End of an era

It is with great honor we make the public announcement that Marjorie G. Lee is retiring from Marjorie’s Beauty Salon. Marjorie’s has been in continuous operation since 1949.

It all began with Marjorie’s parents the late Ernest and Bennie Mae Griner. Mr. Griner began the barber shop business in Hamilton County in 1921. He had several locations before he opened Annie Laurie’s Barber and Beauty Shop on Hatley Street in downtown Jasper. Mrs. Griner operated her beauty salon in the rear of the barber shop. Growing to become a “family affair,” said Marjorie. It eventually included daughters Marjorie and Bessie Mae. Over the years the community came and enjoyed the hair styling services and fellowship in this family operated business.

In 1941, Marjorie’s Beauty Salon was opened when Marjorie purchased and operated her own shop. The salon has been in business in Hamilton County for 63 years. As a child and teenager this writer always went to Marjorie’s. It was truly the local gathering place. Fond memories were made of days spent at Marjorie’s.

Marjorie Lee not only has been a serving Hamilton County citizen, but serves Jasper First United Methodist faithfully as well.

It is sad to see the end of an era, but Marjorie has sold her shop to Christina McCulley who will continue operating the beauty salon.

Marjorie said, “On behalf of the Griner family and the Lee family thank you Hamilton County for your patronage and kindness over the last 83 years.” She went on to add, “this has been a part of my life that I will miss very much.”

Marjorie plans to spend more time with her family as well as traveling. She is married to Henry (Nip) Lee and they have two sons, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She will also enjoy pursuing her artistic interests and enjoying her well deserved retirement.

We wish you well and send a special “thank you” for all your service over the years to this community.
