Bulldog soccer looks unstoppable

The Suwannee men’s soccer juggernaut continues to roll, shutting out both the Newberry Panthers Monday night and the Taylor County Bulldogs Tuesday night.

At home on Monday, Suwannee dominated the play and mercy-ruled Newberry 8-0. The well-coached Panthers were hampered with four players out, including two senior captains.

Michael Bowen opened the scoring 10 minutes into the game, slamming the ball past the goalie after an assist by Cullen Boggus. Reggie Johnson claimed the next goal, Bowen assisting.

At about 30 minutes into the half, Bowen again kicked the ball toward the net, the goalie came out to it, another defender deflected the ball, and Tim Smith was there to boot it in for a goal. Suwannee was up at halftime 3-0.

Newberry suffered the second half. Ten minutes in, Bowen volleyed the ball to the net, picking it out of the air with his foot off a corner kick from Wes Posey. The Panther keeper caught the ball outside of the goal, but lost his balance and fell back into the net for a Suwannee point. Immediately afterward, Billy Moran outplayed the hapless keeper for goal number five.

Dangerous Michael Bowen next broke away from three defenders and, as the goalie dove for the ball, Bowen chipped it over him for the score. Newcomer Logan Hall notched his first goal with a direct drive into the net after an assist by Wes Posey. The final goal was scored after J.D. Hales advanced a through ball to the speeding Reggie Johnson, who was fouled in the box. The resulting penalty kick and last point was made by Matt Yanossey, who had changed shirts with Moran to play the front of the field. The game was called with six minutes on the clock.

Tuesday night in Perry, the 4-3 Taylor County Bulldogs were also impeded by illness, with four starters out. Perry proved to be a scrappy little team, however, and Suwannee was unable to score until about halfway into the first period.

Will Posey put the first mark on the board with a high arching kick over the outstretched arms of the goalie. Converting on a corner kick by Reggie Johnson, Billy Moran tapped the ball in behind the keeper.

An overzealous Tyson Hurst drew a yellow card near the end of the half after coming too close to the goalie for the second time. The count at the break was a respectable 2-0.

Taylor County’s fatigue and lack of substitutes showed early in the second period. Eight minutes in, Cullen Boggus zinged the ball in from across the field. Wes Posey went down after being hit in the leg. In the resulting volley, a Perry kick into the net actually got past goalie Matt Yanossey, only to be saved by defender Greg Henderson.

Cullen Boggus also proved to be in the right place at the right time when he tipped in the ball from in front of the goal after an assist from Michael Bowen.

Goal number five was banged in by Reggie Johnson with five minutes left in the game. Johnson also claimed the sixth goal with an assist by Moran, as the goalie foolhardily came out for the ball. Thoughts of another mercy-ruled game were dispelled as time ran out with the final score Suwannee 6, Taylor County 0.

Coach Frank Johnson pointed out that the Suwannee men’s team has already scored 51 goals this season. The season is only half over and the 51 goals is more than any previous season total. Seven of the games have been shut-outs, and only seven points have been scored by opponents. Only four goals have been scored against Matt “The Wall” Yanossey, two of which were penalty kicks directly on goal.
