Fast pitch softball team pays tribute to coach

On March 30, the Suwannee High School Ladydogs Fast Pitch Softball team paid tribute to their Coach, Jeff Smith and his wife, Stephanie, before the district game against Florida High.

The team did this because Stephanie Smith’s youngest son, Cameron, was recently diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.

As the Suwannee players’ names were announced, each player turned around so the crowd could see the embroidered patch with Cameron’s name and a cross on their uniform. The patch is a symbol of the team’s prayers for Cameron and his family.

As a team, this is just a small way to show our support and understanding of the journey that lies ahead for our coach’s family and the family of Cameron’s Dad, Jeh Howell.

Then, during the District playoffs in Madison the last week of April, Nat Norfleet, Madison’s head coach, and the District host, organized another tribute to Coach Jeff. Coach Norfleet contacted the other five schools in our District, and before our game against East Gadsden, the teams went on the field and presented Coach Jeff and his daughter Katie, autographed softballs and cards for Cameron. The cards and softballs were an expression of the prayers the teams bring to his family. As Coach Jeff said that night, “Softball is just a game, friendship is what really matters, family is what really matters, enjoy playing with your friends since you never know what will happen in your life”

Coach Jeff, Stephanie, Cameron and family members, your team and friends are praying for all of you. God Bless.

Coach Jeff, Stephanie, and Cameron’s family appreciate the support and prayers that have been extended to them. A special thank you is given to all who have shown their support to them.
