Movie Review: When robots threaten Earth, Capt. H. Joseph Sullivan (Law) and Paulie Perkins (Paltrow), a news reporter, must save Earth before an evil scientist annihilates all life on the planet. With enemies and robots everywhere, Sullivan and Perkins become globetrotters, trying to save the planet.
Jude Law and Sadie Frost, Law’s ex-wife, are co-producers of this production. “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” is very similar to the cheesy B-movies of the 1930s through 1950s, except “Sky Captain” is in sepia tone rather than black and white. Also, like older films, the scenes are done inside a studio. The difference being that all the scenes have enhanced computer-generated imagery. Director Conran spoofs the movies of yesteryear with great accuracy: the hero, the daring damsel, and the planet during a perilous time. Even the lighting and camera shots are done as if this movie was made 60 years ago. Law and Paltrow are adequate, but Angelina Jolie does little in this film. Other than to draw in a crowd, one has to wonder why Jolie got a top-billing slot. The producers totally overlook Giovanni Ribisi, who gives a splendid performance. Also, audiences should look out for Michael Gambon as a newspaper editor and a younger image of Sir Laurence Olivier via archival footage. “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” is a welcome, nostalgic look back to yesteryear that provides plenty of entertainment.
Grade: B (Tomorrow looks like a good day.)
