Kenneth Cecil Clayton
LAKE PARK — Kenneth Cecil Clayton of Lake Park passed away on Aug. 9, 2005, at his residence. Born on April 7, 1914, in Echols County, he was the son of the late Judge William Douglas Clayton and Emma Herring Clayton. He retired from Napa Automotive as a bookkeeper. A former member of Forrest Street United Methodist Church, he taught the Adult Sunday School Class for many years and was Church Treasurer for 18 years. He later moved his membership to Lake Park United Methodist Church. He was loved by all who knew him. As a teenager he wrote many poems, songs and short stories of which one will be read at his funeral.
Survivors are his wife, Nona Colson Clayton of Lake Park and would have celebrated 61 years of marriage on Aug. 25; two daughters and one son-in-law, Karen Aubie of Valdosta, Carol and John Gavin of Lake Park; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Trish Clayton of Lake Park; four granddaughters, Dana Gavin, Tina Hamilton, Michelle (Dwayne) Culpepper, Suzanne (Richard) Harvey; great-grandchildren, Celeste Gaskins, Austin Hamilton, Dustin Hamilton, Bryceson Harvey, Ethan Harvey; four sisters, Iona Daughtary, Evelyn Prine both of Statenville, Ruth Dykeman of Valdosta, Annie Lee of Tampa; and a large number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Vernon Clayton, Wilma Clayton, Ernie Clayton and A. B. Clayton and one sister, Judith Guy.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., today, Aug. 11, 2005, in the chapel of the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home in Lake Park. The Rev. Michael P. Lyons and the Rev. Elvin East will officiate. Burial will follow in Carter Cemetery. The family will receive friends today at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time. Edith Smith
VALDOSTA — Edith Smith, 75, of Valdosta died on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. Born on July 2, 1930, in Pavo, she was the daughter of the late George Edward Sr. and Lettie Irene Leachman Smith. Mrs. Smith was employed with The Valdosta Daily Times for 47 years. She worked in bookkeeping accounting, wrote ‘The Bookworm’ column, was secretary for the late Tenny Griffin and most recently served as the receptionist for the past 20 years. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors are her husband, Richard D. Smith of Valdosta; daughters and son-in-law, Phyllis and Marvin Shelton, Kathryn “Desi” DeVane, all of Valdosta; grandchildren, Jessica DeVane and Justin DeVane, both of Valdosta; brother and sister-in-law, George E. Jr. and Ruth Smith of Valdosta; sister-in-law, Doris Reddick of Valdosta; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Alexander Smith; a son-in-law, Charles’ “Wink” DeVane; two brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dean Poling will officiate. Mrs. Smith will be cremated after the service according to her wishes. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edith Smith Memorial Fund at The Valdosta Daily Times. Mary Linda Wood, 54, of Quitman passed away Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at her residence after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at Cross Point Church with the Rev. Steve Atkinson officiating.
