$600,000 grant slated to rehabilitate 13 local houses

Martha Orthoefer, representative of North Central Florida Regional Planning Council (NCFRPC) was at the Town Council meeting March 8 to discuss the ongoing grant process from the Department of Community Affairs.
The $6000,000 grant is a housing rehabilitation grant that was submitted in 2002 by the Mayo Town Council. Orthoefer said Mayo met the criteria to be awarded the grant that is a federal grant, dispersed through the Department of Community Affairs.
She said about one-half the applications that are submitted are approved.
An Advisory Committee made up by local residents, Edward Walker, Margarite Jackson, Bessie Lee Massey, Deborah Hamilton and Town Council member Ken Hewett reviewed citizens applications that were submitted.
Thirteen houses are accepted for renovation.
Orthoefer said local contractors may submit their bid and low bidders will be awarded the contract with the state.
The project should be completed by 2005 she said.
Town Council members also discussed the Animal Control Shelter location and construction of the shelter.
The Town Council meets every second Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall located on West Main Street.
