Retha Mae Jones

Retha Mae Jones, a homemaker, age 84, died Friday, April 16, 2004 in Lake City. She was a native and lifelong resident of Lafayette County, and the daughter of the late John T. McClain and Ila (Purvis). Mrs. Jones was a member of the Assembly of God in Mayo. She was a nursemaid for her husband for many years, organized a clothing ministry in Mayo out of her home, she also volunteered for the Extension Co-op service handing out commodities. She was an excellent quilt maker, she loved to sing, loved to can foods and she loved her Day Lilies, she enjoyed nature, especially watching birds and fishing. She was preceded in death by her husband of 18 years, Alva Jones.



Survivors include: (2) sons; Jackie Leon Walker, of Lakeland, Fl. Thomas Mitchell Walker, of Mayo, (1) daughter; Linda Hamlin and husband Dub, of Mayo, (1) brother; David McClain, of High Springs, Fl., (10) grandchildren and (17) great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.



Graveside services were held at 10 A.M. on Monday, April 19, 2004 at the Day Town Cemetery, with Rev. Larry Law officiating. Interment followed at the Day Town Cemetery. Family received friends from 2 – 5 P.M. on Saturday evening at the Mayo Chapel.

Elzie Foster Solano, Jr.



Elzie Foster Solano, Jr., 88, died April 5, 2004, at Lafayette Health Care Center. He was born and resided in St. Augustine until moving to Mayo in 1996. He was a retired machinist from the Florida East Coast Railway. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Hastings Chapter of the American Legion and Ancient City Baptist Church.



Services were held in St. Augustine on April 10, 2004, at Craig Funeral Home and Crematory. Flowers are gratefully declined; those wishing may make a contribution in his memory to the American Heart Association, 5851 St. Augustine Road, Jacksonville, FL 32207, or by calling (800) 242-8721.



He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert Bruce and Susan Solano, three grandchildren; Brian, Elliott and Lauren Solano; two sisters: Iline Thompson and Barbara Colee, both of St. Augustine; one brother: Merlon Solano, St. Augustine.



Gary Luther Thomas Jr.



On April 20, 2004, Gary Luther Thomas Jr., age 84, enjoyed his homecoming with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at the Lake City Veteran Hospital Hospice Unit, Lake City, Florida.



Mr. Thomas was born in Lee, Florida on January 20, 1920 and moved to Lafayette County in 1929. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a retired farmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.



Mr. Thomas was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.



Survivors include his wife, Maybelline Thomas, of Mayo. Three sons, Owen Thomas, Lester Thomas, and Edward Thomas, all of Mayo, Fl. A brother, Wyatt Thomas, of Mayo and a sister, Kathleen Brannon, of Mayo, Fl. One greanddaughter, four grandsons, one great-grandson, several nieces and nephews.



Viewing was Wednesday, April 21, 2004 in Mayo at the Joe P. Burns Chapel from 6 P.M. – 9 P.M. Graveside Services will be Thursday, April 22, 2004 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at 11 A.M. Arrangements by Joe P. Burns Funeral Home of Mayo, Fl.



Edna Mae Weaver



Edna Mae Weaver, a homemaker, age 58, died Friday, April 16, 2004 at Shands in Gainesville. She was a native of Taylor County, Florida and a resident of Taylor and Lafayette Counties. She was the daughter of the late James B. Snipes and Josie (Purvis). She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward June Weaver.



Survivors include; (4) sons; Ricky Weaver, R.L. Weaver, Charles Weaver, all of Mayo, Fl.; and Edward Lee Weaver of Beachville, Fl. (6) brothers; Buddy Snipes, Tommy Snipes, and Tony Snipes, all of Perry, Fl., Robert Snipes, Bobby Snipes, of Mayo, and Delbert Snipes, of Shady Grove, Fl., (3) sisters; Margaret McNutt of Ocala, Penny Snipes and Cheryl Clark, both of Shady Grove, Fl., (8) grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.



Graveside services were held at 3 P.M. on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at the Day Cemetery, with Rev. Dennis Nobles and Rev. Mark Mercer officiating.

Those wishing to, may make donations to help with the funeral expenses.
