Robert Lewis Brown

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Brooks County native Robert Lewis Brown, a Jacksonville doctor and community advocate died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 55 years old.

Dr. Brown, one of 10 children born to parents Prince Wesley Jr. and Willie Mae Brown, grew up on his father’s farm in Quitman. After graduating with honors from Washington Street High School, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Fort Valley State College.

Brown later served in the Army before receiving his master’s degree from Tuskegee Institute. Dr. Brown graduated from the University of Florida’s College of Medicine in 1984. He spent the years since building his medical practice and proudly serving his patients at the Soutel Family Practice Center in Jacksonville.

A standing testament to Dr. Brown’s commitment to his community is the Winn-Dixie grocery store adjacent to his medical office. At his urging, Winn-Dixie officials built the facility to better serve the needs of Brown’s patients and the community at-large.

Dr. Brown will long be remembered for his Community Appreciation Day events held annually at the Winn-Dixie store. Participants were always treated to food, fun, and mini-health fairs topped off with Brown’s good humor and loving spirit.

Left to cherish Dr. Robert Lewis Brown’s memory are his wife, Gloria Brown; his children, Robert Lewis Brown Jr. of Jacksonville, Darrick Brown of Jacksonville, Denca Brown of Tallahassee and Calvin Brown of Gainesville; one grandchild; seven brothers and one sister; and a host of relatives and friends.
