Mary Barb

Day Nelson

Mary Barb Day Nelson, 76, passed away Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at home in Hahira from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Mary was born Nov. 21, 1928, in David, Republic of Panama, to George Dumitru and Hortensia Canto Barb. She met the love of her life, Allen H. “Bud” Day, while working in a U.S. Army payroll office in the Panama Canal Zone. They married in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 25, 1942. Captain Day was killed in an aircraft accident while serving on active duty in the United States Air Force on February 9, 1959.

On November 1, 1968, she married Lt. Col (ret.) Raymond B. Nelson, who preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 1992.

She is survived by her two loving daughters and their husbands, Vicki and Charles Friend of Alamogordo, N.M. and Samantha and David Peterson of Hahira; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Scott and Kathleen Owen of San Diego, Calif., and their children Emelia and Jace; Jennifer and Ryan Haskell of Dell Rapids, S.D., and their son Augustus; Kurt Peterson of Nashville, Tenn.; Kyle and Kelly Peterson of Hahira; and by her brother, Eli Barb of Los Angeles, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, George, John and Dan Barb.

She was a dedicated American Red Cross Gray Lady volunteer for more than 25 years, and later worked at the American Cancer Society “Lady Bug Boutique” thrift store in Orlando, Florida, where she lived from 1962 until moving to Valdosta in 1998.

She was a member of Bemiss United Methodist Church, an energetic and devoted grandmother, who taught her grandchildren many skills, including the game of tennis, of which she was an avid player. She competed in league bowling for many years and routinely jogged two miles per day until she became ill.

Eva M. Jordan

Mrs. Eva M. Jordan of Fayetteville passed away from this Earth to the heavens on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, after complications and a frustrating battle with cancer. She is survived by her three children, son Bert A. and Amby Jordan of Fayetteville, son Terry and Karen Jordan of Fayetteville and daughter Cynthia and Matt McMurray of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Rob A. Jordan, Amanda and James Jordan, and Isabella G. McMurray; brother, Jim C. Murray of Cordele; several nieces and nephews.

Eva had many friends who cherished her friendship and gave her hope during her last months. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved to travel to see other parts of the world. She was a hard worker and enjoyed life to its fullest. Eva was the wife of the late Bert A. Jordan Sr., who passed away in March 2003. She was born in Cordele in 1939 to the late Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Murray. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Nell M. Reed.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, in the chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville. Pastor Matt McMurray will officiate. Interment will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sunnyside Cemetery in Cordele. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m.

Amanda

Ross Williams

Amanda Ross Williams, 96, of Macon, formerly of Quitman, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at The Villas at College Hill in Macon.

Born in Memphis, Tenn., she had been a resident of Brooks County most of her life. She was the daughter of William John and pearl Gorham Ross. She was a retired social services employee for the state of Georgia and a member of the Welcome Hill Church of Christ.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Blodgett of Atlanta and Joni Vierginia Woolf of Macon; one son, John Calvert Williams of Cohutta; two grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Billie Ross Courtney of Thomasville; and a brother, W.J. Ross of Newport News, Va.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Welcome Hill Church of Christ with burial following in the Welcome Hill Church Cemeter. — Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home, Quitman.



James Wheeler

James Wheeler, 91, of Valdosta, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on May 17, 1914, in Grady County to the late Jessie Raines and Sallie Lou Hines Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler was the owner and operator of Valdosta Mattress Company, served in the Untied States Army from 1943 until 1945, was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church, charter member of the Men’s Garden Club and the Valdosta Camellia Society.

He is survived by his wife, Adrene Morgan Wheeler of Valdosta; one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Susan Wheeler of Jesup; and one sister, Amanda Wheeler Hicks of Thomasville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Alford and Dr. Russ Elkins officiation. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral Home.
