Bill Boykin

HAHIRA — Bill Boykin, 69, of Hahira died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born on March 15, 1935, in Berrien County to the late Willis and Ruby Suggs Boykin and had lived in Hahira most of his life. Mr. Boykin was a retired roofing contractor and a honorary member of the Lobo Hunting Club. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Boykin of Hahira; his six children and their spouses, Andy and Sharon Boykin, Roger and Carolyn Boykin, Joe Boykin, Pete and Rachel Boykin, Amy and Ron Chason and Tony Boykin, all of Hahira; 14 grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Vinson and Judy Boykin, Julian and Sharon Boykin, all of Hahira, the Rev. Wayne and Cindy Boykin of Adel; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Nell and Gerald Leveille of Hahira, Lucy Couch of Macon, Mytrice and Roy Clark of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alice Davis; and a brother, Gerald Boykin.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in the chapel of Martin/McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. R.T. Castleberry and the Rev. Wayne Boykin officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. E.C. ‘Buddy’ Clements

NASHVILLE — E.C. “Buddy” Clements, 67, of Nashville died on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005 at his residence. He was born on April 3, 1937 in Dale County, Ala., to the late William T. Hunt and Jewelle C. Hunt Clements. He was a retired truck driver, U.S. Navy veteran and member of Flat Creek Baptist Church. He was the widower of Ann Luke Clements who died in 2002.

He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Hand of Nashville, Vickie Shoupe, Enigma; two sons, Anthony Britt Clements, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., William Henry Clements, Tybee Island; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, William Harold Clements, Alexandria, Va., Charles Ray Clements, Bismarck, N.D.

Edgar Howard Coody

VALDOSTA — Edgar Howard Coody, 82, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at his residence. Born on April 27, 1922, in Lowndes County, he was the son of the late Richard A. and Mattie Zipperer Coody. He retired from the civil service after 23 years of service and worked as a combination welder for the Naval Weapons Station in Charleston, S.C. He was a member of Redland Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Moore Coody of Valdosta; daughter, Sandra Burris of Valdosta; step grandchildren, Bob and Tonya Burris of Summerville, S.C., Patricia and Clint Holmes and Tom and Stacy Burris of Richmond, Va., Donna and Dave Sutherland of Washington State; three stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Eunice Thompson of Jesup, Lavinia Hammock of Clyattville, Maxine Cothron and Mary Foster of Valdosta, Vernita and Clair Fletcher of Lake Park; brothers and sister-in-law, L.T. and Gladys Coody and Willie Joe Coody of Valdosta; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Mamie Lou Speer, Mattie Clyde Albritton, Agnes Redish, Marie Aschenbrenner; and brothers Grover Coody and Richard A. Coody.

Rosa Underwood Crosby

VALDOSTA — Rosa Underwood Crosby, 89, of Valdosta passed away Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, in Quitman after a lengthy illness.

Born in Newton County, she was the daughter of Albert and Clara Edwards Underwood. She was a homemaker and a member of the Welcome Hill Church of Christ.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Jamie Wisenbaker of Valdosta; daughter-in-law, Sue Crosby, Valdosta; six grandchildren, Charles Crosby, Gerald Crosby, LeAnn Brantley, Jill Lawler, Jason Wisenbaker, and Joni Wisenbaker; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie H. Crosby; a son, Hoyt Crosby; and a daughter, Jeanette Crosby.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Welcome Hill Church of Christ with Gordon Teffeteller, Jerry Herring and Evans McMullen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mary Katherine Stephenson Hafner

OCALA, Fla. — Mary Katherine Stephenson Hafner, 84, of Ocala, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, in Rome, Ga. Born on July 2, 1920, in Remerton, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Irene Harris Stephenson of Valdosta. She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Tammy Hafner of Calhoun, Ga.; granddaughters, Meagan Hafner of Calhoun, Jennifer Leal and her husband Jeff of Newport Ritchie, Fla., and Valerie White of Chatsworth, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Brittany and Cole Leal and Cullen and Elise White; sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Jim Parker of Jennings, Fla., Joyce Johnson of Thomasville, Dorothy and Dale Charos of Valdosta; brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Marion Stephenson of Lake Park, Hugh and Betty Stephenson of Quitman, Leland Stephenson of Valdosta; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hafner Sr.; son, Craig Hafner of Panama City, Fla.; and brothers, Willard Stephenson and Lankford Stephenson of Valdosta.

