Approximately 46.7 grams of cannabis was kept off the streets of Mayo Easter Sunday when the well-trained Lafayette County Interdiction Team, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Deputy Scott Hamlin and LCSO Deputy Geoff Condy, observed a 2005 Chevy Impala traveling at a high rate of speed on U.S. 27 east of Mayo.

The team was working radar about 11 p.m. when the suspect Kemmico Sarorado Smith, 24, 165 Kalender St. Opalocka sped past the deputies in a 60 m.p.h. zone.

According to the LCSO report the deputies gave pursuit, with Hamlin advising Condy to pick up two bags in the highway thrown from Smith’s car.

Hamlin’s report states he stopped the suspect’s car and after interviewing the three occupants it was determined that the bags were thrown by Smith, a passenger in the front seat. Upon further search Smith was found to be in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

The bags thrown from the car also contained cannabis. The total weight of the drugs was 46.7 grams. The street value is somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 Authorities say the loss of human worth and the cost to the judicial system is incalculable.

Smith was arrested by Hamlin and transported to the Lafayette County Detention Center where he was charged with possession of cannabis over 20 grams with intent to sell or deliver within 1000 ft. of a church and possession of drug paraphernalia.
