake Park.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Turner of Valdosta; one sister, Louise Weaver of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 16, 2005, in Lee Memorial Cemetery in Lee, Fla., with the Rev. Carlton Allen officiating. Adams English
VALDOSTA — Roberta Adams English, 88, of Valdosta died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on Aug. 16, 1916, in Telfair County to the late Alvin M. and Verbie Garnto Adams and had lived in Valdosta for several years. Mrs. English was a member of the Northside Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Euell McClung of Valdosta; son and daughter-in-law, Robert T. and Ann Pitts of Johns Allen, S.C.; her grandchildren and their spouses, Luther Jr. and Ginger Joiner, Joel and Jennifer Joiner, Lynne and Jody Wilson, Robert T., II and Tammy Pitts, Jason and Layla Pitts, Andy and Renee Pitts, Teresa and Bert Hoernschemeyer and Terrell McClung; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Ray of Tifton. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jodie T. Pitts and Thomas English and a daughter, Margie Sue Pitts.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 16, 2005, in Springhill Cemetery near McRae with the Rev. Robert Willis officiating. Stan Herring
LAKE PARK — Stan Herring, 41 of Lake Park, died unexpectedly while taking care of farm chores Wednesday, April 13, 2005.
Born on Nov. 5, 1963 in Lowndes County, he was the son of Ealie Doyle and Glenda Ann Dennis Herring. Stan loved farming. He enjoyed quail hunting and fishing with his children, was actively involved with his daughters’ 4H Club projects and was a member of a skeet team. He enjoyed being with his family and was a member of the Lake Park United Methodist Church.
Survivors are his wife, Shannan, daughters, Kelsi and Kayla and a son, Levi, all of Lake Park; parents, Ealie and Glenda Herring of Lake Park; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Danny and Joy Herring, Gene and Jan Herring, Russell and Susie Herring, Joey and Lisa Herring, all of Lake Park; his maternal grandmother, Ava Nell Dennis of Lake Park; parents-in-law, Tommy and Sharon Corbett of Jennings, Fla.; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Tammy and Ed Tudor of Lake Park, Cathy Jo Corbett, Lee and Gregg Brown of Jennings, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Vernon Dennis, and his paternal grandparents, Leland and Marie Herring.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lake Park United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mike Lyons will officiate. Burial will follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery. Willie Earl Hudson
STATENVILLE– Willie Earl Hudson, 91, of Statenville died Saturday, April 9, 2005, in a Valdosta hospital.
Mr. Hudson was a native of Marshall County, Miss., and a longtime resident of Statenville. He was a past service station operator and attended the Statenville Church of God.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Irene Hudson, and a son, Dillard “Gus” Hudson. Survivors include two sons, Kelly (Ann) Hudson Sr., of Statenville and Freddy Hudson, Valdosta; one daughter, Billie Swinford of Potts Camp, Miss.; a special daughter-in-law, Jane Hudson of Valdosta; two brothers, James and Fealon Hudson, both of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister, Katie Ruth Clayton of Meridian, Miss; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Estelle Scruggs
VALDOSTA — Estelle Scruggs, 93,a lifelong resident of Valdosta, died on April 14, 2005, at South Georgia Medical Center after a sudden illness.
Born in Macon, on Jan. 18, 1912, she was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Margaret Estelle Ellis Etheredge. Mrs. Scruggs had been associated with Belks. She was a charter member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, where she was active for many years with the Annual Bazaar and the Param Sunday School Class. Always helpful, caring and giving, Mrs. Scruggs ministered to others, especially to shut-ins. She enjoyed activities and fellowship at the Craig Center.
Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Pamela Fender of Valdosta; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Larry Tewell of Lawrenceville, Frances Villano (the late Donald T. Villano Jr.) of Hanover Township, Pa.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Franklin Fender Sr., her second husband, Eugene V. Scruggs, her son, Eugene “Rawhide” Fender, and two grandsons, Jeffery Eugene Tewell and Jessie Fender.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Craig Rikard will officiate. Ann Rude Merritt passed away on March 17, 2005, in Vinton, Va. Mrs. Merritt was a former member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church. She retired from the Lowndes County School system having served as Assistant principal at Lowndes Middle School and Parker Mathis Elementary School.