George A. Horkan Jr.

MOULTRIE — Senior Judge George A. Horkan Jr., 78, of Moultrie, died on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.

He was born on March 9, 1926, in Moultrie, Ga., the son of the late George A. Sr. and Martha Olliff Horkan. He was a life-long resident of Moultrie. He graduated from Moultrie High School in 1943. He was a combat veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific war zone.

He received his A.B. degree from Mercer University, 1950, and his J.D. degree from the University of Georgia School of Law, cum laude, in 1952, where he also served on the school Honor Court and as a student editor of the Georgia Bar Journal in 1952.

Admitted to the practice of law in the Georgia and Federal Courts in 1952, he practiced law in Moultrie 1952-1969.

He served as Judge, Moultrie Municipal Court, 1957-69; as District Attorney, Southern Judicial Circuit of Georgia, 1969-72; Judge, Superior Courts, Southern Judicial Circuit of Georgia, 1972-1994, and as Chief Judge of the Circuit, 1979-1994. He served as Senior Judge, Superior Courts of Georgia, 1995-present.

He served as president of the Moultrie Bar Association; as a member of the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission, 1977-81; the Georgia Criminal Justice Council, 1975-76; the Judicial Council of Georgia, 1982; as Administrative Judge for the 2nd Judicial District of Georgia; and as a Member of the Council of Superior Court Judges of Georgia, 1972-present.

He served as President of the Moultrie Kiwanis Club, 1963; as an Adult advisor for the Moultrie Youth Center; president of Elementary School PTA; president of the semi-pro Dixie Baseball League; as a director of the Georgia-Florida professional baseball league; president of Moultrie Touchdown Club; director Sunset Country Club; director Moultrie YMCA; chairman of the Board of Deacons and as an Elder of Moultrie First Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Davis Horkan; sons and daughters-in-law, George A. Horkan III and wife Alicia, and Frank D. and Lisa Horkan, all of Moultrie; daughter and son-in-law, Martha Horkan Tyndall and husband Mark of Lawrenceville; six grandchildren, Amy Morgan, Lisa Warren, Will Horkan, Davis Horkan, Laurel Tyndall, Caleb Tyndall; three great-grandchildren, Savannah Morgan, Daren Kent, and Gage Kent. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Arthur Horkan Sr. and Martha Olliff Horkan; and great-grandson, Sydney Morgan.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church in Moultrie with the Rev. Hugh Ward officiating. Burial will be held in Westview Cemetery. Alberta (Berta) Lucas

VALDOSTA — Alberta (Berta) Lucas, 83, died at her home in Valdosta, on Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, after a long illness. Born in Statenville on Oct. 11, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Payton and Mineva Holton Swilley. Mrs. Lucas was a homemaker who loved to cook and plant flowers in her yard and garden. She enjoyed her family and friends, country music and watching Atlanta Braves Baseball.

Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Eddie Leake of Valdosta; grandchildren, Donald (Sonja) Corbett, Sarina (Dan) Bennett, Robert (Kelly) Simpson, all of Valdosta, James (Terri) Lucas of Hopewell, Va.; great-grandchildren, Carl Bennett, Robert Simpson Jr., Ashley Corbett, Kyle Simpson, Kat Corbett, Clayton Lucas and Julia Lucas of Valdosta; sisters, Lotie Null of Lakeland, Blanche Swilley of Tennessee; brother, Jimbo Swilley of Florida; special friends, K.V. and Marie Gibson. Mrs. Lucas was preceded in death by her husband, James Noble Lucas; and sons, James Noble Lucas Jr. and Donald Pete Saunders.

Neva Hutchinson Rowe

VALDOSTA — Neva Hutchinson Rowe, 79, of Valdosta died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at her home. She was born on March 28, 1925, in Hahira to the late Perry Richard and Neva Ellen Coppage Hutchinson and was a lifelong resident of this area. Mrs. Rowe was retired from the Department of Human Resources and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Homer C. (Skip) Jr. and Judy Rowe, Ricky and Leah Rowe, all of Valdosta; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Ed Davis of Augusta; five grandchildren, Chris Rowe, Ansley Rowe, Kyle Rowe, Caitlyn Rowe and Anna Rowe; one great-grandchild, Asher Rowe; one sister, Gladys Coleburn of Woodstock, Ga.; one brother, James Hutchinson of Callahan, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer C. Rowe Sr.
