Suwannee volleyball wins first match of the district tournament

Suwannee varsity volleyball defeated Taylor County in the first match of the district championship. Suwannee traveled to FSU High on Oct. 19 to play. They were seeded in at number three with their first match against Taylor. The Lady Dogs took out Taylor in three games 25-16, 25-16 and 25-12. The Lady Dogs advanced to the next round of the competition which was held Thursday, Oct. 21, again in Tallahassee, this time against second-seed Wakulla. Results for that game will appear in Friday’s edition of your Suwannee Democrat.
Hitting hard on the net against Taylor was Ashley Rose. Rose had 12 kills for a team-high kill rate. Rose also had eight service points, two of them aces, and three assists.
Kyla Serrano was hot in the serving department. Serrano had 13 service points with four of them aces. Serrano also had one kill and four assists.
Heather Benson, Suwannee’s first-team setter, had 25 assists against Taylor and three service points.
Stephanee Skipper, new this year to varsity play, had nine kills against Taylor and an impressive 10 service points. Two of those serves turned out to be aces. Skipper also had three assists.
Nereyda Pecina worked hard for the Lady Dogs in her key position as libero. Pecina had nine assists.
Alex Camunas had four kills, two service points and four assists.
Merlonda Owens had one kill, four service points, one of them an ace.
