The girls weightlifting is being structured in a different way this year. There are two sectional meets and the top three in each weight class in the first sectional get to advance to the next. The first three places at that meet get to advance to the state meet.
The first sectional, state qualifier meet was held at Suwannee High School last Friday at 12:30 p.m. This was for the Lady Dog’s district. Wakulla took first place, Suwannee placed second, Columbia third and Ft. White was fourth.
Seven Lady Dog weight lifters qualified to advance to the next sectional meet which will take place in Keystone Heights on Jan. 23.
In the 110 pound weight class, Nikky Johnson, in the 129 weight class Heather LeBlanc, in the 154 weight class Lesley Cook, in the 183 weight class Melanie Barton, in the 183 weight class Adrienne Johnson, in the 199 weight class Kandis Lear, and in the over 199 weight class Danielle Smith.
Suwannee had three girls win their division. Heather LeBlanc took the 129 class, Melanie Barton took the 183 and Danielle Smith took the over 199.
Danielle Smith was once again the stand-out lifter breaking her old school record for the third time. She benched 150 and cleaned 160.
