Fourth Annual Garner Carmichael Golf Tournament set for Aug. 28

The Fourth Annual Garner Carmichael Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held at the Suwannee Country Club on Saturday, Aug. 28. Tee times will be split with some at 8 a.m. and the afternoon group starts at 1 p.m.

There will be 36 three-member teams competing in this year’s annual fundraising event. The proceeds benefit Suwannee High and the Suwannee/Hamilton Technical Center. The tournament has raised over $10,000 in scholarship money in its first three years to help local students continue their education in preparation for trade and technical careers.

Proceeds provide financial assistance to students to help defray the costs of testing and certification fees required for job placement in such careers as auto mechanics, business, culinary arts, computer technology, agriculture, civil and environmental engineering and teaching.

The tournament and scholarship fund are named in honor of Garner Carmichael, a man who dedicated his life to working with the youth of Live Oak and surrounding communities. Close to 50 local businesses and individuals have stepped forward to sponsor the event this year.

“The community has really embraced this event, and I’m so proud and grateful for all the support we’ve received,” said Marjorie Carmichael, widow of the late Garner Carmichael.

The entry fee includes a barbecue luncheon at noon. In addition to prizes for the top 10 teams, gift certificates will be awarded for longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin. A set of golf clubs will be awarded to the first hole-in-one and drawings will be held for door prizes.
