According to the Drug-Free Coalition of Suwannee County the more often children and teens eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to drink, smoke or use illegal drugs. That’s the reason the coalition urges you to support Family Day-A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children. Celebrated each year on the fourth Monday in September – Monday, Sept. 26 this year – Family Day is a national effort to promote parental engagement as a simple, effective way to reduce youth substance abuse and raise healthier children.
During meals, talk with your kids. Turn off the TV and take the phone off the hook. Involve the entire family in planning and cooking the meal. If your schedule makes it impossible to eat dinner together, try having breakfast together or engaging in another family activity, such as a playing a board game or having a late night snack together.
Parental engagement is the single most effective weapon in preventing substance abuse among children and teens. The Drug-Free Coalition sincerely hopes you will utilize this weapon fully.
