Lady Dogs take two more wins

Lady Dog volleyball is now 5-6 for the year and coming on strong behind four straight victories. Suwannee’s varsity volleyball team defeated Hamilton County Monday, Sept. 22 and defeated Lafayette in the gym in front of the student body on Tuesday, Sept. 23.



The Lady Dogs won two out of three matches to take the game against Hamilton. The scores were 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19 for a sweep of the Hamilton girls.



Leading the Dogs against Hamilton was Marcella Walker. Walker had 15 service points, three kills, five aces, five assists and one blocked shot.

Sharon Jelks had seven service points, four kills, four aces, five assists and one block.

Heather Benson had five service points, two aces and 15 assists.

Kortney Cherry had four service points, three kills and three assists.

Merlonda Owens had three service points and one assist.

Heather LeBlanc had one service point and two kills.

Lindsey Gaskins had one service point, three kills, one ace and one assist.

Nereyda Pecina had three assists.

In the game against Lafayette, Suwannee won the first match of the game 25-19. But even after a huge come-from-behind effort out of the Lady Dogs, they lost the second match 18-25. The Lady Dogs took an early lead in game three. The girls ran up 11 unanswered points to start off the game behind the strong serve of Heather Benson. The Lafayette girls just couldn’t break Benson’s booming serve. The final score of that match was 25-15.

In the final match of the game, once again the Lady Dogs ran up a huge eight-point lead behind the crushing serve of Heather Benson. The final score for the last match was 25-7.

The leading player against Lafayette was Heather Benson with 26 service points, 15 aces, 15 assists and one dink.

Sharon Jelks shared in the glory with 18 service points, four kills, seven aces, three assists, one block and one dink.

Lindsey Gaskins had four service points and three aces.

Merlonda Owens had four service points and three aces.

Marcella Walker had five kills and three assists.

Heather LeBlanc had three service points, two aces and one assist.

Kortney Cherry had three service points, one kill, two aces and three dinks.

Kyla Serrona had two assists.

Nereyda Pecina had one assist.



Look for more Lady Dog volleyball at home again on Oct. 2 against district foe East Gadsden. Game time is 6:30 p.m. Go Lady Dogs!
