“I enjoyed coaching these guys,” Head Soccer Coach Frank Johnson said. “They never gave up and they never folded.”

Suwannee’s varsity boys’ soccer team set two school records this year. They scored the most goals ever scored by a boys’ soccer team at Suwannee High and they gave up the fewest goals to their opponents. Suwannee outscored their opponents 48-18.

The team’s record this year was 9-11-1. Ten of their losses were by only one goal.

This was Johnson’s first season as head coach.

“I took over a team that went 2-15-2 last year,” Johnson said. “We made a lot of improvement, but we could have been better.”

Michael Bowen received the first award of the evening for the varsity. He had the team-high goals scored. Bowen scored 10 goals during the season.

Most Valuable Midfielder went to Chris Hett.

Top Defender went to two players, Kevin Pate and Will Posey.

Most Improved went to Wes Posey.

The Young Guns Awards went to two underclassmen, Billy Moran and Reggie Johnson.

Most Valuable Player was the goalie, Matt Yanossy.

Gatorade High School Athletic Award for Rookie of the Year went to Matt Yanossy. The Top Senior Player Award went to Chris Hett.

The Gatorade Will to Win Award went to William Yanossy.

The Play to Win Awards went to the three team captains, Chris Hett, Michael Bowen and Reggie Johnson.

This was the first year Suwannee had an official JV boys’ soccer team. The JV coach was Stan Posey.

“Moving into high school soccer is a big transition for these kids,” Posey said. “They’re moving from rec soccer to a higher level of competition.”

The JV had an 11-3 record for the season.

“That’s not a bad record,” Posey said. “It was especially satisfying to beat Columbia and to come back and beat Santa Fe in the rematch.”

Posey spoke about what the JV program tries to do to give the players a good start and teach them the basics.

“We try to teach the importance of passing, commitment to team and the importance of keeping your pants up. We try to teach them the importance of practice, playing under control, using both feet and playing with confidence.”

The Top JV Offensive Player was Tyson Hurst. Top JV Defensive Player went to Miguel Rodriguez. Most Improved JV Player went to Jason Fross.

The two team-leader awards were chosen by the team and went to Greg Henderson and Tyson Hurst. The JV Coaches Award went to J.D. Hales.
